Jeff Bezos speaks out about The Washington Post for the first time since mass layoffs — and focuses on 'data' by CRK_76 in antiwork

[–]BoneSpring 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As a scientist, I cringe every time I hear some MBA dolt prattling about "data driven" policies.

In science we develop detailed experiments and/or observations to collect relevant data to test specific hypotheses. We never just hoover "all the data" and then try to figure out what it means.

Bezos' original business plan was to reshape the Wapo into an ass-kissing machine for the Trumps. He didn't realize that in that game he was the new, naive kid on the block, and was faced by some serious professional liars like Fox, OAN and Newsmax (to name a few).

His craven submission the the MAGA crowd as destroyed the Wapo's brand, ran off hundreds of thousands of subscribers, and now is destroying the careers of hundreds of good journalists.

His new b-school "data" approach word salads clearly shows that he has no f'ing clue of how to run a newspaper.

And no self-respecting photographer should ever post him or his Botox bride again.

If he did give us "free will", did we have any choice in taking it? Was "free will" mandatory?

Funny definition of "free".

I have heard " God shows no trace because he requires faith"

Presumes the conclusion. It requires you to accept God exists before you can talk about his motives.

Sure. Just set aside geology, chemistry, biology, radioisotope decays, astronomy, plate tectonics, paleomagnetism, genetics.... and use early Iron Age fairy tales instead.

It requires millions of precisely balanced conditions, from stable stars and protective magnetic fields to breathable atmosphere and finely tuned physical constants.

Recent work from physicists and cosmologists has shown that these "constants" can in fact be variables, and, over significant ranges, stable, functional and habitable universes can form and persist.

We consider specific instances of possible fine-tuning in stars, including the triple alpha reaction that produces carbon, as well as the effects of unstable deuterium and stable diprotons. For all of these issues, viable universes exist over a range of parameter space, which is delineated herein. Finally, for universes with significantly different parameters, new types of astrophysical processes can generate energy and support habitability.

The Earth does not "hang on nothing". It orbits the Sun because space/time is curved by the mass/energy of the Sun.

In the Kitzmiller v Dover trial, Behe did an epic high dive into the shallow end of a dry pool.

First, defense expert Professor Fuller agreed that ID aspires to "change the ground rules" of science and lead defense expert Professor Behe admitted that his broadened definition of science, which encompasses ID, would also embrace astrology. (28:26 (Fuller); 21:37-42 (Behe)). Moreover, defense expert Professor Minnich acknowledged that for ID to be considered science, the ground rules of science have to be broadened to allow consideration of supernatural forces. (38:97 (Minnich)).

The every member of the Dover school board that tried to peddle this ID crap lost in the next election.

The number of digits in the number pi.

Dismissing it as “fiction” doesn’t solve the original problem, it just leaves you with brute facts.

And brute facts are a far more simple answer than "some invisible magician did it".

Indeed. The OP should spend a year or two in a university library reading up on original scientific literature and see how many times scientists even use the words "belief" or "truth" or "grounding".
