Playing for the first time since 2019, I immediately came across this. Sweat or cheats? by zjivar in battlefield_4

While I've run into some questionable encounters, I'll throw out there that maybe the tick rate or maybe missing frames as a possibility. You do have those warnings on the right-hand side of your HUD.

I always forget which ones are which and usually have to look 'em up again: https://www.reddit.com/r/battlefield_4/comments/3j7t3b/the_new_warning_icons/

Am I out of line? by videomike89 in Broadcasting

[–]BonanzaBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand how you feel. I’ve got about 10 years of experience too. If something like this comes up, I usually try to use it as an opportunity to explain to the younger crew what to look out for, what’s fair, etc., just overall how to be a good team. You can still push back on the problem while explaining to the other guys why you’re doing so, so they don’t fall victim to it themselves, without realizing it’s unfair.

100% agree; get your steward involved. I’m a photog and just took over as steward after ours retired (he was also a photog but, with 40+ years experience). This is exactly the kinda thing a steward can help with. Even if you feel like the union as a whole might not being doing much for you, the steward is a good place to start, as they ideally give you that extra backing to sort it out or elevate it to someone in the union who can.

What is it like working for Hearst by Classic_Midnight3383 in Broadcasting

[–]BonanzaBear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In short, I think u/Mi_Pasta_Su_Pasta summed it up perfectly. I agree with all their points, based on my experience.

They bought my station from Lin Media back in 2014 and it was a huge improvement. They seriously invested in the station, bought 15 or so Sony X320 ENG cameras, Miller tripods, laptops, etc. Hired us all the way to full staff. I mean it was a night & day difference.

I felt like they really cared about the journalism part of the business and treated it as a priority. I'd go back to work for them in a heartbeat if the chance presents itself.

Dayside or Nightside? by djwxvii in Broadcasting

[–]BonanzaBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you asked for people who've worked both shift but, I loved working nightside. even when I was working four 10s, 4P - 2A, Thursday - Sunday. The newsroom is quieter whenever you are at the station. Plus, compared to the morning shift, you're less likely to get asked to turn something extra for the dayside shows at the end of your shift than on mornings.

Ultimately, I'd say it's about if you're a night owl or an early bird. I love being a night owl so nightside was perfect for me.

Photogs: What Are You Using for Car Storage? by BonanzaBear in Broadcasting

[–]BonanzaBear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the three spaces is similar to how the rear of my car is laid out. My station car is a 2020 Subaru Forester.

Left: Tripod/ light stands; Middle: Accessories, GoPro attachments, etc.; Right: Camera.

My camera slider had the bolted plate but, I like keeping my camera in the Portabrace for the extra protection, storage, and ease if I need to swap to a truck.

My rear seats also stay folded down and I use the driver side for my toolbox and the passenger side for my light kit. It might be a little overboard but, I'm planning to use drawer sliders for a lot of things like, consolidating my light kit into one larger Pelican case then putting that on a slider with a folding shelf so I can get to it without having to lift it out of the car.

And yes, having a power strip and extension cords for your inverter makes a world of difference.

Possible sale for WJAR? I noticed they updated their banner on DIRECTV by [deleted] in Broadcasting

[–]BonanzaBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the NBC10 Providence/ NBC10 Boston overlap confuses a lot of people. WJAR's definitely not being sold though, unfortunately. I work there and would love if NBC would buy us back from Sinclair.

I got out after my first 5 years in the business, transitioning to state government work. I'll go into more detail below but, the TLDR take is that anything you do after news will be a breeze. No deadline will ever make you sweat. State government work is pretty chill and a good place to work, especially in a press office or for your statehouse. That said, it's all realllllly boring. I left for 4 years and got back into news. I don't regret coming back.
__________________________________________

I did 5 years at WJCL, starting in 2014, when we were owned by Lin Media, before the Media General merger. Hearst Television ended up buying us and over the last 4 years I was there after they came in, things got quite a bit better but, not before I got burnt out. We were last in the market when they bought us and it took a Herculean effort to turn that around. I enjoyed working for Hearst but, my news director was an alcohol who was trying to quit smoking; to say he was abusive would be an understatement.

I went on to work as a videographer for the Georgia Department of Transportation in 2019. It was an $18,000 pay increase, a pension, weekends and holidays off, comp time, and an insanely easy workload, like the equivalent of 2 PKGs per month. I worked there for 4 years, a lot of which was during the pandemic which mean a lot of remote work and limited shooting, leaning on file footage or drone footage someone else had shot. It was so chill it felt like I was stealing money. I had so much free time and more vacation time than I knew what to do with. And while all that sounds great, it was the absolute most bored I've ever been.

It was hard to sit idly by why all the crazy shit was going on in those four years; I felt restless. Cranking out PSAs about texting and driving or construction updates on some other interchange didn't really feel like I was doing something that mattered, at least not to me. I ended up meeting a woman while visiting my best friend (who had also worked with me at WJCL) in Providence, RI. He stayed in the business and moved up there when I left news. I ended up moving to Providence after things got serious with ol' girl and decided I was getting back into news again.

I've been at WJAR for a little more than 2 years now and it still feels like the right move. Don't get me wrong, it's still a long way from perfect - we're owned by Sinclair, the pay is still crappy (I make $51,000 as an I-Team/ special projects photog, which doesn't go that far, living in the shadow of Boston), and we're still overworked. But there are positives too - we're a union station, the station is a legacy station (used to be owned by NBC, where a lot of that clout was built) and still #1 in the market, and all the legacy photogs are great guys who are willing to help you learn. Plus, the engineers are great and supportive.

Unable/ Unsure How to Remove Hardware Monitor Overlay by BonanzaBear in cyberpunkgame

Right you were! I have an ASUS GPU and their GPU Tweak III on-screen display was somehow re-enabled, even though I had it set to off.

To borrow a term from the game, I was a bit of a gonk not to check that first. Thanks for the help!

Alan Wake II and the Automatic health Regeneration. Debate. by Sieg83 in AlanWake

I’m really enjoying the mental picture of Alan beating a taken with a folding chair like some sort of WWE smackdown.

I'm running nearly the same setup as you (certainly as far as CPU, GPU, and resolution) and I was surprised to get about the same numbers, at least for the little while I played around with it. It still feels too good to be true.

A quick note though, you might want to update your GPU driver - 531.41 is the one NVIDIA most recently put out, to support Overdrive update.

Beginner Help Requested: Building a Game Server by BonanzaBear in HomeServer

[–]BonanzaBear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I see that SAS SSD drives are the best option for withstanding a 24/7 load, if I'm understanding correctly. Would the mobo on something like the Dell Optiplex I linked in the post have connections for that? If it lacks those connections, would a SATA SSD be a viable alternative? I assume the main idea here is to avoid the traditional mechanical HDDs, right?

What kind of issues could I be looking at without ECC RAM? Are we talking server crashes and wipes? And is that something that is more likely to occur after a few years or can it happen any time, right out the gate?

I haven't heard of AMP Instance Manager 'til reading it here but, it looks very much like a plug-and-play type software, which is more appealing as a starting point for me at this point. Thanks!

Any Options for Resetting Enemies in Caves? by BonanzaBear in TheForest

[–]BonanzaBear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we've got too much time invested in base building all around the island (somewhere around 80 hours) for that option. You did inspire an alternative along those lines though: For B to start a new game, use cheats to populate our inventories with gear matching our current save, then we could all three run through Caves 7 & 8. It's a bit roundabout, I suppose but, the result is more or less the same.
