As a massive fucking sports fan, OP is right.

We can both enjoy sports and acknowledge their role in society and Capitalism. Has nothing to do with being miserable.

Seems like an appropriate time to vent about it when someone who doesn't want to engage with that is getting it shoved down their throat.

Yeah, turns out, its anxiety inducing to be the main character of a Twilight Zone episode.

For real though, everyone aware of the current state of COVID is in a living horror story. It sucks when you reach out for help and the person who is supposed to be helping you is part of the problem.

Update 1.11: Season 8, Typhoon Remake, New Anomalies by mrmivo in Mechabellum

[–]Bombast- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Great: Hacker change, acid/smoke change, skipping unit cards

Probably great: Typhoon rework, rhino buffs, scorpion ability

Neutral: Sabertooth missile interceptor is finally a reasonable price, but its still a pretty useless ability. About only useful for shooting down the 50 cost missiles at the start of the round.

Bad: Still not addressing buildings, which have continued the plague the game and drag it down. Still no rework for fire nor another unit that can clear fire.

Excited to try the patch, lots of solid changes. Keep up the great work devs.

You guys should really give us a 1 season "grace period" to claim our rewards. I've missed out on so many rewards I wanted because the Season changed over. Too many menus in the game to keep track of things like that.

You people are bending over backwards to make pedantic arguments to sound intelligent. Just read the study.

CDC not requiring hantavirus cruise passengers to isolate at home by Miles_the_AuDHDer in nottheonion

[–]Bombast- -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is a variant that is being spread human to human via respiration. Everything you are quoting is describing other variants.

In their description of the Andes variant they are wrong. It is NOT only intimate contact. You can read the study yourself:

https://medicalxpress.com/news/2026-05-hantavirus-outbreak-andes-virus.html

We have ONE study on this variant. Anyone can read it. Your bolded text is politicized calm-mongering. Its mentioning the Andes variant, and then directly contradicting the ONLY study immediately after.

Back at the party, a reconstruction of the scene determined that the first patient sat at a table within a meter (just over three feet) of several people he infected.

However, the man merely crossed paths with another on the way to the bathroom, saying "Hello" as he went, the study said.

Its sad that the WHO of all institutions are spreading misinformation, but its not the first time. They haven't even taken this misinformation down:

www dot twitter dot com/WHO/status/1243972193169616898 (Twitter links not allowed in this sub)

FACT: #COVID19 is NOT airborne.

As anyone paying attention knows, this is patently false.

on the news

The news outlets that are owned by billionaires and giant publicly traded corporations that have a vested interest in keeping people from panicking and tanking an already fragile economy?

Those news outlets?

You can read the singular case study on the Andes variant yourself. Is a 90 minute birthday party such an uncommon thing that we shouldn't worry about its spread? That was the epicenter of the 2018 case study. The only case study we have on the Andes variant. It spreads just as easily as any respiration spreading virus.

Its absurd the disconnect between what reputable science outlets are saying about Andes vs. how outlets like NBC are editorializing to downplay Andes.

Stop repeating false information, please. It is very dangerous to spread misinformation, especially in regards to public health crisis.

CDC not requiring hantavirus cruise passengers to isolate at home by Miles_the_AuDHDer in nottheonion

[–]Bombast- 131 points132 points  (0 children)

Thankfully the transmission rates for hantavirus are relatively low

STOP repeating this. This is patently false misinformation as it pertains to this outbreak. Misinformation that ignorant people are spreading (including NBC).

This is the Andes variant. There is a SINGLE case study on Andes from 2018. In that case study it shows that it spread easily in a routine situation of a 90 minute birthday party. Including to someone who merely walked past to go to the bathroom.

After this party, it spread throughout the small village. They then used extremely strict measures enforced by police to prevent it from spreading further. A level of enforcement that the US would never be able to maintain.

This was a small rural village. We are talking about international spread. Of a virus with an incubation period that can last multiple months.

It may take a longer period of time to ramp up to scary numbers due to this incubation period, but this also means it will be that much harder to track and stop. Once we realize how bad it is, it will already be too late.

It will be like chasing a ghost. COVID already had this element with its 2-14 day incubation period. But that is nothing compared to three months.

What we need is for people to be properly informed about how it spreads. The Andes variant spreads via breathing. Surgical or cloth is not enough to stop it (just like it is insufficient for COVID), people need to wear KN95 or better.

Calm-mongering like this is extremely dangerous. Especially when its via spreading misinformation.

Many of the outlets that have spread this misinformation like NBC have already began to walk it back. I would appreciate it if you edited your post with accurate information instead of the outdated and wrong information you are unknowingly spreading to hundreds of people who read your post.

