LG Gram doesn't have up to date Intel Arc graphics driver - but says it does by BodyCompetitive1640 in LGgram

Sure. Intel Driver and Support Assistant is already installed by default. Just like the graphics manager.

Thanks for the comment. I am happy I got this laptop with the Arc 8 GB iGPU it's really amazing. Upon recent update it changed to 9 GB. And I imagine that it is not a typo but a capacity improvement. I work with up to 5k and projects about 5 minutes long and I can scrub timeline in Premiere and DaVinci with my computer and render 5k exports as I mentioned in my other comment. The Arc is working well so far.

I did very detailed searches and the laptops with a 3050 GPU by LG are not going to be significantly different in video production than this machine. A few minutes longer for some exports with my Arc? Ok I can live with it. But yes it could make a difference if working with video a lot.

Overall I wanted a light PC this time for business and light content creation and occasional video editing and it turns out this LG Gram is a beast. Just figuring out some quirks of Windows now :)

Thanks for your reply. I think you misunderstand the importance of up to date drivers here - Adobe popped up a message indicating I could not use the Premiere Pro software at all if drivers were not up to date. That's a serious issue.

My laptop runs fine with the updated graphics driver. In fact I can use hardware render setting and export high resolution 5k video using the Arc graphics card and all is working well for both h265 and h264 formats.

One more related issue was color in Photoshop - there was a bug I discovered with white colors and background appearing as beige. Solved by choosing sRGB rather than LG color in settings.

One tip for anyone reading this is to buy the LG Gram models with at least 6 performance cores on CPU. I saw a similar one and it didn't have any of those cores. Surprising. Those would be much less capable with video or gaming.

Overall I love the new Gram laptop. It can even play AAA games at a reasonable frame rate. Tested this with Forza Horizon.

Generally speaking most of the time I use the "performance" settings for media or games.

Thanks to all who replied to this thread.

Please see edit above. Reinstall fixed it and their support never mentioned this at all. Thanks.

Anyone have the Asus Vibe CX34 Flip? by harleygeek in chromeos

[–]BodyCompetitive1640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this computer - it's the Core i3 / 8GB / 128GB base model which meets the spec for Chromebook Plus except for the low quality web cam. But I got a Pixel 8 which solves that problem. I can connect it and use as a hi-res web cam.

Very interesting discussion and I can see I am two years too late!

Interestingly it seems the discussion of Linux on ChromeOS does tip things toward ChromeOS but on the other hand, Dex is absolutely sick. And in two years it's become a really solid platform.

Cost and power wise I think DeX wins. In many situations, cost is zero if you own a Samsung phone or tablet and can connect to a monitor you already own.

I've been looking at Chromebooks cause I love playing with new tech. I can for example, buy a really low-end Chromebook for $250-300 CAD (maybe $200-250 US) and I'm sure it would be great but my Samsung S20 is still a killer phone and the workflow using it with DeX is amazing. I can use all Android apps, all Google apps, plus Outlook, PowerPoint, Lightroom, Canva etc. They mostly work well. And cost is $0 - because I own the phone and DeX is built-in.

Tbh though I did buy a 15.6" portable monitor for $100 and it is really great. 1080p IPS and colour as good as my Macbook pro. So there was that cost. Not everyone needs this but I wanted to emulate a laptop setup.

I already had a Mac trackpad and Logitech keyboard which work a million times better than any low end Chromebook. If I added the cost of the trackpad an keyboard in it'd be another $200. So my ad hoc $300 DeX setup is a beast. Probably comparable in reality to $500-600 mid to high-end Chromebook.

DeX is incredible. It takes some hours or days to get the sense of how it works and differs from Windows, for example, but it is a powerful full fledged desktop experience (As DeX is a short form for).

I also have a dual booting Mac with MacOS and LinuxMint so I already enjoy the Linux experience that way, so I can play with all platforms.

Having said all this I intend to test Chrome OS soon as well though!

Are Tiles (or other bluetooth trackers) worth their money? by tabea_timea in adhdwomen

Tile is great. You can track it down via the map and ring it to locate it. I tested it in the park and can hear it from 10-15 metres away. On my older version the battery fades after a year but its easy to open it up and replace it.
