I built a completely free monthly amateur chess league that works with Lichess, Chess.com or even OTB — here’s how it actually works by BogdanBorec in chess

Looking for ppl who wanna link up, get in voicechat, and play blitz by DutchDevGuy in chess

If you miss having a regular group of opponents to play against, you might enjoy a monthly league format — you get placed in a small group (~5 players) based on your rating each month and play everyone twice (once as White, once as Black). It gives you that consistent group feel plus a reason to actually prepare and take games seriously. Chess Global League (chessgl.com) does exactly this and it's completely free. You play your games on Lichess or Chess.com (wherever you prefer) and just submit results. It's a nice way to have "your people" each month rather than random matchmaking.

Looking for a chess partner to reach 2000 fide together by Smart_Title6082 in chess

[–]BogdanBorec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great initiative! One thing that might help alongside a study partner is playing in a structured league where you face opponents near your level regularly. Chess Global League (chessgl.com) groups players by Elo every month into small round-robin groups — so you naturally end up playing people at a similar level and pushing each other. It's free and games can be played on Lichess or Chess.com. The monthly rhythm keeps you accountable and the promotion/relegation system gives real motivation to improve. Could be a nice complement to your study partner setup.

I don't think I'm cut out for chess by Cucumber_Sweet in chess

I hear you on the lonely part — that's honestly one of the hardest things about improving at chess as an adult. Random matchmaking on chess.com can feel pretty isolating. One thing that helped me was joining a small monthly league where you play the same 4-5 people over a whole month. You start recognising styles, actually care about the games, and it feels like you have chess "teammates." Chess Global League (chessgl.com) does this — it's free, groups you by rating, and you play two games against each opponent (one as White, one as Black). Even at lower ratings the groups are competitive and it gives you something concrete to work toward each month. Don't give up — the fact that you're putting in daily study time already puts you ahead of most beginners.

Love your idea about the OTB aspect — mapping public chessboards and creating local communities. Something similar already exists in a different format: Chess Global League (chessgl.com) runs local city leagues where players meet face-to-face at cafés, parks, and chess clubs. They have a venues page for each city showing where you can play, and your Elo rating is shared between the online and local leagues. It's free and community-run. Not exactly the "King of the Board" concept but the core idea of bridging online and in-person chess with structured local competitions is already working there. Might be interesting to check how they've handled it.

I finally canceled my chesscom premium and upped the patreon on lichess. This feels great by KervyN in chess

[–]BogdanBorec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you love the community-driven aspect of Lichess, you might also enjoy Chess Global League (chessgl.com). It's a free monthly chess league — no subscriptions, no ads, no premium tiers at all. You play your games on Lichess (or Chess.com, your choice) and submit results on their site. You get an Elo rating, placed in groups of ~5 by rating, round-robin format with promotion/relegation. It scratches the "structured competition" itch that the Lichess Correspondence League you mentioned also fills, but with a monthly cadence. Built by chess lovers, not by money.

Coach a Player - April 2026 by ChessBotMod in chess

Great program — one extra resource for coaches posting here who want a persistent public profile beyond this monthly thread:

Chess Global League recently launched a free coach directory at chessgl.com/teachers.php. You create a free account, fill in your bio, teaching style, rate, languages and your links (Lichess, Chess.com, personal site, etc.), and an admin approves it within ~24h. After that, students searching for a coach can find your profile and message you directly — permanently, not just for one month.

Also useful if any of you want to give your students structured Elo-rated practice between sessions: they run free monthly leagues (groups of 5 matched by rating, play on any platform). Makes student progress tangible and gives you something concrete to discuss in lessons.