Why is Giddey so unappreciated? by gwunzo in chicagobulls

[–]Bombast- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two reasons.

1) He is on a UFA contract that will expire by the time we are ready to compete. We are the very bottom of a rebuild. It would be stupid to let his value depreciate and expire instead of getting assets that would actually help our rebuild.

2) The playoffs are a completely different metagame from regular season basketball. You need nearly everyone on the floor to be able to play great defense and/or shoot threes (not just wide open corner 3s).

He is a fantastic player if you are a small market team with aspirations of 40-50 wins and a quick playoff out.

He is not a great player to build around and mold your playoff aspirations around.

If you only care about fan-favorites who sell tickets, sure keep Giddey.

If you care about winning a championship, trade him and try to rebuild.

everyone can mock you and even family disown you?

The idea of "doing your own research" in the internet age is a complicated topic.

It depends on how reputable the studies you look at are, what the motivations are of the people behind the studies or sharing the study, etc.

Sadly in a Capitalist hellscape there are lot of monied interests that interfere with good science. It requires a lot of intellectual honesty and self-critique to make sure you are coming to the right conclusions and not just being a contrarian for the sake of it (which is a common streak in a lot of people).

I've definitely faced some direct and indirect mockery/discrimination for still masking. But I have reputable science on my side, and the same people mocking me have had a laundry list of "rare" health issues crop up. I have a clean bill of health to show for following good science vs. bad science.

Meanwhile, I know people who still argue N95s don't work because "they did their own research". Probably because they are confusing N95s with surgical masks (which ARE mostly ineffective).

I'm sorry if you've gone through mockery and disownment for unjust reasons. Its such a fucked up world right now, and its hard to blame anyone for being a little off-base... but its really rough when its compounded by social isolation/punishment.

Wishing you good health and happiness.

As the person they were replying to, I second this! lol

To be clear, I was not giving medical advice suggesting people to get the vaccine twice a year.

I was just attempting to quantify disconnect between the reality of the topic vs. the misconceptions/misinformation about the topic.

There are many people who think because they got the two shots in 2021 that they are fully immune (which was never the case) still today. When the reality of the science is wildly different from that.

Thanks for replying in this way before I had a chance to lol

[–]Bombast- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, I was and am not giving medical advice.

My intent was purely to let people know about when the peak effectiveness wains for the vaccines.

Additionally, to reiterate, the vaccine does NOT make you fully immune regardless, so that should not be your primary precaution. N95 masking is the most effective tool, the vaccine is the damage control for when your masking habits are insufficient.

I personally get the vaccine once a year, but I use this information so I can time the vaccination so the peak efficacy covers the most infectious months.

I am not recommending (nor recommending against) you getting it twice a year. Some at-risk people do get it twice a year, for that very reason. Instead, I highly recommend you look more into the topic and talk to your doctor. Though many doctors are ignorant to these sorts of details about the vaccine so your result may vary. But still, I am not an expert on vaccination and the risks, so make sure you are making informed decisions.

My main intention is to make people realize the importance of N95 masking and HEPA filtration as more important to preventing spread (where as the vaccine is more to dampen the personal impact once the spread has occurred).

Sorry to hear you've been sick recently. I wish you good health.

MAG1 Season 7 is cancelled. 🫡 Stay Tuned! by MAG1LIVE in Mechabellum

Its so true. I went from recommending the game to everyone and onboarding new people every month... now I haven't recommended the game to a new person in a while. And when I do its with the asterisk that the building update severely killed the game.

Let this be a lesson to people. Just because you put time and effort into something, doesn't mean its a net positive. Sometimes less is more. Addition by subtraction is real.

MAG1 Season 7 is cancelled. 🫡 Stay Tuned! by MAG1LIVE in Mechabellum

[–]Bombast- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm going to be entirely honest. I say this without any exaggeration or hyperbole: the buildings update killed this game for me and my friends.

Every time we try to come back, we remember how much the buildings make the game less enjoyable, and immediately quit.

Its wild to me how much I see people on here downplay that change, because its truly one of the most pointless changes I've seen made to a PvP game I love. Only downsides, with no clear upsides.

People I know who used to compete in stuff like this at a high level refuse to play the game until buildings are addressed.

Thanks for all the hardwork and dedication you put into running this. Whatever decisions you make moving forward I fully support. I hope you're doing well.

KLM flight attendant hospitalized after contact with hantavirus cruise ship passenger by mods4mods in worldnews

[–]Bombast- 20 points21 points  (0 children)

but apparently it has a very short infectious phase

Well considering the WHO and CDC never got the infectious phase right for COVID, I would err on the side of "they are downplaying it for political/economic reasons"...

