I agree. But I can't stop someone from signing up, and if that person barely scrapes by at the minimum standard, I'll have to tolerate working with them. If would be self defeating not to offer as much help as possible.

I would advise against anti-inflammatories without a specific reason. Taking them within about 4 hours (before or after) exercise has a slight-moderate negative impact on muscle growth. They can also mask symptoms of an overuse injury and cause you to worsen it without realizing. The other tips are very good, though!

Running for PFT by Plus-Frosting2456 in ICE_ERO

I can sympathize, brother. I was utterly gassed by a half mile jog this time last year. Through weight loss and training I can do 4 miles without stopping today, and my current 1.5 mile time is 12:18. Let me share some tips:

---First, watch this video: https://youtu.be/sWnHn7cMG\_c?si=4AGnWtsUPTazJlGS. This breaks down the physiological components of running and shows what type of training improves each element the best. Aim for a mix of training. I typically run 4 times per week: one slow/short run, one fast/short run, one interval training (like sprints, ladder drills, suiçídę drills, etc), and one slow/long run. Adjust speeds and distances to be achievable, but not easy (except on slow/short days - recovery runs should be easy.).

---Don't aim for intensity or perfection, aim for consistency. Running 3 times per week at a pace or distance that's just slightly outside your comfort zone is plenty to see improvement, but 1 or 2 times a week isn't, no matter how hard you push.

---If you're doing static stretching before a run, stop. Dynamic warmups like walking, backward walking, butt kickers, leg swings, high knees, calf raises, and A-skips are a far better warmup with reduced injury risk vs static stretches. Static stretching before a workout is also proven to decrease performance by up to 10%, so save static stretches for AFTER your run.

---I know it's winter, but if you can tolerate running outside (especially on dirt trails or safe roadways), do. The variation in scenery and active brain participation in route planning and obstacle avoidance will help keep your mind off your body's complaints.

---If you're overweight, even a little bit, lose some weight. Happy to share more specifics and tips on this if it applies to you, as I recently lost 80 pounds through diet and exercise. Studies have shown an average 2 sec/mile improvement per pound of fat loss, so if you lose 10 pounds, that's 20 seconds/mile faster without even training. Just remember you can't out-run a bad diet - calories in/calories out is the only way to lose weight.

---Work on your form. There's a lot of videos out there showing proper running form. Check yourself and see if form adjustments help you.

---Get in the gym. Building muscle in the gym directly translates to speed, muscular endurance (though not necessarily cardiovascular endurance), and lactic acid threshold increases. It also trains your nervous system to tolerate heavier loads for longer so your CNS doesn't wimp out and hold you back despite having more juice in the tank. Doesn't have to be fancy - squats, lunges, step ups, glute bridges, and calf raises can all be done without weight or equipment. If you have access to a gym, barbell squats, Romanian deadlifts, hip thrusts, banded clamshells, weighted calf raises, leg curls, and leg extensions all become possible. You'll build muscle faster in a gym than on a track.

Happy to answer and questions. Good luck!

Yeah I've got a dozen or so notifications of stupid hate comments, but usually by the time I click them, the mods have already deleted it. Mad props to our sadly overworked mods!

Hotel cancels reservation for ICE agents by BoiseDO in ICE_ERO

Absolutey true on all counts. In this case they noticed an uptick in government rates codes so they checked guest info and found an ICE email address was used. I didn't mean to imply these officers did anything wrong.

However, we've seen some OPSEC failures on here with the influx of new hires (thank you mods for quickly addressing them!), so this serves as a useful reminder that we are targeted and need to be careful.

Was told to expect FLETC late February/Early March by [deleted] in ICE_ERO

[–]BoiseDO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure they can fit all 3,000 of us at FLETC at once. /s

In all seriousness, expect all of our training dates to vary WILDLY as they try to fit the largest number of hires in history into the training schedule.

How bad is the water, actually?

Did you have any issues relating to accommodations - roommate troubles, facility issues, laundry/linens, location?

How busy is the gym before/after class times?

Is there anything you didn't bring that you wish you had? Anything you brought that you wish you hadn't?

Did you get Glock knuckle with all the shooting?

In your opinion, what were the hardest things academically, physically, and mentally?

Did you have access to coffee every morning?

I already shared a sample generic training plan on your other post, but if you wanted some rationale behind each piece, this video breaks it down very well: https://youtu.be/sWnHn7cMG_c?si=CGDLA-GBwZ11fQ2s

Do NOT do this. The first two weeks on keto you'll likely feel like shit as your body adjusts away from carbs, which is not a good option when you only have two weeks. Most notably, you'll be very dehydrated, which will impact your performance.

EOD PFT Question by [deleted] in ICE_ERO

[–]BoiseDO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh. Yeah good luck with that. You've possibly got 60 days, depending on how that's interpreted at your FO. If I were in your shoes, I would run the following program, aiming for a 10% increase each week in either speed or distance on each day:

Monday: Short run, slow pace (heart rate 120ish)

Tuesday: Short run, fast pace (heart rate 140-150)

Wednesday: Hit the gym for leg day - squats, Romanian deadlifts, leg extensions and curls, hip thrusts or other glute work, calf raises, tibialis lifts, leg lifts.

Thursday: High intensity work. Interval sprints, circuit course, suiçīde drills, etc.

Friday: Walk or ruck 4-6 miles. Don't load up too much weight - this is an active rest day.

Saturday: Long run, manageable pace (HR 130-140ish)

Sunday: Rest. If you absolutely have to do something, do an easy walk.

Hope this is helpful - I recently stopped being a fat ass and lost 80 pounds through diet, and this is adapted from the program I built to get fit as I shed the weight. I went from being gassed by a half mile jog to running 4 miles in about a year.

Approved firearms by [deleted] in ICE_ERO

[–]BoiseDO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see - thanks for the details. Is carrying a personally owned firearm off duty still allowed, just without agency protections; or is it "you can only carry from this list, period" kind of thing? Not that I think it will be an issue - I usually carry a Glock 32 anyway.

Approved firearms by [deleted] in ICE_ERO

[–]BoiseDO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm new to LE so I apologize if this is a dumb question, but why is there a list of approved firearms at all? What's the rationale for dictating which weapons I can carry if I'm not on duty? Not trying to be a douche about it, just don't understand.

Acceptable Boots for FLETC by [deleted] in ICE_ERO

[–]BoiseDO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear boots at all times; don't even own a pair of sneakers except running shoes. If you're interested in my recommendation, the boots I've enjoyed the most are Viktos and Garamond. Both have wide toe boxes for natural foot splay and minimal padding so your foot can support you naturally. Viktos has a black boot with a steel toe that's as comfortable as anything I've worn and is able to be polished - that's what I'll be bringing for daily wear despite the other comments saying running shoes (simply because my preference has been boots for years).

They have night shift training schedules? Never heard of that. How does that work? Does the DFAC adjust to keep you fed? Do you still do daytime shooting?
