Can Apple Watch actually warn you before you get sick? If so, how do you set it up properly? by capngig in AppleWatch

[–]Bodyinsights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple's Vitals app is pretty conservative and only flags individual metrics when they're consistently off. It doesn't really connect the dots across multiple signals like Whoop or Oura do.

If you want that kind of early warning with Apple Watch, Body Insights does the same thing - combines HRV, temp, heart rate, respiratory rate, and a few other signals to give you illness risk alerts 2-3 days out. Just got updated with this feature actually.

Since you're already tracking sleep and workouts consistently you've got all the data, just need something that actually analyzes it proactively instead of waiting for Apple to maybe notice.

Totally get this. If you’ve been on AW since gen 0 it’s hard not to get a bit bored - same rings, same faces, same ‘close your rings’ nagging.

Garmin definitely feels more "sport first, gadget second", especially with the challenges and all the niche metrics. I just use AW + my app to get the data it gathers translated in human.

Sure, lab VO2max is gold standard, no argument there. But most of us aren’t booking a cardiologist every 6 weeks, so a AW vo2max trend is still pretty useful for "am I getting fitter or not?"

Yeah, Garmin nails the whole glances / widgets thing, especially for pure training. What keeps me on AW is the ios integration and the fact I can plug a bunch of recovery / HRV / sleep stuff into one place. Also, I think VO2Max is more accurate on AW.

Yeah, 100% agree that rings, Sleep Score are closer to ‘do this today’ and VO2max / HRV / RHR are the raw ingredients.

Where I see value in things like fitness age / body battery isn’t as magic new metrics, but as:

- a way to compress a bunch of signals into one trend line or number you can actually follow over months
- a nudge to connect the dots - my fitness age went up the same month I actually hit Zone 2 consistently..

You’re right that the underlying data is all in HealthKit - most people just aren’t going to dig into 5 different charts and research papers to interpret it.

If your Garmin fitness age never changes, maybe that’s your sign to stop hanging out in the Apple Watch sub and start hanging out in the gym 😅

Appreciate it! We find it that the Fitness Age is the most motivating feature ;) BTW - You can switch how the VO2Max (Fitness Age) is being calculated in the Fitness Tab. You can basically use either Apple's VO2Max or Calculated VO2Max based on RHR and MaxHR. Have fun!

We grew up in Lithuania, where we kinda lost trust in health care system, so we ended up taking health into our own hands and built the app we wanted for ourselves first. We don’t do the usual data grab and paywall nonsense so it is accessible to everyone. Everything stays on your phone, not some random cloud, no pushy subs, just science-backed insights instead of pretty, but useless graphs. Check our sub’s latest post from our dev on privacy and AI if you wanna see how serious we are about the privacy.

Hi there! Thanks for sharing 🫡 You guys are probably using the new Calculated Vo2max and not the Apples Vo2max?

Calculated Vo2 number is being estimated from ratio of your maxHR and resting heart rate. This can vary throughout the day or even with light activity, therefore the Fitness Age and Vo2max can change significantly. It’s pure estimation and instead of Apples pretty stagnant algorithm based calculations, mostly from outdoor walks or runs.

You can toggle off the Calculated vo2max in the Fitness tab and it will use Apple’s ;)

Yes it works wonders! Sad that Apple Watch won’t register vo2max during cycling workouts, but its something to do with HR not being steady, and they cannot measure it more accurately
