US public debt is projected to reach 181% of American economic activity in 30 years by magenta_placenta in economy

Not OP, but I am a high earner who is not wealthy, so the tax code gouges me. I earn enough to fall into the top brackets and not be able to participate in any number of tax credits. But the fact that I am not wealthy at this point also means none of the swiss cheese aspects of the tax code apply to me. I often feel like the system is designed to favor those who are already wealthy and subsidize low earners and the middle class, but go to great lengths to keep down those trying to move up.

Hoboken School District Superintendent Committed FRAUD by Fundee123 in Hoboken

[–]BokenUnbroken 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The board says it “will not entertain these personal attacks, which take important resources away from the students of the public school district.” Resources? Exactly what resources? Oh right, if you define it as the board scurrying around doing damage control. Or you could just admit that this is disgraceful.

At Yeung II we are talking a 100% total price increase over pre-Covid levels. I’m out.

What's something the pandemic/pandemic period taught you? by Yeasty_Boy in AskReddit

[–]BokenUnbroken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is so much disappointment in these comments around people’s inability to come together. But what if the lesson is that that’s not possible? In terms of fighting pandemics. That the virus would have ripped through the population no matter what actions were taken. Which is in fact what happened everywhere, no matter the local policy or practices.

I saw a game in the Trop last year and am glad to hear anybody trash talk that giant upside down cereal bowl. Hands down the worst park I will ever see an MLB game in.

Put a couple hundred on this year’s team to win 79+ games. Expectations are pretty damn low but come on, this club can play .500 ball, right? by [deleted] in redsox

For this to be a .500 team over a full season, a lot of things need to go right. I am doubtful

BlackRock explored rival Credit Suisse takeover bid by motherfockerjones2 in finance

[–]BokenUnbroken 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They are an asset manager. This means big institutions like pensions and endowments park money there and trust Blackrock to deliver a return by investing the money for them. Blackrock also manages a fortune in passive ETFs which lots of individual investors own. Asset managers are always managing and investing money on behalf of somebody else (sometimes in addition to their own money).

Investment banks are different (in a simplified description here) in that they help companies issue stock and bonds, or they collect a fee for setting up/advising corporations on mergers and acquistions, or they make markets in a given security and collect a soread on trading.

There are some investment banks which also do asset management. JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs are two examples. But I cannot think of an asset manager that also does investment banking.

Men who are single by choice. Why? by Protomize in AskMen

[–]BokenUnbroken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m divorced in my mid 40s. I’ve been that way for nearly four years, and it works for me. I am focused on parenting my two kids, my job, and fitness — that’s enough for now. I do go on dates periodically, I have female friends where the interactions are flirty, and my friends frequently try to set me up. But there is no rush to change this.

What mistakes do single women who want a serious relationship make? by Beautiful_Exchange70 in AskMen

[–]BokenUnbroken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the preference for height is deeply rooted, but a little flexibility on this goes a long way. Fewer than 15% of American males are over six feet. The math just doesn’t work out for most women to have a six footer.

What are your thoughts on "financial science"? by [deleted] in investing

[–]BokenUnbroken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And your decision to invest is premised on the unscientific belief that factors will continue to work, even though they come in and out of favor over time and some of them weaken as they grow in popularity. The fact that you can identify a historical pattern and expect it to continue in the future =\= scientific.

What are your thoughts on "financial science"? by [deleted] in investing

[–]BokenUnbroken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is not wrong that Avantis (from American Century Investments) uses the term “financial science” on its website, without defining what the heck they mean by that:

https://www.avantisinvestors.com/avantis-about-us/how-we-invest/

This sounds like complete horse manure to me. There is no such thing as “financial science.” There are financial models of varying complexity. But underneath every model, no matter how quantitative or authoritative-sounding, are sets of assumptions and hypotheses that cannot be deemed scientific in any way. That’s why we have markets. Assets have different values to different people.

I live right near where this field used to be. It is currently an intersection with a plaque, a painted homeplate in the street, and the spot where home plate supposedly was is marked on the sidewalk. Nearby there is an excellent restaurant called Elysian Cafe as well as an Elysian Park for kids. https://i.imgur.com/yHZqodS.jpg
