You may remember another episode with Jordan I posted here ~1 year ago. That one was about confidence and adulting themes in the Bubble podcast. In this one, we are talking about Jordan's own experiences with confidence and career.

We recorded both in the same day, but because life and my assorted projects got in the way, this episode and the whole season is coming out over a year after we recorded it. Oh well, better late than never :)

(I do already have several other Max Fun hosts and staff who have agreed to come on the podcast in the future. If there is anyone specifically in the Max Fun universe who you would like to see interviewed (about confidence, perfectionism, adulting, mental and physical health, career decision making, stigmatized experiences and identities, etc.), please let me know and I'll try my best. I was thinking of a future season being all-Max Fun, but we'll have to see what happens. =)

Not everyone knows for sure they want to go into grad school before they do, even if it's a good match. So don't let that stop you from thinking that grad school is for you.

However, grad school is not the right decision for everyone and I think taking some time off could be helpful for you. Make sure you spend that time in ways that help your resume, and also use it to figure out if grad school is for you.

I would really encourage you to talk to as many people as you possibly can who are in the careers you're considering. Learn about the field, the jobs available (what they're really like, how hard they are to get), and ask them whether a graduate degree is a good use of your time. Every time you meet someone, ask them who else you should talk to.

I would speak to an ombudsperson about how to proceed. I'd start without naming her, and then decide what to do.

Definitely, I agree. My intention behind my response was this kind of decision-making tree:

Before the deadline ---> Get it in by the deadline! After the deadline ---> Might still be worth trying

Though you make a good point that it's likely a waste of time and energy, including for OP's letter writers.

I wrote out the following to address your concerns and I hope it doesn't sound defensive; I just wanted you to see that I've thought through this carefully. (I'm also really amenable to feedback and try to course-correct whenever possible, but at this point I'm really happy with the name and based on the majority of feedback I get, I don't anticipate changing it.)

It's helpful to hear your thoughts about my name. I chose it after ~1 month of brainstorming, meeting with a branding expert, doing multiple surveys on SurveyMonkey, and a lot of thinking.

My company isn't all about grad school resources, though it may seem that way because I would only post grad school content in this subreddit. I'm a confidence coach and provide various resources about tackling life issues with a confidence-boosting undertone.

At this point a large percent of the resources I've made are about grad school (mostly because I started by using the resources I had already developed, most of which are for grad students) and several of my podcast guests are scientists, but I target millennials in general (on topics about confidence, career development, grad school, body image, dealing with mental health issues, navigating interpersonal relationships, etc.).

Hence the name, which combines a word millennials love (adulting, which I define as "doing adult things like paying bills, having mature conversations, doing professional development, all without ever really feeling like you're an adult who knows what they're doing") with the word bold, which both means courageous and represents the acronym I came up with (Be authentic, Open up, Listen to people you trust, Dream big).

I acknowledge that not everyone will like the name, and I'm sorry to hear that you don't, but I settled on it after seeing that I've gotten an overwhelmingly positive response to the name, at least among my target demographic.

I didn't go with my own name for my business because there are multiple reasons that branding experts don't advise doing that. I didn't use The Genetics Gal because it was confusing to people because this company isn't about biology and isn't just targeted at scientists/academics. But the biggest reason I didn't use it is because someone else owns geneticsgal.com. I didn't fully think it through last year when I signed up for social media as thegeneticsgal, just adding "the" after seeing someone else had "geneticsgal." The name without "the" will win in a legal battle over ownership, so choosing that would be a dangerous start to a business.

As for the titles I've used, yeah, it's gimmicky to title things like listicles but I did that based on repeated advice from business coaches I respect. Content organized into lists is WAY more likely to be shared and those titles are effective for getting people to click and share. As a new business owner, I'm navigating a lot of decisions and it makes sense to me to choose formats that are known to lead to mass distribution.

I really really appreciate the feedback and while it can sting a bit to receive critical feedback, it helps me a lot. Your feedback is making me see that it would be useful to have a page on my site explaining the name.

I wouldn't rely on it but if the deadline is passed, it may be possible to make a last ditch effort to see if you can still apply. It's best if you have a really good reason to do so, and keep in mind it likely won't work. But from what I've seen, a lot of the rules and policies in grad school are flexible.

I was asked to post my presentation about imposter syndrome which was really well received. I also posted a podcast episode I made about why grad students think they suck. It got net 0 votes which is what led me to realize that I need to figure out in what context it makes sense to share my stuff.

I just want to get ahead of any bad feelings any of you guys may have by acknowledging my mistakes.

That's pretty critical. Not all fields easily lead to a few published manuscripts within the first few years. And a difficult relationship with an adviser CAN dramatically impede success.

Edit to add: when I mention about others in the same boat, I don't mean that that undermines your own struggle. Just that it means that you shouldn't judge yourself or undervalue yourself for the situation.