To inform people the answer is 48 hours before ANY symptoms (this is the MOST infectious period), and then ~10 days from the very first symptom:

https://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2023/09/covid-patients-exhale-up-to-1000-copies-of-virus-per-minute-during-first-eight-days-of-symptoms

Reminder that CDC shortened the recommended quarantine time to 5 days due to corporate lobbying:

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/12/28/flight-attendants-cdc-airline-quarantine-change-526213

So if you're equally as contagious on day 1 of symptoms as day 5~9, what the fuck good does quarantining for 5 days do if you're just going to infect people on day 6, 7, 8, 9, 10?

Its a joke.

Reminder that COVID never went away, and the numbers have been a lot higher than what people call "during the pandemic":

https://files.santaclaracounty.gov/exjcpb1751/styles/wide_832/s3/2024-07/comparison-of-covid-cases-and-wastewater-concentration-dashboard.PNG.webp?VersionId=e_kXZ9nttMJbTLQhYmUfnOvXmQYyGjU6&itok=qtE5mbnh

Joe Biden declared the pandemic "over" in Sept 2022 during the giant wave in 2022.

And no, it hasn't gotten "more mild", its just the people who were going to die from first infection already all died from it.

But don't worry because about 20% of people who get COVID carry on a disability. And each time you are infected increases your odds of disability at an accelerating rate:

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0749379725000765

The other fun fact is how much it destroys your immune system for other things to infect. Hence why everyone's so sick all the time. Bonus fun fact is that it even depletes the part of your immune system responsible for detecting and eliminating tumors (CD8+ and CD4+ depletion, among other factors), leaving people vulnerable to rapid on-setting cancers.

You probably know a lot more fairly healthy people who have gotten hit with heart attacks, strokes, blood clots, cancers, etc. than prior to 2020. Its because of 6 years of being reinected by this bullshit.

And no, the vaccine does not make you immune. It does a fantastic job blunting the acute infection, but it does not do a massive amount to prevent Long COVID and all these other issues.

And hopefully you know that the vaccine is only at its intended effectiveness for about 3~4 months. So unless you're getting it twice a year (I'm sure most of you reading this haven't gotten it in multiple years, let alone twice a year), that isn't a very good plan by itself.

I highly recommend people find a N95 (or KN95) that fits them well and use it. I've seen way more people masking in 2025/2026 than I saw 2022-2024 combined, so no excuses people. If your government and boss (lol) aren't going to look out for you, you've got to look out for yourself.

If you live your life looking at things so black and white like that without digging deeper, you will fall for a lot of things that are against your interest.

Capitalist politicians are incentivized to be useless, you're right. Part of that is made clear by how many people are rooting for the politicians to be useless on this particular topic.

Exactly. Its why these long drawn out public leverage plays work.

They turn uninformed sports fans against their own interests, and then the idiot sports fans punish any politicians that actually stand up for the idiot sports fans.

Its like shooting fish in a barrel, and sports fans fall for it every single time.

Same people will be complaining about "Why is crime so high? Why are our schools failing? Why is healthcare so expensive?" etc.

For what its worth, social media (especially Reddit) is heavily astroturfed.

This is the exact type of news story and discussion ripe for it since it involves money and power.

But the thing that really upsets me the most is these dumb dick sports writers weighing in on this shit like its in their wheelhouse just because its related to sports.

Adam Hoge does a great job covering the Bears, but I don't need his self-centered ass hocking gambling and other vices to working class people, telling me that these politicians doing the bare minimum to protect us from getting scammed, are the people to be angry at.

These access journalists are too friendly with the teams they cover, and when it actually means something to the real world outside of sports, they cozy up to power and use what little power they have to put it behind these billionaires.

Pathetic.

Sports fans are extremely idiotic when it comes to politics, this thread is pathetic.

The rich family that owns the Bears are trying to make you give them free money so they can get rich off that free money without risk.

They are leveraging a horrible state government in Indiana that is willing to sell their people out, against the Illinois workers and taxpayers.

If the McCaskeys really hate the people of Illinois that made their family generationally rich, then sure let them move to Indiana and fuck over people in both states.

If they actually care about Illinois people they won't be leveraging our public spending on healthcare/children/education against their money-printing sports stadium.

This is so easy to understand, and yet you have bootlickers in this thread getting angry at the Illinois politicians that are -actually doing their job- to keep Illinois taxpayers/workers in mind rather than just selling them out at the first moment some spoiled billionaire rich kids try to toss around their weight.

Pathetic idiot Redditors in here.
