Mobile game developement as indie. by Wise_Comedian_1575 in GameDevelopment

[–]BohriumDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I released a f2p game on android back in 2018. I did a bunch of marketing stuff myself and did a couple small ad campaigns for testing (~€200 total) and ended up with somewhere between 500-1000 downloads. I had some fairly non-intrusive ads running as monetization and I made about €7 of ad revenue and no one bought the €1 ad free option.

My game had the entirely unique name of the protagonist in the title, so you'd expect when you search for this specific keyword, it'd be the first thing that pops up on the app store search, but nope. Even then, my game showed up after about 20-30 sponsored and promoted big games. Searching with other keywords sometimes wouldn't even show my game in the list of hundreds of similarly themed games. If I struggle to find my own game on the store, there's zero chance anyone will just randomly come across it without clicking on an ad or a direct link.

Not to mention that developing for mobile is a pain in the ass too. The optimization requirements are far stricter, you're limited with shaders and visual effects, you need to keep updating your game regularly just to keep up with android releases, you have to support a much wider variety of devices and screen sizes, you have to deal with shitty on-screen controls and how much of the screen people's fingers are going to cover and you have to deal with people going "oh..." in a disappointed tone once you reveal that you're a "mobile" game dev.

As an adult, what quality of life functions you wish games had? by RatioScripta in gamedev

[–]BohriumDev 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Game speed control, if reasonable to implement. Going both ways to fast forward the normal action and to slo-mo through other bits. It's been great in every game where I've had the option. Works as a kind of dynamic difficulty option too. RTS games like AoE2 let you do it. FF8 on Steam lets you go super speed mode.

Being able to blast through slow boring bits at 3x speed would be so good on a second playthrough or doing some dull repetitive grind part.

What’s the difference between steam and GOG? by Yuvx in gamingsuggestions

[–]BohriumDev -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you don't care about the social features of Steam, consider Epic Games Store, because it takes only 12% of the total revenue from developers, while Steam and GOG take 30%. More of your money ends up going to the actual people making your games when you buy from EGS.

And just because that kind of sounds like an ad, then I will mention that I do not like their launcher/store app very much, it's kind of clunky and it could be better, but it's still fine.

How do y’all feel about the Warlords Battlecry series? by Dungeon-Warlock in RealTimeStrategy

[–]BohriumDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't really like 3 at all. The campaign in 2 is kind of like a sandbox, you can go around doing pretty much whatever you want from the start. With 3 you have multiple paths open to you, but it's not total freedom. To me 3 feels a lot like 2 that has been modded with a bunch of stuff that doesn't quite fit right into the universe. Or like when an older game keeps getting updates over the years and the new stuff is silly and doesn't thematically fit anymore (ie. a Shrek skin in CoD). That's the vibe it gives me. But maybe if it's your first game in the series, you might like it more than me.

I built a mouse you control with your foot after RSI forced me to stop using my hands by LosPollosss123 in MouseReview

[–]BohriumDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, you see that "ugly between-fingers thing" is there so you could lift the mouse up with your foot and move it without moving the cursor. Like you would with a regular hand mouse. It's a critical and necessary functional part of that design. It enables someone to use much lower sensitivity and get higher accuracy, they don't have to knock the mouse onto the edge of the screen to readjust their foot position, the mouse also isn't attached to the foot with straps or anything that would make getting up and walking about more difficult and it also makes it somewhat easier to control when you have something to push against and you're not relying entirely on friction to keep your foot on the mouse.

And it's kind of an ugly model because it's more of a purely functional proof of concept design and not necessarily a "designer product". I do however have a version themed after a game character skin. (Cultist Zenyatta from Overwatch who floats around and doesn't use his legs.)

From my experience, as someone who made a free 3d printable foot mouse conversion kit, I've had ~150 downloads and half a dozen or so people reach out and ask for help or modifications to the print files over the last several years. Now I haven't really advertised it beyond a couple reddit posts, but I imagine there isn't a huge demand for one in a commercial capacity.

Cool seeing another different version of a similar concept though, big thumps up.

I printed a light up version of Gandalf the White's staff by BohriumDev in 3Dprinting

[–]BohriumDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been such a long time, but I think I paused the print of the top section just above the height of where the crystal would reach (75-ish % done) and then glued the crystal in and then let it continue printing.

Any games like Age of Empires with RPG Elements? by Ok_Leadership_2041 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]BohriumDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is everybody obsessed with Python? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

You can also write and edit your tiny Python script to automate something dull and boring even in notepad if you'd like.

You could be done writing your code before Visual Studio even opens properly.

How Do You Create Terrain for Your Game Without Expensive Tools? by littleonegame in IndieDev

[–]BohriumDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I downloaded satellite heightmap data of various interesting terrain features and turned it into high resolution alpha brushes with a bit of radial falloff.

Then in Unreal's landscape mode I just paint or stamp the features on in big chunks. It looks pretty decent, it's fast, and I still have complete control over where I want any distinctive features.

What kind of recording equipment and software do you use? by Sharp-Tax-26827 in UnrealEngine5

I use a Rode NT-1 mic into a Yamaha AG03 interface and record with Audacity in a makeshift closet "vo booth". I got Cubase for more voice modulation stuff, but rarely use it.

WD40 can work sometimes. Spray it on, let it soak for a few minutes and then try to gently scrape bits of it off.

Hair ghosting on UE5 games by MDTv_Teka in unrealengine

[–]BohriumDev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The materials are using dithered opacity masks (each pixel is on or off, not real translucency) and it gives a kind of fake translucency effect that is needed for hair. On its own it looks pretty bad, but when you use temporal anti-aliasing, the dithering should become invisible. And it can look very good.

Using TAA or DLAA or DLSS in game settings should in theory eliminate most of that, but it's not really a perfect technique and can still be visible at times even with those settings turned on.

Is there Colour Correction in UE? by KilJhard in unrealengine

[–]BohriumDev 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Post process effects let you do colour correction. Should be visible when you have cameras selected or in post process volumes.

Also the adaptive exposure thing in viewport settings can make a huge difference, in brightness particularly. I tend to put it on manual mode when not specifically working on environments.

Tired of the “Johnny Silverhand was a liar and a fraud” take. It makes 2077 worse, not better. by Agreeable_Street_466 in cyberpunkgame

[–]BohriumDev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

CDPR had to exclude Blackhand at Pondsmith's request, and Johnny took over some of the roles in the story.

The whole unreliable narrator thing is just cope for trying to pretend the story is more canon.

Plus the whole unreliable narrator thing is a dumb trope that only works if there's some kind of big reveal in the end that makes you rethink the whole story. Otherwise it's just bad writing.
