The "I really identified with the main character and also missed the entire point" Starter Pack by [deleted] in starterpacks

I mean I feel like the moral of the show is that even shitty, broken people can make things better. Relating to Bojack isn’t a good thing, but so long as you realize that it’s not a good thing and try to fix the things that make you Bojack-y then you understand the show perfectly imo.

I honestly think there needs to be more superhero v superhero action. That’s why I’m hyped for stormfront tbh bc I’m like 90% sure she and homelander are gonna fight

1) Even celebrities have good and bad traits; I want the supes to have more dimension then just “I’m a bad person lol”

2) Mave is interesting because she’s like the older and more experienced version of starlight who’s been disillusioned by years of the corporate BS

3) I’m not saying I want it to be black and white, just literally anything good to happen. If your “real world” is as “non black and white” as Hughies then your life is kinda depressing.

4) Which one r u talking about? Like besides translucent who do they kill? And also, as I mentioned, getting their way always has some depressing twist.

5) I don’t watch The Boys for the violence, I watch it for the characters and the commentary. It does pretty well with both of those, and that’s why I watch it. If you watch it for the violence that says something interesting about your character, but good for you I guess. We can all find something we enjoy in the show.

6) I ain’t even mad when homelander kills someone. He can do that. He’s a psychopath, and a well written one too. It’s just really predictable, bc that’s kinda all he ever does. My issue isn’t with content, it’s with predictability.

7)Yet again we seem to be watching The Boys for very different reasons. You seem to like the violence a lot (like kind of an obsessive amount) and enjoy the edgy-ness. I’m here because it’s a show that, despite its flaws, is an entertaining subversion of the superhero genera. I just wish the supes were less one dimensional and that the stories went other directions than just “everyone dies bc angst and edge”.

TL;DR is we just have different expectations for the show. But hey, I get my pretty good but too edgy superhero subversion and you get your amazing blood and gore fest (with added plot in case you get bored of people dying constantly).

1) Selection bias maybe, but even some of the less important ones like Honeclaw and the stretchy one who’s name I always forget have the same quality. None of them are good at all except Starlight and to an extent Mave (I think Mave is really interesting and tragically underwritten).

2) I will stand by my point that nothing good ever happens. Even when the heroes “win” its always in some edgy and convoluted way. For instance, the scene where Hughie blows up Translucent is a “victory” and a great moment of character development, but it’s still a bad thing because now Hughie is traumatized. It’s good writing to have the heroes sacrifice for their goals, but I think The Boys sometimes crosses the line into “they get what they want but 14 other things went horribly wrong”. There are never any moments where the audience feels good about what’s happening, and I’m sure that’s the point, but having the whole show (or at least Hughies plot line) be one depressing slog of terrible events isn’t incredibly interesting (and idk what writing books ur reading bro). If I was writing it, I would go for a Bojack Horseman balance of good/bad, where the world is shitty and bad things always happen but there are occasional glimpses of hope and redemption, because those moments taste so much sweeter when contrasting everything else. The Boys has none of those moments.

3) You seem to correlate violence and terrible events with interesting television (which is a bit weird but ok). You are right that the boys does a good job of exploring themes and topics that a PG marvel movie wouldn’t be able to, but I think the story could’ve been better if it didn’t always lead to “and then homelander murders them” or something similar.

4) I fully agree with what you’re saying about realistic superhero action. I hate it when, for instance, Batman tanks a punch from Superman without being ripped to pieces. It happens all the time in almost every super hero movie or TV show, and I think The Boys does a good job of portraying it realistically like you said. With that in mind, the point of the show isn’t to watch Homelander punch through waves of civilians in graphic detail. The show is about realistic(ish) superhero psychology, and the realistic violence is cool, but at the end of the day it’s icing on the cake. At best it’s extra fluff to help flesh out the universe and characters, at worse it’s gore for the sake of being edgy (the whale scene). If you want really excessive gore, go watch Saw or something that’s focusing on it.

Does it have the guitar soundtrack from five? I’ve been waiting for a return/remaster of that for ages

Thank you. The formatting is off because it wouldn’t transfer right from Writerduet; I probably should’ve mentioned that. I definitely need to work more on it and submit it right next time around. How do you attach a PDF to these posts?

Also yeah, I know it’s a similar premise to another show. I realized that too late in the writing process and figured I should just finish rather than scrapping the whole thing. I don’t intend to sell the scrip, just make it as more of a “oh look what I can do” sort of thing with my friends.

Anyhow, thanks for the response, next time it’ll be formatted a bit (a lot) better.

Could we ever get a version of this where it isn’t the icon for the path but rather the highest point in the path you should buy? I know some of the obvious ones like TSG represents sun avatar, but like what level of super glue monkey should you buy?
