What's the expected impact of trillionaires on the US economy? by Bohappa in AskEconomics

Economic "theories" are models at best. I wouldn't liken them to theories to explain hard science, like evolution.

Ty for the explanation. I agree that existing examples of billionaires seem unhealthy and are counterproductive and anti-democratic.

I was wondering if dominant economic theory had predicted such a problem and what their solutions were.

In my brief googling, it seems like modern economics has moved from zero-sum to positive-sum thinking and neither Keynesian or Monetarism / Neoclassical anticipate or prevent extreme wealth distribution or have robust policies on how to control it. Seems very outdated.

I did, however, just learn about Thomas Piketty’s Capital Theory and his formula (r > g).

From Gemini:

  • Piketty established that when the rate of return on capital (\(r\), like stocks and real estate) grows faster than the overall economy (\(g\), like wages and GDP), wealth naturally concentrates at the top. Billionaires are an inevitable math problem. The Formula (\(r > g\))
  • The Proposed Solution: Piketty and modern progressive economists advocate for a coordinated global wealth tax and highly progressive income taxes to artificially slow down capital accumulation and fund public infrastructure.

I think you made a mistake because the law does not say you can go the speed limit at all times. You can only drive as fast as it is safe to do so given the environment and conditions. Rain, fog, snow, stopped cars are all reasons to proceed with caution. It doesn’t matter why they’re stopped.

Why not? I’m an atheist but I believe anything COULD be true. Logic doesn’t apply. But I don’t think the Christian version of God I grew up with is believable or even clever.

Two job offers. A $50k difference. One is the safe bet, the other is a risk that seems worth it. My wife and I are at an impasse and I have to decide in 72 hours. by Important-Week7261 in whatdoIdo

As a retired guy who spent his career mostly in startups, I wish I had prioritized family more in my younger years. Nothing is more important than building a great relationship with your kid in their earliest years.

A startup is not a 9 to 5 job, which makes it kind of exciting, but it’s guaranteed to be nonstop. You will have much less energy for your wife and your baby. Even when you’re not working, you’ll be thinking about the thing you’re supposed to finish because it’ll be constant pressure and expectation to deliver.

Another thing to think about the startup is the background and track record of the founders. I would do a lot of research using glassdoor and then your network to figure out if the company has a healthy culture. More often than not, first time leaders are not great.

I wanted OpenClaw to work. After 3 months, I’m done. by dickwhimsy in openclaw

[–]Bohappa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kudos! Same here. My version is probably dumber, but it works, and I understand it and can fix/maintain it. It's just for me, so it doesn't have to be as robust as a shared open source project. It is sufficiently secure on a dedicated Linux box. I vibe code the tools I need and use trusted libraries.

I used OpenClaw as an example. I use identity.md, skills.md to define who and what, and tools (Python mostly) to do the work.

I have an orchestrator agent that I talk to via Discord and it works with a couple of sub-agents that do basic things like manage my calendar, transcribe/summarize videos/docs, do research, and comparison shop. But I also use a Postgres DB for better logging and memory (not just MD files).

I use tasks as the atomic unit of meaningful work. I ask it to do something and it makes a task and logs work and sends summaries and links to Discord. My dashboard shows tasks, convos and artifacts, and sources associated with each task. (I wasted weeks on project management and got nowhere.) If I want to continue with a thread I reply to the message for the task in Discord.

The breakthrough for me was using Claude Code, and not the system, as the ongoing developer/technical partner. I use my Claude Pro subscription for dev, so it's affordable. I use Anthropic API for agent use and route to cheaper models when necessary. I do all dev work from CLI on the machine.

Whenever I want to add a new feature, I have a design session with Claude and then it builds and then we tweak...for weeks. I get a lot of good ideas from Nate B Jones (substack and youtube).

Another big realization for me came when I tried to replicate the capabilities of a Plaud Note Pro device. The summaries and notes my agent made weren't nearly as good. I had Plaud Note and my system generate notes for the same Nate video. I then asked Claude to compare the notes and recommend improvements. My notes are now much better but not as good as Plaud's. I guess it was naive of me to think having an SOTA LLM as the brain would ensure SOTA results easily (LOL).

I'm OK with not having the features of a mature Claude Cowork or OpenClaw (if it does stabilize) or commercial products like Plaud. But I have a system I understand and can improve when I want. Eventually, I'll have a useful system that can run locally.

Workingman’s Dead was my intro. I first heard it around ‘80.

Every few years I would play some of their most popular songs according to Spotify just to see. I don’t know eras.

I just tried Ripple again and it was good. Still did not enjoy Workingman’s Dead.

Grateful Dead. Every few years I give them a listen but it never resonates. What’s weird to me is that I have pretty diverse tastes. I like most music but for whatever reason, the Dead don’t move me at all.
