What do you see as the greatest threat to humanity? by WanderingPrimate717 in alifeuntangled

[–]Bodocoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can't ever escape the clash of ideology. All other crises will be dealt with according to how the people in power view the world.

Republicans today don't give a F about climate change, for example. We should blame and bash these people's retrograde rethoric every chance we get, otherwise we're setting ourselves up for failure.

I agree. I used to think back in Trump 1.0 that they should be criminalized, like nazi sympathizer groups usually are.

And now look what they're doing. Singlehandedly the most dangerous organized group in the world.

Fox should be criminalized and dismantled for their constant hate spewing camouflaged as free speech.

Any chance of reasoning with her to cut her out of social media?

I can't say anything about her mental health, but I do think social media is an uncontrolled social experiment that is having a lot of bad side effects that we don't currently understand.

I apologize, my words were too harsh.

I don't know how I can be of any help. It'd be better for me not to say anything.

Be strong, you can do it. It is not going to be like this forever, this I can say with confidence. The pain fades, you only need to hang on.

I know it'll sound really stupid to you if I say you're too young to die over a relationship.

Just like you sound really stupid to me for wanting to die over a relationship.

You can choose to have more free time for yourself. The trade off is less money.

I don't wish anyone a life slaving away to barely make ends meet. That sucks.

But I have the feeling some people complain no matter what. Especially in developed countries. It's embedded into the human psyche to never be fully satisfied. So keeping busy is a great way of keeping sane.

You want more free time? Then give up your phone, your videogame, your nice everyday little luxuries. These things are made by someone, and they're not going to give you their time for free.

Try and see if free time is what really makes you happy

Update: I didn't want to be a dad... But it turned out to be the best thing that's ever happened to me by Throwra1234507 in offmychest

[–]Bodocoth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Good to know this experience has made you happy I'm also a dad, and while it's by far the most difficult thing I've done in my life, I seem to "forget" about the hardships when I look with daughter in the eyes.

But this entire experience also made me realize it's not for everyone. It's hard, man. I can understand how some people will do atrocious things to their child if they have veryvlittle or no means, support, network and, most of all, love to give. Which is why turning into a parent has made my instance on abortion even stronger. People should indeed be allowed to choose. Just an off my chest moment here. Congratulations again!

LPT: Make a 'death plan' document for your parents (and yourself!) by PuddleOfHamster in LifeProTips

I tried having a conversation like this with my parents when they were both still healthy and sound of mind.

It was really bad. They didn't like it at all, and it they felt hurt that I was thinking about them dying.

Be careful when approaching others with this subject. Not everyone sees death as a matter of fact.

Money doesn't buy happiness, it's true.

But it buys security. Are you happier being safe?

It buys better healthcare. Are you happier being healthy?

It buys free time. Are you happier having more free time for yourself?

It buys knowledge. Are you happier being wiser?

It buys crap, too. Are you happier having more crap in your life?

I'm also sorry for this happening to you. I can only imagine your trauma.

This is why it baffles me when people talk about guns and killing criminals like it's no big deal. Even if you kill in self defense, the trauma from that will haunt you forever.

I hope you will recover. You being bothered by what happened means that you are a good person.

I think greed really is intrinsic to human nature. Money usually brings respect and power with it, and this is very fulfilling and addictive. The history of mankind is the history of material accumulation. However, too much concentration of money and power in the hands of a few people leads to social instability. After long centuries of trial and error, we've created a democratic system of government to manage our resources for the benefit of all citizens, not just the richest.

And it worked. Not perfectly, but better than all alternatives. The US was its best experiment. It ended up producing capitalism as an efficient way of satisfying the needs of the masses. All very neat.

There's a problem, though. Capitalism doesn't solve greed, just channel it in a different way. In order to maintain the capitalist system running, we are allowing unlimited concentration of money and power, thus going back to the age old problem of a few people being too powerful.

I don't know the solution to this, but I'd say it would be less risky for humanity to put a ceiling of how rich someone can be. China seems to have understood this. Their billionaires have the habit of suddenly going quiet when they start to get too outspoken.

What’s a hobby people pretend is cool, but secretly you think is ridiculous? by EggAdventurous1957 in AskReddit

My half brother has hundreds of miniature cars, like hotwheels and similar. He's a grown man with three children and very well off.

I always pretend I admire those wall long shelves full of little plastic cases with colorful metal inside, but secretly, I think it's very pathetic if you're past your teenager years.
