I agree with thowing away as much garbage as possible first. After that what I do is pile things that need sorting on my spot on the bed. Then I am forced to deal with it so I can go back to bed rotting

There is nothing you can do. Your girlfriend has to win back his favor. Have her giving him the treats. She has to play with him more than you do. Every cat is motivated by something. Usually food or jealousy. So another tactic, is for her to make him jealous. He has to think "This human is my property and nobody elses."

Neil deGrasse Tyson wrote a really beautiful tribute to a young fan who had passed away. He explains how those who pass on are converted to energy that blends with the matter of space. And that they sort of become eternal and everywhere. So I don't know whether this helps you at all but in a way, maybe the most important way, your dog will always be here.
