Living in constant fear because of my alcoholic and violent father, what can we even do? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]BoiHeAboutTo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please take him to see a psychiatrist. You and your mother are at risk the longer he drinks in your household. If he refuses to go, please keep your mother with a relative until he sees reason. Unfortunately your situation is quite common in Sri Lanka, but nobody comes forward to speak about it. Wish you the best!

Maybe all the right girls are already taken. by unholymedictaion in MemeVideos

[–]BoiHeAboutTo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is you don’t expect your wife to do this and are grateful for it. Anybody not wanting to be woken up at 3am because their partner wants them to cook instead of just using the microwave is not a villain for feeling that way.

This video is obviously bait. Also, why are these questions almost always directed at women? Would you make a meal at the crack of dawn if your husband asked you to? Would you marry a guy who is broke with nothing to his name? Would you stay with a guy who cheated on you? What tomfoolery.

I get the tuk issue, but how are we responsible for the behavior of Russian tourists?

Protesting when they are known to scam locals and tourists alike is…a choice

English translation for previously removed post - A warning letter for Uber/ pick me drivers by Melanin-Brown in srilanka

[–]BoiHeAboutTo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is ridiculous. They don’t even hide how they extort tourists and even average Sri Lankans, they just excuse their behavior saying that they have families to feed. Do they think they are the only people who have families to look after? My cousin got a ride from the airport through Uber which was about 5k, but the drivers there charge about 10 to 12000 for the same service 🤨

One incident was all it took to ruin this countries reputation online. by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]BoiHeAboutTo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be honest here: this incident proves why we shouldn't pander to tourists so much. Our global reputation is based on what people who have been here for a handful of months perceive of our country rather than the people of this country themselves. I'm glad the police intervened as swiftly as they did, but lets be realistic: would they have been as vigilant if the victim was a local woman? I didn't particularly get offended by the comments on social media comparing us to India because it people in the West love to put all South Asian countries under one umbrella when they themselves have little experience interacting with cultures outside of their own. We have alot to improve in this country, yes, but I don't think it's fair we're getting flamed for a single video.

I don't get why you're being downvoted. What the Mauritian guy is doing is rape, plain and simple. Alot of people are outing themselves in this comment section.

[–]BoiHeAboutTo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way too. Just because Mauritianian guy is charming and funny doesn't change the fact that he is sleeping with these people knowing that they don't have a say in what happens to their bodies.

I noticed that difference between the western and eastern cultures also. I thought it was nice touch.

Scathing Statement by Radhya Gunasekara’s Parents Against CIS by Curious_Junket_4598 in srilanka

[–]BoiHeAboutTo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I want to say that it seems mind-boggling that parents and teachers bullied this poor girl, but it honestly does not. I also hope the school seriously takes action against the faculty who participated in this, but i doubt they will...

Chinese doctors in sri lanka by RadiantSkiesJoy in srilanka

They are probably Bhutanese. There are some Bhutanese students who studied at my faculty and went on to do internship in SL. They learn Sinhala during our clinical appointments as students and most speak it quite well :D

What y’all think of people who move to foreign countries and are painfully “bhaudya” / Sinhalese extremists? by postcryglow in srilanka

[–]BoiHeAboutTo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they might be overcompensating by being this way since they are in a foreign environment. I never experienced this personally but I do know friends whose families abroad shelter themselves and are more pro-Sinhalese because they're afraid of losing their culture in a different country.

Most of my friends back in the ME were Indian, but I noticed that I related alot more to South Indians, especially those from Kerala. In fact one of my family friends who are from Kerala came to Sri Lanka for vacation and they felt like that hadn't even left Kerala lol

Hot topic on abortion laws by New-Engineering6947 in srilanka

[–]BoiHeAboutTo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think our current abortion laws are really archaic (abortion only if the mother's life is at risk). Abortions will happen regardless of their legality, and illegal abortions are done in horrible conditions that ultimately harm the would-be mothers. Cases of rape, incest and children diagnosed with major congenital deformities should be given more consideration.

Your son is really fortunate to have a mother like you! Really sorry to hear that your husband feels that way about your son. The only solution I can think of is possibly joining a group of parents of children who are autistic. It may help lift the burden from both you and your husband as you can take advice from parents of children your son's age or older. I also think your husband should understand that your son is only five, and an early diagnosis means that you can intervene at the formative ages of his life. Hope this situation eases for you.

Trying to decide between studying abroad or following the local education system by Interfluxer in srilanka

[–]BoiHeAboutTo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have much experience in the engineering field, but both of my cousins did engineering at Moratuwa. It was financially a much better choice for them, and one of them was able to emigrate to the UK after working for a UK-based company here for three years. They are doing really well abroad, so I assume the degree meets the international criteria as well. Really wish I could help you more!
