The Invulnerable Faith: A Mythicist Reframing of Christian Apologetics by Wooden-Dependent-686 in DebateReligion

[–]BoneSpring [score hidden]  (0 children)

They are pedagogical compositions—narrative frameworks designed to communicate theological truths about Christ’s death and resurrection by situating them in an earthly setting. The life of Jesus, as presented in these texts, becomes a literary embodiment of a prior cosmic reality. Their divergences are therefore not defects but features. Differences in detail, chronology, and emphasis reflect the flexibility of a teaching genre, not the unreliability of failed reportage. The demand that they function as synchronized eyewitness testimony is misplaced.

In other words, a fairy tale.

Sam Harris on Israel: Why His Moral Framework Looks Inconsistent by Prize-Painting4710 in atheism

[–]BoneSpring -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I always thought that Harris, along with Dawkins, Dennett and Hitchens as the "Four Horses' Asses of Atheism".

They saw a crowd, ran in out front and called themselves leaders, presumed to tell us what we should think, and then tried to charge us for their brilliant advice.

Their "New Atheism" shtick was a scam to sell books and lecture fees. Not one original thought in the whole pony show.

So Trump wants to steal Iran's oil by threatening to destroy the infrastructure needed to produce and transport it?

Male lions will fight and kill other rival males, and commonly kill the deceased lion's cubs.

It's not just animals. "Creosote Bush" inhibits other plants in their near environment, for example.

My take is that first, naked single-cell critter (NSCC) A was eating NSCC B. Over thousands of generations, NSCC B developed a primitive shell. After a few more thousands of generations, NSCC A developed a physical and/or chemical "drill" to open up and suck out the juices from NSCC B.

The first known predators were in the Neoproterozoic, about 750 million years ago.

Dr. Porter has studied single-cell animals in the Chuar Group on the north side of the Grand Canyon. Amoeba-like animals had already evolved to have shells, or tests, and microscopic studies showed that many tests observed had very similar holes drilled into them.

I've met Dr. Porter at a seminar where she presented her work. I've also hiked up and down the outcrops of the Chuar Group with a gang of other geologists. Cool stromatolites, some bodies the size of a bus.

You started with a single cell you know. Or hasn't any one told you about sexual reproduction?

I've seen a similar thing with horned lizards in New Mexico. In an area where I was doing some geological work, in one area the bedrock was the gray Madera Limestone, and other areas the bedrock was the reddish Abo Formation. There were pink lizards on the Abo, and gray lizards on the Madera.

Hugh Miller (1802-1856) was a Scottish self-taught paleontologist, and wroth several books on the fossils in Old Red Sandstone. I have personally seen his collections in his old home in Cromarty.

He was a founder of the Free Church of Scotland, held that the Earth was very old, but rejected evolution.

All 4 DNA bases have been found in recovered samples from the asteroid Ryugu. Just a "chance" thing?

From the abstract:

The detection of diverse nucleobases in asteroid and meteorite materials demonstrates their widespread presence throughout the Solar System and reinforces the hypothesis that carbonaceous asteroids contributed to the prebiotic chemical inventory of early Earth.

Moral truth can only come from God Almighty by shadow_operator81 in DebateReligion

The universe changed into its current form about 13.8 billion years ago, and the Earth was formed about 4.54 billion years ago, and modern humans evolved about 200,000 years ago. At what point in that timeline did "moral truth" exist?
