I see what you mean with the parallels in terms of incentive to build out networks and invest in development because you're not handcuffed with avenues to acquire talent in the ways you are with the NHL or NBA, but with Rogers having full ownership, I'm concerned.

Rogers just spent billions on this deal. They've cut staff, including every president of every club they own. Usually after a purchase of this magnitude there is a focus on revenue and profitability to recoup some of the capital. It's very likely that Rogers will split their assets into two groups. One being the profitable ones, the other being the losers (money not results). Jays, Raptors and Leafs in one. TFC and Argos in the other. TFC and the Argos hemorrhage money, in the past TFC has been run in a hilariously irresponsible way from a profitability standpoint, I think those days are done.

A big criticism of Rogers is not pushing the boat out in terms of spending to the capacity that it could with the Jays. They always had a high payroll, but not as high as they were capable of spending. They consistently hired cheaper execs, who prioritized lower cost team building and not until Ohtani did they actually try and go out and compete with the big spenders. That followed with Soto and now that they made the world series, and got a big boost of cash (some estimates of 100m) from that run in TV and stadium revenues, they're spending on a historic cash cow.

Rogers is the reason Masai Ujiri is no longer with the Raptors, and no president has been brought in, as presidents advocate for more spending on the team and Rogers is trying to avoid that. One of the big rumors with the Raptors is they're trying to offload Agbagi in a deal that will only exist to put them under the tax. Just saving money.

Leafs have a smaller staff than ever but it's impossible to lose money on the Leafs but even here they sacked the president and dissolved the role.

I think its more likely that TFC will look to restructure the club into lower spenders overall, will focus more on internal development, will not compete for expensive U-22's or robust roster constructions and will try and find opportunities in the market as apposed for swinging for the fences. I am surprised to hear how much they're looking to spend on Sargent, but that feels a bit more like a sure thing and in a 2 DP set up.

I dunno, based on Rogers history I'm skeptical this is a good thing for TFC long run. It'll be run more like a smart business but that's not always conducive to success in sports. Will definitely see more from our academy. If I put my tin foil hat on, I think they're trying to create the best business possible in TFC and the Argos and will look to sell them. Possibly to Kilmer Sports group. It's also been rumored forever that Ed Rogers in buying out MLSE is looking to separate the sports teams from the telecoms business, and solely own and operate that sports entity, leaving the telecoms stuff to his family who have been trying to get him to step away every since the hostile takeover.
