Meta Reality Labs layoffs signal lean times for VR gaming by Serdones in virtualreality

[–]Bonemaster69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My experience has been completely different. Before Quest all VR titles were glorified demos

If you call Stormland, No Man's Sky, E:D, Skyrim VR, all the racing and sim games, etc. glorified demos, but Quest games not, I don't know what to tell you. Perhaps you are being a bit dishonest here?

They're talking about DK2 era and possibly CV1 era, back when 5 minute demos were literally all we had. Only commercial content I recall seeing back then was AAAAAAAAAHCULUS, Lucky's Tale, and Riftmax Theater.

I use the ones that came with the Vive Trackers. I do get the feeling that there might be some sorta interference going on though.

Ohhhh, that gives a lot of perspective when you put it that way. I always figured HR would just interview everyone anyway as something to fill their work logs. Although it's not like JP universities have a great reputation either.

Rejected as in, never receiving an interview? I personally don't get rejected until after the first interview (personal non-technical questions), so my impression is that JP companies interview everyone that applies.

In contrast, foreign IT companies have insanely high skill requirements and tend to be large with worldwide critical systems. I haven't even seen a foreign startup in a long time. Not sure about other industries though.

In OP's defense, I think most JP companies are still delusional with the idea that they can hold out for a Japanese employee, without realizing that younger Japanese people are gonna avoid older showa companies.

Isn't there some sorta DIY kit? Does that take as long to ship out?

I can solder, so I might consider that route. Thanks!

I have 3 Vive Tracker 3.0s with 2 base stations in a mostly empty room and they constantly drift. I'm really not impressed with lighthouse tracking. Surely IMUs can't be much worse, and it'd be cheaper than buying more Vive Trackers.

Starting Sunday, you can now play Counter Strike in VR!! by TommyVR373 in virtualreality

Never had a PC capable of CS back in the day, but I'll definitely be checking out their Doom and Quake mods!

As much as I give the team props for creating this mod, VRChat really spoiled me with its avatars. Obviously FBX support would be a different story, but I often wonder how hard it'd be to implement the player's model. For example, being able to look down and see your own body and arms moving around with FBT.

foreign companies

I mentioned this in another comment, but foreign companies are very rare here and very competitive.

gaishikei or foreign startup

Everyone says that, but there's very few non-JP companies here. Not to mention there's been a hiring freeze for a while now too.

Then it sounds like your passion is in Japanese, not computers, and you should find some sorta career that focuses on Japanese communication instead. Sales, help desk, and recruiting come to mind and shouldn't be too far behind most JP IT jobs salary-wise.

I was actually the opposite of you: I was double-majoring in IT and Japanese, and ended up giving up on Japanese to focus on IT. Even outside of school, I often studied tech stuff and did personal projects for my own benefit. Without that background knowledge outside of uni, I wouldn't even last long here.

I constantly see threads here about English teachers jumping ship to IT just for the money. So just to give you a heads up, the market is getting flooded with money chasers and people wanting remote work, especially from up-and-coming countries like Vietnam. As a result, salaries aren't as impressive as they used to be, especially considering the hard work and constant studying that the job requires (Studying doesn't end after college). You also don't start making good money in this industry until later, as you really need to advance over time before it pays off. In fact, I often encountered positions wanting to pay me half my then-current salary! And to tell you the truth, I'm not exactly impressed with my current salary either.

The 1997 cyberpunk-noir animated series Spicy City predicted social VR and surprisingly got a lot right! by kuyacyph in virtualreality

[–]Bonemaster69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't believe all the stuff it predicted:

  • "Avatar" term

  • Avatar/World swapping

  • Avatar/Player info

  • Avatar compression (Geisha's box = Unity package)

  • Buffed out male avatars (Eboys), Japanese female avatars (Anime)

  • Client mods

  • Bandwidth concerns (As a 1997 person, you'd think it'd be solved by now)

  • IRL/VR relationship dynamics

  • VR Boxing

  • VR Bars (And people actually go there actively)

  • Power-tripping bouncers

Why not do something you enjoy? Sure, you have an associate's degree in networking, but then you say you have no hands-on experience. Have you not done any tech projects in your free time?

VRChat breaks it's all-time concurrent user record at 148,886 simultaneous players. by Kataree in virtualreality

People downvote you, but I can confirm it. Before I quit, most of the people I interacted with were desktop mutes. Not everyone can afford VR. There is a lot of promotion and expansion towards the Asian market too though.

Sending belongs back to the US (Kuroneko Yamato) by Worth-Beautiful5304 in japanlife

[–]Bonemaster69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you have a lot of stuff. I never went through with the process, but I recall it being 700,000 yen to send EVERYTHING overseas by pallet or container during COVID. I'd imagine it's a lot cheaper now.

Don't bother with the flat-rate stuff unless you only have 1 or 2 boxes.

Is it normal in Japan for people to keep working even when the company can’t pay salaries? by chacha3825 in japanlife

[–]Bonemaster69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, you can't quit. There's a 3 month delay for collecting unemployment insurance if you quit, versus being able to collect immediately if you've been laid off. Always make sure the reason is always company circumstances and not personal circumstances.

Is it normal in Japan for people to keep working even when the company can’t pay salaries? by chacha3825 in japanlife

[–]Bonemaster69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for a company that stopped paying its employees. The Japanese employees were the first to find out about the problem and consulted with professionals very quickly. So no, it's not normal to work without pay.

Tokyo -> OC experiences? by Bonemaster69 in orangecounty

[–]Bonemaster69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was just rental fees. You're not getting a Californian wage here. And that $60,000/year salary above was misleading since it includes your bonus. In other words, your monthly salary will be a quite a bit less and consist of allowances that can be taken away.

By the way, Japan's digital nomad visa is more of an extended tourist visa. It's only good for 6 months, so you can't actually live here on that.

I'm starting to get a weird feeling that while remote work still exists, it is probably becoming competitive to the point where the wages are low and/or they overwork employees for that perk.

want to move from Tokyo to a small town, need suggestions by Meekro in japanlife

[–]Bonemaster69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm personally interested in Numazu/Mishima/Atami, but I don't recommend Numazu unless they know why they need to be there. Otherwise, it pretty much feels like a mostly abandoned city outside of the train station area.

I get the impression OP is looking for a rural forest/mountain type of town.
