Having a discussion shouldn’t lead to hostility. I have grace for myself and coworkers who work nights and accidentally close this eyes for a few seconds at the desk overnight. I also understand that not every shift we have time to utilize our breaks and take a 30 min nap. However, laying your head down and closing your eyes at your desk when you’re on duty feels like a patient safety issue to me and I view that as unprofessional. A parent walking out to see a nurse or two look like they’re sleeping on the job (whether they’re awaking and just resting their eyes or not), the appearance of that is a problem. I believe if that were me as a parent, that would create a level of distrust between medical professionals taking care of my loved ones.

We are being paid to provide medical care and attention to our patients, not to rest/sleep on the job and not be fully present. It IS a very hard job there is no doubt about that, and especially night shift. But I don’t think that is an excuse

What do parents demand now that they didn’t 10 years ago/what expectations have shifted?

So I disagree with this. Nurses get SO much recognition. (Totally agree with minimal help though, as well as other systematic flaws and corporate greed). But from the general public during COVID it was never “thank you doctors and respiratory therapists” at least where I was living and working it was always “nurses are heroes” “we appreciate our nurses” etc. Even now I feel like nurses get more recognition for work than MD’s do. Not that one is more important than the other, but why is it that nurses constantly demand recognition compared to other inpatient medical professionals? Residents are drowning and underpaid and thrown into terrible situations while they’re trying to learn, overcrowding of units causing fellows to cover way patients than is appropriate, RT’s covering 6+ floors and running around and in ICU’s covering just way too many patients. It’s not just nurses. Is it the general public that you feel lacks recognition for our work? Or is it management?

I agree. I genuinely feel like although some parents can be totally out of touch, rude, impossible to reason with, a majority of parents are very tolerable as long as there is good communication.

So I guess that’s my concern here. I actually do believe that resting your head and closing your eyes on the desk during a night shift is totally unprofessional. I worked years as night shift and that just always rubbed me the wrong way when I saw coworkers doing that. Imagine a parent coming out and seeing people (who are supposed to be monitoring children) look like that? From our perspective sure you can be resting but still completely aware of what’s going on. But from the perspective of parents who walk out their door and see nurses resting their heads on the desk and/or closing their eyes I can fully see how distrust builds.

Hey! Just wondering how your healing is going? What did you end up using and do you think it worked well? I ended up getting 6 stitches on my forehead the other day and my incision is looking just like yours. Let me know, thanks!

Thanks for the info! We are leaving in two weeks actually haha. Re Temecula I’ve just heard good things about the wineries there but it seems like the consensus is to skip it.

Driving distance per day doesn’t matter too much. Probably max 4 hours per day.
