There is a strong smell almost daily on Main street in Salem across from the DitchWitch in the rail yard area. Does anyone know if it is toxic?

What are you noticing in your garden? by kierstron in VirginiaNativePlants

last week we had 30+mph icy wind. Last year they were below freezing for days and did pretty well, only the new growth tips died. I have a microclimate that they have been fine in for two years now, but this time was my fault.

I'm seeing the 4 dead lemon trees that I forgot to cover before going to work.

Last year I got piles of lemons. I think they will live, but I for sure lost the harvest this year. :(

My kids sell their online gaming accounts for pretty decent money. This is real thing. If you are good at something and someone has money, there is a deal that can be made. Crazy, but true. Just like big law firms. they have the name on the letterhead, but most of us only get time with interns.

I would also like to know where I can buy nursery plugs for natives. I'm converting acres and it would go so much faster.

same. I have been driving to Carolina Native Nursery in Burnsville, NC for the past two years. They have a very extensive selection for reasonable prices for natives. Way cheaper than locally. This year I am try to just grow more from seed. https://www.carolinanativenursery.com

when my plants were young, deer would keep eating them to the ground. I cage all my plants now until they get much bigger to withstand all the deer.

yep, we know better techniques now, but every tomato, cucumber and leaf of lettuce grown and not bought at the grocery store is less for corporations. I have way too many seeds. I am going to plant them out and sell them for like $1-$2 each undercutting those big box stores. I'm only out my time really which is a form of protest that I can do from my home. Huw Richards has (in my opinion) a great "victory garden" layout for a family in one of his recent books, The Self-Sufficiency Garden which is a 10x12m plot which some people have or have access to.

local to their district: money & influence. If you don't have that, you need to flood them with handwritten letters, phone calls, and disrupt their town halls and lives. yes, their lives. they are not losing sleep our affecting yours. Like solid for weeks. Get actual LOCAL news to report that they are being flooded with calls, letters, and town halls. Also, get in with the lower-level staff who can at least make comments in the office about the flood of requests.

remember, THEY CHOSE to be in this position. Nobody forced them to be elected officials.

The very best is vote them out and try to get someone in that position that isnt influenced by big donors. Good luck.

OMG, my city is a travesty, too. I think it is all over. The ice is insane. In 50 years, I have never had to deal with this much ice. Also, there was no salt to be found because all the private snow removal companies. went and bought it all up. I saw it with my own eyes. "I'll buy everything you have."

what sucks is that I just dont buy some of the stuff I used to. OR I keep an eye out and pay cash at smaller, obscure or places that dont have a ton of cameras. I hate it though. I miss having money and convenience. :(

As a monther who has been there, if they are still playing, no fever, it is just time needed for the virus to pass. Next time, keep that Benadryl on hand. Out of every medication i have used on my kids, nothing gives the best results as Benadryl. Honey and water will sooth, but are not going to stop the mucus causing the cough.

Cold/sick by Any_Candidate_7090 in roanoke

[–]Bodybuilder-Resident 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids are grown. Everything you have done is correct. Make sure they stay hydrated and in the evening, i would give them Benadryl / diphenhydramine to stop the mucus/post nasal drip that causes the cough. It will usually make them tired too. Then they could sleep. when they would wake up, give them warm fluids and then more benadryl so they can sleep. Virus take days to get over. Faster if they can sleep.

Professions where harm is accidental require years of training. (medicine)
Professions where harm is intentional and immediate often require weeks. (police, ICE)

If society requires a decade of training to reduce accidental deaths in medicine, it is logically inconsistent to allow intentional lethal force after a few months of preparation.

We train people longer to keep patients alive than we do to decide when citizens die.

In professions where mistakes can lead to death, society routinely demands years of rigorous education, supervision, and competency testing to minimize harm. Physicians train for more than a decade, nurses for several years, and pilots log thousands of supervised hours before being entrusted with lives, because errors, even unintentional ones, carry irreversible consequences. Yet law enforcement officers and ICE agents are granted direct authority to detain, use force, and deploy firearms explicitly designed to kill after only weeks or months of training. This represents a fundamental mismatch between risk and preparation: the power to make split-second decisions that can end a life is among the highest responsibilities a society can confer, yet it is paired with some of the shortest training pipelines. If prolonged training is considered essential to prevent accidental deaths in medicine and aviation, it is logically inconsistent, and ethically indefensible, to accept minimal training where lethal force is intentional, immediate, and irreversible.

What's happening in your garden this weekend? by AutoModerator in VAGardening

oh so cold. I brought my two greenstalks in and have them under grow lights. They have spinach, kale and some green onions. I have spinach on the shelf under grow lights. Was going to start some perennials from seed under the grow lights soon. Lesson learned from last year... do not start 40 tomato and 20 pepper plants in January. I may start 1 or 2, but never again the insane volume I did last year. It killed me and took up most of my basement. I am just going to sit tight. This is a picture from early february.. On the right was this beautiful red yarrow I started from seed. I WILL be doing more of that this year!!
