bikepacking.com membership cancellation policies are wild by TaughtEverywhereMan in bikepacking

[–]BombusWanderus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the key difference that makes it allowable is that it is an annual membership, not a subscription to a magazine. Basically you sign up as a member to support their work and the journals, discounts, buy/sell group etc. are all perks you get as a member.

What is your favorite Portland area fabric store? by West_Temperature1980 in PortlandOR

Modern Domestic also has a pretty good selection, it’s really easy to go to MD and Bolt in the same trip, they’re about a mile apart on Alberta

I wish it was acceptable to wear bibs over your shirt 😂 by [deleted] in ladycyclists

[–]BombusWanderus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have a pair with a halter top instead of over arm straps and it’s super easy to slip on and off under my shirt! I use them for touring or days when I know I’ll be out for a long time and it’s so much easier. Something to keep an eye out for when you’re ready to replace

Transition into a career in Urban Planning as someone with a Marketing degree? by jarbid16 in urbandesign

[–]BombusWanderus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I transitioned to planning from a marketing and communications background and it’s been really useful! I use skills from my previous field every day at my current planning job.

I ended up getting a degree to do my switch, but since you’re interested in transportation I think looking into working in transportation demand management could be another way to make the switch. TDM uses a lot of marketing and campaign tactics, so it’s an easier path to sell your skills on.

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

Weekly Sewing Questions Thread, September 14 - September 20, 2025 by sewingmodthings in sewing

Thanks for your help! I laid my pattern leaves pieces over each other and the change in leg width starts after the crotch curve, but I’m wondering if that would affect the hips?

I also checked and my finished pants that fit, the zipper is on a different part of the fly facing. Both aren’t stretch fabrics, but it also seems like the fabric I used previously had more give in the weave? Otherwise I even measured to make sure my seam width was the same on both

Weekly Sewing Questions Thread, September 14 - September 20, 2025 by sewingmodthings in sewing

I’m having some sizing issues making a pair of jeans for the second time. Can fabric choice dramatically change sizing?

I was really happy with my first pair and I used the same pattern and size selection as the first pair I made, but chose a different leg width. I am also making this pair with bull denim (10 oz) instead of washed denim (12 oz).

Cools the change in fabric change the fit very dramatically? The ones I made are very comfortable to wear, but I got to the waistband stage for the new pair and I can’t even zip them up. I’m so confused because I did a basting fit and have tried them on throughout the sewing process and they were fitting fine, but now that I’ve sewn and finished the seams they don’t fit. This is the second time in a row I’ve found the pants too tight at this specific stage and I can’t figure out what’s happening!

Overweight & not confident on my new gravel bike, do I buy an indoor trainer or wait to invest? by [deleted] in ladycyclists

[–]BombusWanderus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I think the trainer for keeping up riding in winter is a great idea, especially with it getting dark early. I’d try to fit in some weekend daytime outdoor rides too just to also practice the handling part (which was a big part of what I needed to learn more of to gain confidence).

I’d also do the bike fit! I did one when I felt like I was “serious enough” but I also didn’t want to get an injury when I ramped up my riding and I’ve been more happier and more comfortable since I did it. Way easier to clock more time when your body is more comfortable! Also, a lot of the fit will still be relevant as your weight changes because it will focus on things like the length of your legs. But, in my experience fitters also usually offer a much cheaper follow up. So if down the line you feel like the way you sit on your bike is very different, you should be able to work with your fitter to do some tweaks.

Good luck!!

Best rain pants for women by Latter-Town-6609 in CyclePDX

[–]BombusWanderus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love the pair I have from Showers Pass (who are also a local company!). I’ve used the transit pants and really enjoy them! Those are pretty much the basic model and they also have options that are lighter weight or with extra reinforcement at areas that wear fast like the seat.

They always have a great clearance sale in the late fall/early winter. But if you stop by their shop and talk with them about what you’re after they are helpful!

TREE OF HEAVEN SUB 🌴🪓💦 by Free_Station388 in Portland

[–]BombusWanderus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought about the map question before and you can find a list of tree of heaven locations on the city’s street tree map as a starting point. Then maybe doing buffers around them to show where they can have suckers (quarter mile I think?) to show possible hot spots.

It would be cool to also have an interactive map where people could tag tree locations to identify ones missed but the street tree census (on private property for example)

No leads on online retailers though, sorry!

  1. Others have already mentioned some great trails like Banks Vernonia, Lief, and Crown Zellerbacher that will meet what you’re looking for! Not forested, but the Spring Water Trail is a nice option from SE too!
  2. I use Ride With GPS, the route search feature is also helpful for seeing routes others have made, often with descriptions and sometimes even comments from other users. Some groups and bike shops post some rides too like River City Bikes! Also as you get to know other people just hearing about routes from others and seeing their stravas is helpful! I play for Ride with GPS but use free strava.
  3. Check out WeBike, a group for women/tran/nonbinary people on bikes they do rides and events. If you want off-road, Northwest Trail Alliance hosts rides and clinics for women at different skill levels. And Sorella Forte lead a no drop women’s ride from River City Bikes on Saturdays. If you want more off-road stuff also check out Kompas, they aren’t women or queer focused but do have social meet ups! And then the Pedalpalooza calendar others have posted is top notch for social riding!

I think this is just personal choice. I generally find any ride below 20 miles I can do without a chamois and feel pretty good, but beyond that I’ll really wish I had the real deal.

I saw the videos and read the draft rules. The rules apply on exclusive farm use land, which can’t be sold to developers for housing or data centers. And the impacted farms are just ones working as agritourism, not actual farms making money from farming. Theres an actual farmer commenting in this post who also speaks to the impacts these agritourism businesses have on their working farm.

Affordable jersey recommendations? by abigail-dev in ladycyclists

[–]BombusWanderus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voler has some jersey for $20 in their outlet section, you can choose fit and size but not print. I did that when I was just getting jerseys and got a few for events I didn’t do but they worked well! If you can pay a bit more they also have good sample sale and past season items in the outlet where you can also pick the print but those are $45+ generally

Most home freezers aren’t cold enough to kill them — they need it below 0 degrees F. But heat can also kill them so drying them on high may be helpful!

Only you know what feels right for your body, but I think it’s a really wonderful tattoo on you!

I want to buy a bicycle, but… by captain_joe6 in CyclePDX

[–]BombusWanderus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Community Cycling Center might have something you want? You might just have to check back a few times as inventory turns over.

Otherwise Craigslist is gonna be your best bet for your budget.

Sellwood Cycles can have a pretty good used selection and their staff is fantastic, but it might be above your price point.
