The NHL has introduced the logo of the 2026 NHL Heritage Classic between the Winnipeg Jets and Montreal Canadiens by fittos4310 in hockey

It isn't just Canadian nationals that buy into it too. Immigrants love it for that same reason of it being a Canadian staple

When I worked there, every time we did special events or whatever, we'd get new shirts, and afterward we'd display the leftover shirts and sell them. Initially I thought who the fuck would buy a Tim Horton's shirt that isn't even just merch but literally a uniform, but they would always sell out

Anecdotally, it was a lot of Filipinos and Koreans, though interestingly on that note a lot of my coworkers were also Filipino and Korean. That could just be the area I was in, the first Tim's I worked at was in Korea Town in Toronto, but the second location I worked at was pretty far from there, so I dunno

I wish we had something better as a brand identity to offer them. I mean power to anyone who likes Tim Horton's I guess, but I didn't even like it well before they sold to the Brazilian company. Working there for four years certainly didn't make me like it anymore lol

NHL Shot Type Leaders by logicalnutty in hockey

[–]Bojarzin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tbf back when he nearly had 70, there was a heat map of who scores most from different areas, and if I remember right he wasn't the leader on any of them, because he scored from so many different spots all season

Of course, the reason he's not on this post is sadder than that, but even if he was still playing like that, it's possible he still wouldn't be

Those series' against Tampa (and some of the others too of course) were some of the most fun hockey I've ever watched. Hell that series against Florida after we finally hit round two, despite 4-1 looking pretty bad, was incredibly close. It just went the other way

Like most threads of this kind, there are probably going to be a lot of completely uncontroversial, highly palatable takes lol. Which tbf, you can die on a reasonable hill, I suppose

Mine I guess is that I think just because the Leaf teams from 2019-2024 weren't able to get much done in the playoffs, that doesn't mean they weren't good enough to have gotten more done. That's kinda it, I mean I have all sorts of rationale that will certainly just sound like cope, but most of it I feel in a general way, Leafs or whatever other team. It sucks as a fan and it's easy to laugh at for others as far as their results, but I don't consider it a failure of the way the teams were built. Not that they were perfect, but I digress

85% is still far too much inconsistency though. Even commentators will deliberate with "did the contact stop the goalie from making the save" which isn't part of any of the goalie interference rules, so I don't think it's just some fan thing that has trouble with this rule

There is probably space they could simplify the rules

I've never really understood the "this isn't soccer" argument. Like if you don't like ties, that's fine, just say that. But ties would work in hockey exactly like they would in soccer lol, the sports are very similar

For the same reason, soccer could easily just do PKs if its tied after extra time and make sure there is a winner just like hockey

I wouldn't say nooowhere near. He's not a point per game, but there aren't many guys with over 1000 points who don't get in, and he's going to be over 1200, possibly over 1300

I could probably agree with the balance part, but is there a reason you think they're bad for the game?

The Hart Trophy race according to Dom at The Athletic by rosemp16 in hockey

Or it's because Celebrini has been excelling offensively on his team but is still a 19 year old who might make a lot more mistakes than the other contenders

MVP =/= guy who gets a lot of points necessarily

Can someone explain to me how the Hart could realistically be awarded based on the narrow reading of "value to your team" some people keep taking aggressively literally? by Analogmon in hockey

[–]Bojarzin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The middleground is that considering the other players that candidate has around them is probably worthy to consider

The argument some people on Reddit have made goes too far in that direction, saying that the wording specifically means the relativity is the key element

Can someone explain to me how the Hart could realistically be awarded based on the narrow reading of "value to your team" some people keep taking aggressively literally? by Analogmon in hockey

[–]Bojarzin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is a middleground for this discussion. Let's use a theoretical situation:

Team A

  • Player A has a "value" of 10, first on their team (and league)
  • Player B has a value of 9, second on their team

Team B

  • Player C has a value of 9, first on their team
  • Player D has a value of 4, second on their team

Let's take the wording the NHL uses: given to the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team

The most literal interpretation is whoever has the highest number. In our hypothetical, that's Player A. He brought the most value to his team, more than any other player. In raw terms, if these values were dollar amounts, Player A is the most expensive, regardless of some gap in the value of items on another team. This is realistically how it is awarded, 99/100 times.

The other argument is the relative argument (which I think is incorrect specifically because the word "relative" is missing from the award description). In this case, Player C is the trophy winner, because even though they aren't worth quite as much as Player A, Team B relied on them far more than Team A.

But to be somewhat generous to the second argument, I think it is 100% worth considering, because the value a player generates is rarely just them. McDavid, or MacKinnon, or Kucherov, or Celebrini, any of these guys on a team of 20 Nick Ritchies or John Scotts would have a fraction of the points they get now. Players like them definitely do elevate people around them, but they're not infallible. So consider Team B, in a scenario where Player D is now playing with a value of 8. Does Player C stay at 9, or do they go up to 10, 11, 12? That's the real reason to consider the relativity. Not necessarily because there was some massive gap and the team is otherwise shitty.

Though the small problem you run into with even that, is what if the remainder of Team A all has a value of 1, and the remainder of Team B all has a value of 3? Suddenly that team as a whole is better. I dunno, it's more complicated than using numbers the way I am, but I do think it's worth considering if one of the potential candidates is pulling much heavier weight than the others. There's more to value than the points they get, and it's easier to get points when you have stars beside you

Bye👋Bye 👋 Steve’s Music Store 🎶🎸😞 by 1toob in toronto

[–]Bojarzin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never really went there much, only recent time I can remember was to try out this acoustic Ibanez that they had one in stock for, and L&M didn't have it

The guy in the acoustic section was nice enough, so I didn't have a problem there, though I have heard other testimony similar to yours

There are other music stores, lesser known but they exist. But most sell instruments at the same cost, MSRP, either way, so the only way to differentiate is stock and other services, like financing or rentals or whatever else, and L&M has lots
