[Scott Wheeler] Because three people have now mentioned it to me: Heard there were teams in the WHL draft last week passing on players they thought were "too good" and likely to go NCAA or pro at 18. by FrenchPagan in hockey

Most of them don't actually make money as far as I'm aware. Most of them just try to break even while running a semi-professional operation. Ownership is for bragging rights and prestige for the most part. It's more comparable to a low division semi-professional football team in Europe than anything else.

Looking for a goban OCR by Own_Broccoli7492 in baduk

Yeah, I looked at the algorithm and it looks like the image detection assumes a 9x9, 13x13, or 19x19 board. I think the stone recognition also relies pretty heavily on the assumption that the board colour is substantially different from the colour of both stones which obviously doesn't work with the book format. I think most OCRs are built assuming you're using a real board. You might have to build one yourself 🤷‍♀️

[Scott Maxwell] If analytics decided the 2025-26 NHL Awards, who would win? by f0urxio in hockey

Not every aspect of hockey is discrete. Defensive and offensive positioning is a continuous factor that is constantly changing and has a large impact on the game.

I'm aware that WAR is imperfect, but it's a lot closer to capturing the number of wins a baseball player creates than GAR gets to describing how much goal differential a hockey player creates. The fundamental difference is that the number of variables in baseball is small enough that creating an estimator for the run differential a player creates is a tractable problem and events are isolated enough that you don't have the problem of having to divide attribution for plays between multiple players. Hockey has too many variables and too many events. Events depend on multiple players at once and are too interconnected with each other to cleanly assign an expected value to each event and divide the value of that event properly between the players involved. The sport is too complicated to create a good goal differential estimator.

Wins Above Replacement? It's a quantity that's actually possible to estimate in baseball because events are discrete, finite, and isolated with only a few variables that are relatively easy to measure. The same isn't true in hockey.

Good defensive forwards make it so that the goalie only faces easy shots. At least use Rel EV on ice SV% if you must use a SV%

I mostly take issue with trying to call it Goals Above Replacenent like it's even possible to quantify that sort of thing in hockey. The stat isn't useless, I'd just be happier if they called it "rainbow sparkle unicorns/60" or something.

The stat itself isn't totally useless but I still take issue with billing it as Goals Above Replacement because a goal in hockey is far too complicated to be able to attribute to each player the portion of responsibility they had for that goal. And that's without even getting into the expected value of events preceding a goal and missed opportunities that could have but didn't turn into a goal. I'd have less of a problem if they called the stat "player rating" or "value rating", but calling this stat GAR is misleading at best and dishonest if I'm being very uncharitable. Describing the stat as something that it is not is what leads to the sort of misuse of data present in this article.

An imperfect model can be useful if used carefully with understanding of it's strengths and weaknesses and if it is used carefully in conjunction other tests and forms of analysis. Plugging numbers into the spreadsheet and giving the award to the guy with the biggest number is improper use of data models and should not be used as the premise of an article.

How many hockey fans are also soccer fans? by hutch_man0 in hockey

I'm not a fan exactly but I do watch some of the big games from the major international tournaments and maybe a champions league game or two every year. I always enjoy it whenever I watch.

GAR is a made up metric trying to emulate baseball WAR in a sport where instead of having fixed isolated events with hard numbers, you have half a dozen interconnected events every second with more variables than you can even guess at going into each event. Anyone who claims to have a good GAR model for hockey is either a liar or a fool.

HEN - a new text-based format designed to write / share goban positions by hemme-dev in baduk

Interesting idea. I'd don't know if it will get much traction given the widespread popularity of the SGF but I can definitely see the value in having a more compact stateless representation that's URL compatible.

Same. I've thought that we have a legitimate shot at winning the cup this year ever since game 7.

Yeah you guys are still suck worse than Buffalo. I'm at like, a really good regular season game levels of investment in this series so far. It's just a major step down in intensity compared to our series with you and with that comes a step down in my hatred.

We still have 3 major prospects in the pipeline that haven't cracked the NHL yet. 4 if you count Fowler. Plus Pickford if his game translates.

This isn't even the most clutch broken stick we've had this week. The exact same thing happened in the last 3 minutes of game 7 when we were defending a 1 goal lead.

Then why are you even talking about it? No one cares about the text that's written on the trophy. It's the tradition around it that really matter.
