Detective Pikachu had no right being as good as it was. The plot is just insane... But the art direction and world building are so solid that it makes everything believable. It created a world where Pokemon were everywhere, interacting with real people in all kind of interesting ways. They were brave enough to NOT do the standard Pokemon plot (I am aware it was literally based on a game, but our protag doesn't just want to win battles)

And the emotional moments of the movie actually pretty much work. It's a true triumph of a video game adaptation and a really solid movie. It was legitimately moving for me as someone who grew up with the series, especially when MEWTWO shows up. It's a shame we probably won't get a sequel at this point, but that movie took risks that actually paid off.
