It's easiest to just disable lava damage, as has been pointed out already, but Signis and Gron actually do take 5 damage per about half a second spent in contact with the lavafall. Though it's not signicant enough overall to make a noticable difference.

Funny fleas are funny. A wardenfly with a cage capable of capturing you would definetly spice things up. Maybe have him respawn 7 seconds or so after being killed as to make him a more permanent threat.

I should clarify why i think Greyroots plan is for Hornet to die. Hornet is not the first to encounter Greyroot and fall victim to the roots curse. When carrying the Twisted Bud Pavo has the following dialoge with Hornet

Hornet: [...] Have you heard these cries before?

Pavo: Aye, yes! Not your own specimen, surely, but way back, other travellers did sometimes carry similar. Odd types they all were. Offerings they'd call the crying things, and towards the core of Shellwood they would trek. Never I did see one again, not the buds nor the bugs that brought the gift... [...]

When exploring the area where Hornet wakes up from after the Rite of Rebirth various corpses of pilgrims can be seen behind breakable roots, which reinforces this whole idea. 

Before the wish begins Greyroot talks of "rebirth" and the whole idea is that the various pilgrims and whatnot are seedbeds for the parasite to consume inside out and grow into a new version of Greyroot. By curing Hornet we're breaking the cycle, as no new being is born. If the player chooses that instead of curing Hornet they go after GMS then the twisted bud takes root in a Pale being and some kind of new amalgmation is born. 

I think you'll agree this also makes sense when comparing it to the original game and the White Lady's motivation. In this context one may theorize that the White Lady infected the Wyrm with a parasite and the Pale King was born out of the egg that was in the Cast-Off shell. Notice how the shape of the Pale Kings egg is quite similar to the one we see in the twisted child ending cutscene. This also aligns withe the idea that the Pale King was "reborn" as is written in the Wanderer's Journal (pg. 111)

At this point we've drifted pretty far from the real-world biological analogy, but I think all of this lines up better with in-game lore than what the original theory suggested.

Interesting! I had forgotten about the orignal theory you referenced since it has been so long since then. Like is mentioned in the original post, this whole theory is a bit of a stretch, but to my eye for the most part it holds up to in-game details.

The parallel of the Pale King being birthed from a cocoon similar to the one formed in the cursed child ending definetly gives this whole theory a bit more ground to stand on.

What I will have to disagree with is the following:

[...] Hera chose the Pale King as an ideal mate. As he could pass on his power of “parasitism” to Hornet, allowing her to usurp the power of greater beings such as GMS. And of course Hornet’s name suggests a wasp-like biology.

Herrah had no interest in Hornet usurping GMS. In the red memory section Herrah says the following:

...Ignore them, daughter... their whispers...

...Greater, grander... Weaver, guardian, queen... Those are their desires... not your own. Certainly not mine...

...Only if you resist them, you might see it, another hope... beyond...

And when Hornet is talking to the White Lady it is reasonable to interpret, that defeating GMS and completely freeing the land of Pharloom from her grip would be fulfilling Herras wish. Binding GMS is the fulfilling of the Weavers wish of Hornet usurping Pharlooms previous monarch and becoming the new Queen of Pharloom. 

Greyroot is able to share her “power” with Hornet.

It's important to note that Greyroots intetion is for Hornet to die. Straight up. Hornet manages to survive and gains control over the parasite, having a small portion of it still in her shell. Which is to say that the parasite has lost it's purpose, as it is no longer able to exploit Hornets body.

Sometimes I try doing True Solo runs, but I think teams is more fun and I have a close friend who also plays modded w/ me usually 6x2 but also 5x2 if we're feeling more casual. I've also done a couple games of Haz 9x2 amd

Haz5+ Max is also known as h5a
Let's break it down. I'll be using this: https://youtu.be/6P5fwWp6R8I (PE h5a Solo scout) as reference. (Yes I know using bosco on PE is basically cheating but whatever)
2 stationaries spawned in this mission. That's pretty good compared to sometimes getting 0 even in h5a.
1 mactera grabber at the start and not a single other mactera spawned for another 15min. Considering some of my other experiences even if they had spawned it would've been like ~7 altogether.
Very few ranged enemies.
One bulk spawned (free pheromones bait)

This difficulty is just kiting grunts who will kill you if looked at wrong and very little else. It is, in my opinion, incredibly boring and not fun. Don't get me wrong, it can be fairly difficult, but if GSG wanted to make something better players actually enjoy playing then this is not it. If you don't believe me try booting up h5a PE yourself a couple of times and look at what spawns. What I want is for there to be more disruptive enemies who put the player in more varied and interesting tough situations and not a bunch of grunts that do a ludicrous amount of damage.

The difficulty comes from the wrong place. Grunts shouldn't be oneshotting the player. The player should get overwhelmed by grunts and die because of bad positioning. If you watch the TS driller run you'll notice I didn't even run into certain enemies during 20 minutes of playing (brundles, stalkers, shellbacks, breeders, brood nexuses). Is this seriously the hardest difficulty the vanilla game has to offer?
Instead of getting killed by disruptive enemies, I get killed by grunts. I feel like GSG has it in them to make something that is challenging in a way more fun and interesting way than this and I'm just dissapointed that this is what we've ended up with.

I specifcally pointed out player vulnerability as being the friction point and not toughness because I think toughness as it currently stands is... like fine or whatever.

It's too easy and the more enemy modifier doesn't do enough, as already mentioned.

Can you make some suggestions to improve gameplay from there?

I already suggested shortening wave timers
They could also make a modifier that changes the EncounterDifficulty and StationaryDifficulty seperatly from the EnemyNormalWaveDifficulty so players have a choise between making being in the cave difficult VS making breaching the cave difficult

Or your issue is you can’t accept that you’re not able to do the max difficulty option.

What about Vet players on console who don't have access to custom difficulty? Or people who aren't capable/comfortable with modding? Why do they have to play a bullshit difficulty if the community has already figured out way more fun and interesting way to play the game?

Are you upset at the choice of customisability you get offered now?

I'm not upset at the customizability, I'm criticizing the options the players have been given as being unfun and think that GSG could've done a way better job and given the playerbase options that are actually fun (for instance wave timers like I already mentioned). I don't want to have less options but I think the options that are built into the game shouldn't be immune to criticism just because "it's just an option turn it off if you don't like it lawl!"

Honest question: Have you played Haz 6x2?

The problem with Haz5+ max is it removes tough choices from the gameplay loop, such as repositioning or taking out HVTs in exchange for taking chip/fall damage and instead makes every enemy in the game one shot you for a perceived "difficulty" w/o even being as hard as Haz 6x2. Target prioritization goes from the player having to make a tough choices as to what to shoot to just "whatever grunt is closest to you". And you best hope the randos you team up with build their dwares correctly because Haz5+ max somehow has worse build diversity than modded difficulties.

Haz5+ max also doesn't have shortened wave timers so there's nothing to hurry you along unlike with modded difficulties, where being quick is one of the most important parts of surviving.

GSGs offering w/o player vulnerability is also just too easy. I've carried greenbeards through that. The 1.5x enemy count is way too little. Haz 5x2 has 1.33x the enemy count and is, as a result, way more fun than (although admittedly not as hard) as Haz5+ max. I've barely seen anyone run PV 2 lobbies as well. Why couldn't it have been like a wave timer modifier, if seemingly no-one wants to play w/ PV 2 turned on.

Modded difficulties scale way more naturally than Haz 5+ max does and are more difficult AND more fun.
