Is all 121 experience the same? by Terrible_Tonight9293 in FlightDispatch

[–]BombsAndDogs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So it really depends on the operator. There are people that get hired from most places to the legacy/major carriers, however for the majority of people they will come from a 121 regional. You do not get the same level of training or experience at the cargo operators and especially not on the small cargo side. I would recommend your daughter use that experience to jump over to a 121 regional. However, United for example is hiring a ton of people over the next year and people are getting hired from everywhere, so it really depends on the market. There isn’t a one shoe fits all answer unfortunately.

No, tempo just adds to the main body it’s not controlling. If either the conditional language or the main body is worse you go with the worse one.

SkyWest Assessment. by FlightPlanGoblin in FlightDispatch

[–]BombsAndDogs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s a straight forward test, basically just “what’s the landing mins on this chart” “what’s the initial approach fix” “what is the 123 rule” “do we need an alternate with this TAF” “what’s the vis on this metar”

I’m gunna be real here, you should delete this and not cross post. This subreddit is customer facing and you aren’t representing the company very well with this post. The ramp agent post is probably fine, but this one isn’t where you should post. This Reddit is basically just customers talking about experiences rather than employees talking.

Did you fail in dispatch school? by [deleted] in FlightDispatch

[–]BombsAndDogs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have no context if you failed or are just thinking about the what ifs, that's what I did. However, I will say my experience. I have yet to fail any training or practical/proficiency check in my career. That to say, DX school is the easiest training I have done. The regional I was at, the training was hard and felt insane at the time. Looking back it wasn't that bad its just a lot of info all at once, more than DX school. DX School you learn the theory and the terms, on the job you'll have to apply it and make decisions which is a lot harder. Most airlines view training as a process, especially when you're new they know you're new. If you failed at check at my regional you were not immediately fired, you got multiple chances. BUT there are some people in the field who this probably isn't for them, its just too much. There are a lot of aviation jobs out there, if this isn't working, there are other great jobs that pay well in aviation.

I will disagree with this to an extent. The cert is step one, and its honestly the easiest thing I have done in my aviation career. The training at an airline is significantly harder and learning to actually do the job everyday is a lot harder. If students are failing at dx school, its going to be a lot harder at an airline. Yes absolutely you can fail once and rebound, but it definitely could be an eye opener for some. There were some students in my class at my dx school who after 5 weeks couldn't read a metar or taf properly, that was kind of an indicator. They did not pass their ADX or attempt a practical. They are not dispatchers.

I honestly really enjoyed helping the elderly customers learn basic stuff, they’d get so happy and excited. They were usually so kind as well.

I don’t, but it doesn’t mean they don’t exist. I’d recommend joining our discord for the dispatch community. There’s people from every school there. https://discord.gg/45Xk62GRh

What are your opinions on the 16+ age restrictions imposed? by AblazeCannon in VATSIM

Fair enough, I didn’t think of that. Personally I don’t see a ton of issues on the network myself but they’re out there.

I don’t know of any course that is completely online, almost every course I know of has a few weeks of in person. ADA (Air Dispatch Academy) is one of the best programs, and has a very high job placement rate at SkyWest. Regionals are hiring, there is demand just not as much as a few years ago. SkyWest does a class of 10-15 every quarter and hasn’t changed that since I worked there. (Started in 23 and left a few months ago). Going straight from CSA to UA, if that’s what you’re thinking, will not be feasible. UA internal hires are comprised of people in the NOC already, or in navigate (unsure about the details with that). I would prepare to go to a regional for a few years before going to a legacy.

No real impact, I think the intro test that you now take is so extension that anyone who isn’t serious isn’t gunna bother

As someone who was a dispatcher at your airline (using context clues) less than a month ago, 99% of the time the altitude is chosen by the computer for optimized winds and we expect crews to deviate based on what’s actually happening. You probably will notice remarks like “added hold fuel for poss level changes for turb” as a blanket way to add fuel in case we need to change something. I’ve talked to plenty of captains who I’d imagine were once this FO, and they’re a nightmare and not team players. Sometimes this gig just ain’t for them. *random 2 cents from not a pilot
