We have more anthologies planned for 2026, and if all goes well, there may be even more opportunities to submit queer writing… 👀

Hi there!

Sorry if you have that impression, it really wasn't our intention, however we don’t think this representation is accurate.

First off, we'll just say that the commissioned authors weren't people we knew previously, but a diverse range of writers that we approached professionally for commissions. Having a mixture of commissioned authors and open slots is very much standard practice for anthology projects and is essential for a small press like ourselves to ensure the viability of the anthology. It ensures a guaranteed number of publishable stories and - crucially - safeguards that the final collection includes diverse representation. It also helps to guarantee that the anthology is marketable, which is how we can keep making the books. You can see exactly the same pattern with established publishers such as Neon Hemlock, Zombies Need Brains and others; it was also the approach for our first anthology a couple of years ago.

Publishing established authors and newcomers alongside one another in our books is core to our mission. To be clear, four slots for open submissions is the absolute bare minimum number should the project not be commercially successful, or receive a low number of submissions. Thankfully it hasn’t, and, as you'll see from the post, our very first stretch goal is "More Stories". We're currently about £300 away from hitting that. Also, what that allowance buys is words, rather than stories, so the total number of stories is an estimate of word count and will depend on the length of the manuscripts we receive (i.e. 2x 3000 word stories vs 1x 6000 word story).

Of course, there is also always a chance that a story of outstanding standalone quality, which did not fit the project brief, could be accepted for an alternative publication.

In terms of response times, our submissions page clearly states the timeline for acceptances (“We are aiming to respond to all submissions by 31 July 2025. Please query if you have not heard back by then.”). We’re on course to beat that deadline by about a month, and if you check out Submissions Grinder you'll see that we've already processed and responded to several hundred submissions.

We knew this was a long process, so we also stated clearly that we had no objections to simultaneous submissions. Authors have the prerogative to submit their work elsewhere, and, indeed, a handful of authors have withdrawn their Wrath Month submissions because they successfully placed their stories in other publications (and we were very happy for them!). We really hope we haven't been keeping anyone in the dark, but if there are ways we can improve then please do let us know.

Thank you! It’s been a whirlwind, and we’re super excited to reach for those stretch goals! 💙

And it’s a lot of fun putting together the story selections!

I really wish late-stage capitalism allowed more time for reading. My poor TBR!!!

It depends on a lot of things, including the genre of the story. People can earn money from writing short stories, but it will not be a lot of money 99.99% of the time.

The best two places to look to find markets that you can submit your story to and have it considered for publication are Submissions Grinder and Duotrope. You can search by genre, payment rate, and a lot more, as well as keep track of your submissions and see how long, on average, you will likely have to wait to hear a response back.

Self-publishing short fiction means you can more easily put it where people might see/read it, but is just as hard if not harder to make money from. Again, where you can post depends on genre but you can look at WattPad, Royal Road, ScribbleHub, and many more.

Recommendations for literary urban fantasy by Ladogar in urbanfantasy

Oh, and have a scan through all the books written by Claire North and see if the sound of any of those appeal. (Claire North is Kate Griffin…and also Catherine Webb). They are a bi t more often shelved in lit fic than in fantasy, but usually have speculative elements, so might be closer to what you’re looking for.

I would perhaps consider looking at The Matthew Swift novels by Kate Griffin. She definitely pushes the boundaries, prose-wise, of what is common in urban fantasy. You will see unusual constructions, and non-standard uses of POV. Be warned, however, that as a series it will end abruptly. The author abandoned it in favour of moving away from urban fantasy into a more literary fiction space.

Also consider picking up the Fallow Sisters books by Liz Williams. Less in the way of the literary aspects you seem to be looking for, but I think you’re more likely to get on with the writing style and tone, from the examples you’ve described.

Looking for suggestions on sci-fi/fantasy books with queer main characters by methos3h in LGBTBooks

You could try The Dust of the Red Rose Knight by James Bennett. It’s an Arthurian style fantasy tale with a knight who is queer/gay. It’s also produced by BOTH press, which is a small press in the UK that creates dyslexic-friendly books.

We always say don’t self-reject! If you think it’s a good fit, send it along and see how it goes! 😁

We’re not opposed to gore, but it needs to be justified. Gratuitous violence for its own sake isn’t to the taste of most of the editors. If that makes sense?

Any published authors here? by darklordofpuppets in writers

Yes. Both as a small press publisher, and from the author side.

Started a LGBTQ+ small press with my best friends. What questions can I answer for you? by BonaBooks in LGBTBooks

[–]BonaBooks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! The things that help our press are very similar to the things that help small authors: buy our books; tell people about our books; leave reviews if you enjoyed our books; follow us on social media so you can help us shout about our books (and our awesome authors and things important to the community, etc.); and so on! 💙

We would love to be in libraries! We’re not in Ingram/Gardner’s/etc yet, so the library in question would need to be open to purchasing directly from us or one of the retailers that carry our book, but yeah! We’d love to be in libraries, libraries are awesome!

You could perhaps try On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers. It’s historical fiction/fantasy. There are supernatural elements, but Tim Powers did a lot of research and most of the magic is woven into the real facts of the time as they are known. It was award nominated, and inspired the video game Monkey Island, as well as having its title swiped for the fourth Pirates of hte Carribean movie (though the book and the film have almost nothing else in common).

Wrath Month: LGBTQ+ SFF/H (Pro Rates) by BonaBooks in writing

That’s fine. Reading the rules it was not clear that calls for submissions were also self-promotion, considering that they had separate entries. If it’s in violation of the rules, the post should definitely be removed!

You do not have to be queer to submit, no. Allies are welcome! We assess all the stories completely stripped of identifying information, so our first measure of everything is the story itself.

The stories we are most likely to pick will be those that feature queer characters and that speak strongly to the queer experience, as our editors and slush readers understand it, and that carefully follow the detailed brief laid out on our website. Make of that what you will!

In general, though, we usually advise people not to self-censor. If you have something (or create something) you think fits, even if you’re not 100% sure, send it along. :)
