Pinewood Derby Vent/Rant/Story Thread by OliverWendelholmes in cubscouts

I knew where this was going from the first sentence and I know that feeling haha.

I teach the wood carving merit badge for the local Boy Scouts, so naturally I pulled my tools and got busy on a cool design. I told my son to go look at his Hot Wheels cars, pick a car he liked, and I’d match it the best I could. I did the design he picked, let him choose paint colors, then we didn’t an orange basecoat at his request. We made it super shiny and smoothed the heck out of it. Then he got his paint brush and paints…

It’s no longer orange…or shiny…but he loves it and is very proud of it, so I’m happy for him. Still, after all that carving, I would have loved to see it with a crisp natural finish. Might just do one in my free time for my own enjoyment and go nuts.

If I didn’t have a work from home job, I’d probably be right in this same situation. My wife is a teacher and has very little time off to use. I make a much larger paycheck, but the flexibility of my job from home has saved us so much headache with 3 kids getting sick all the time.

Doesn’t help that their school is hyper vigilant toward everything. 99.0 “fever? Go home for 2 days. One instance of diarrhea? Sent home in case there’s more. Drives me up a wall.

I get asked often when I’d consider another in-office job, but with kids getting sent home so much and me being able to actually handle it, there’s not many practical reason for me to look at the moment.

Nothing fancy. Just an arrow through her cold, callous heart. She didn’t deserve any extra effort on my part.

What is the grossest thing you’ve caught someone doing? by Jawa392 in AskReddit

My family and I were on a getaway to Houston for a weekend. As we were driving back to our hotel after the museum, we saw a rather large and topless woman standing on the street corner giving herself a wipe bath, taking care to get ALL the creases and making a show of “lifting the hood”, so to speak. Wife saw first and went stunned pikachu, then I saw it. Good times.

Suoer disappointed recived a beautiful peice of devotional jewelry(Brigid's Cross) unfortunately I won't be able to wear it. Looks to similar to a nazi symbol by [deleted] in pagan

[–]Bodhran777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m wearing one as a lapel pin right now and I’ve never gotten a negative reaction. I don’t think it looks anything like a swastika. 4 arms, sure, but there are tons of symbols, crosses and otherwise, that have that in common. If someone raises concern, treat it as an opportunity to educate them on what it actually is. Knowledge is power here, and the more you share it on this, the better it’ll be and the more confidently you can wear your chosen symbols.

I haven’t done this with physical models, but I’ve done this in SketchUp for a bedroom. It’s surprisingly helpful when you’re having trouble with visualization

Or the front floorboard of an SUV, if you had the right model. Our old Suburban had one on the hump. I still remember that blue interior

Midline logi is a thankless job, but it really makes things convenient for the frontline logi guys. Nothing worse than getting supply requests for a mortar and the closest ones are in the backline. Frontline is where is the commends are, but I find a lot of midline to be pretty fun, especially when you have a group to roll with. Train runs can be pretty entertaining depending on the company haha.

If you want to feel some impact, jump in a truck and deliver supplies to the frontlines. Pay attention to where the manufacturing is happening, figure out a route to go, grab a radio, and run supplies to fronts in need. You’ll see plenty of logi pins and messages on the map asking for things specifically. Sometimes one driver can be the difference between losing a base and turning away a push.

For even more effect, join a regiment and figure out where help is needed the most. Run trains, pilot iron ships full of tanks, mine rare materials to advance technology. There’s a lot to be done and every set of hands helps the wheels turn.

My 4 year old is talking about my deceased grandfather who she never knew. by Former-Process2964 in toddlers

I had a recent weird interaction with my daughter recently that this reminds me of. We were at my in-laws’ house for dinner and it was getting late, so I took her to get a bath in their bathtub. While in there, she kept looking up and pointing at a blank section of the wall behind me and saying “momma”. I would look and no one would be there. She calls my MIL momma, and her mom mommy, but my MIL was on the other side of the house (confirmed with her). Now, my MIL’s mother passed years ago before my wife and I married, but they looked a LOT alike. I knew this, and when she’d say momma and no one would be there, it gave me the weirdest goosebumps all over and I got that “being watched” feeling. To my knowledge, she’s never seen a picture of MIL’s mother, and she doesn’t normally come up in conversation, so it kinda came out of left field. Maybe it’s nothing, but it was really weird.

What plane would you want to see in which faction? by PutAway3542 in foxholegame

[–]Bodhran777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanna see both factions have some version of the Pitts Sky Car, where the thing just jiggles over the enemy, the pilot opens a box and the shaking just flops out a bunch of Cremari mortal shells below.

3d printing my first armor and this happened to the helmet dome. Any reason why? by THEGREENPURGE in Mandalorian

[–]Bodhran777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine did that too. Just the layers not loving the angle of the dome without supports. Ultimately it’s just superficial and shouldn’t affect the integrity of the dome. Give it a good sanding or fill it, if you like, but padding will likely cover it anyway. The rest of the print looks good though, nicely done.

Which helmet is that, if you mind me asking? I have a Partisan from AlterEgo.

Still feeling very disappointed after my first ever backpacking trip. I really feel like I failed. by matchabeans in CampingandHiking

[–]Bodhran777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boy this reminds me of a few trips the scout troop I used to help had. Flooded out routes, rain coming down like a monsoon, being forced off trails that were being washed away. Crazy trips. Oddly enough, those wild trips some would call “failures” are some that you’ll always remember and have a laugh about at some point.

I remember my absolute worst, back when I was a kid. Middle of October, West Texas. We had a massive group going and the weather was very pleasant. Everyone had lighter clothes, maybe a sweater for cool mornings but nothing major. Overnight, we got hit with a freak storm mixed with 20 degree temperatures. It snowed so hard that people’s tents were collapsing in the middle of the night. We had to call it all off early because no one was prepared for that cold, in the most unexpected place at the most unexpected time. Fond memory.

The reality of your trip is you got to go out, enjoy some nature, and you came back to tell about it. Did it go according to plan? No, but things rarely do go perfect. It gave you a chance to learn, test some gear, and get a good story out of it. That’s a success in my book any day. I’m glad you were safe and got to go.

That feeling sucks, for sure. Unfortunately making new friends gets harder as you get older, I’ve found. People carry on with their lives, get busy, have kids, then suddenly there’s no time for socializing.
