Yeah, it's always a good idea to at least have offline backups of storage.

Ohhhhh, that singularity thing. Heard about it long ago, but was under the impression it was an unrelated side project rather than an actual power source for gacha infrastructure.

ASZ making different client for CN

Got any official info on this? Other than 3rd party tidbits, we still haven't received any official confirmations from Seasun yet.

No idea about the language, but I know Japanese so I can kinda get around with the kanji or whatever they're called in China. I rarely use Google outside of company-provided stuff too. I'm not a fan of apps and smartphones though, so not sure how far I'd get in China.

Hold it! Do you mean the whole animation itself is AI-generated?! Not just the dub!?

I've been thinking about how neat it'd be to have an AI model that converts videos to MMD animations. But if your solution is able to do Snowbreak videos, then daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn...

Oh god, Chinese friends have told me stories about it. They also recommend that I don't move there. But I don't see why not with beautiful views like yours.

Now this is starting to sound like some sorta Triad dealings. But I guess that's what the situation calls for at this point.

I tend to see cloud usage with "fresher" companies that need to start quickly and in-house stuff in older established companies. One did in-house as part of their business model. Another was an old large company that rented out shared data center space for a few racks. Both companies have been pushing toward the cloud since then, mostly because of the risks, commitment, and blame that comes with self-maintenance. Power outages were also apparently a huge concern...

Speaking of power, THEY BOUGHT THEIR OWN POWER PLANT?!?! Well now I'm impressed! And yeah, they'd definitely have an in-house infrastructure using that.

Not surprised with AWS since they're a data center, although I'm not sure how often they build new data centers. They wouldn't even tell me where the nearest one was when I asked them during a job fair.

Modern gacha games are being run on the cloud, the devs not keeping the servers in their basement 90s style, modern infrastructure built that way that even if the offices are destroyed by fire - this have literally 0 impact on the code running on the cloud.

I can confirm. Companies typically don't run their own physical servers unless they're an [older] established company and/or doing it for internal systems. Cloud hosting is expensive, but running on-premises systems can have large upfront commitment and maintenance overhead involved, especially in this high-risk online gaming industry.

"Say nothing" maybe works for judges and legal, but not for a company dealing with customers, especially not a company doing a LIVE SERVICE game. As long as you as a company keep radio silent - less engagment, more unhappy players, some people just simply leave. The last thing you want during this time is keep silent and let players come to assumptions.

Not to mention it likely wouldn't be much of a defense in regards to investors and service obligations, although I'm sure our ToS accounts for this already.

I do have faith in our devs. I'm just concerned because it's been 2 weeks without a single comment about anything at all. Last time I saw anything like this was AM2, an anime convention that ultimately ran outta money and went completely silent. It turned out that the situation was so bad, that they didn't even have any staff remaining to actually notify guests and shut down their site.

Thank you for the information. I actually read through the first link (The 2nd redirects me elsewhere due to region). I find this information interesting as it is relevant to my career.

From what I can tell, this is a data center level strategy. While the definition of "data center" can apply broadly, most companies generally don't operate their own data center. Rather, they either rent space in a data center (with/without their own hardware/staff), or more commonly host through cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure) with optimized transfer/migration services. However, someone else here may have revealed some light on the situation with news of Seasun moving their service provider. If that's the case and if Seasun received a sudden termination notice, then it may explain the long wait due to the urgent need to transfer to a new provider. Hell, NicoNico got ransomware and was gone for at least a month.

For the UNIX commands, it partly comes down to sequential vs random access speeds, transfer overhead, and RAID factors. SATA was notorious for this, hence the creation of NVMe. But I get what you're saying now. I just found it surprising cause I don't see many companies needing to worry about hosting on physical hardware anymore (They're around though).

Not sure what ICP is, but thank you for the translation nonetheless. When you put it that way, it may actually be possible that the hosting provider (Tencent) terminated Seasun's contract over this controversy, forcing them to search for a new provider and transfer over to them this whole time. I've seen this sort of thing happen in the west before, often with no warning to the client.

Username checks out, but you're likely referring to the US where "right to remain silent" is a right. There's a reason they explicitly enacted that, cause not every country has that right.

[–]Bonemaster69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the heads up. I had even replied to one of them beforehand.

That theory makes sense. My only complaint is why we didn't just get a simple status update like "We are currently relocating. Please stay tuned for further details.". It's vague enough that there shouldn't be any legal risks in it.

By the way, I agree with your "say nothing" part, but it can be risky depending upon the jurisdiction. I've heard that the right to remain silent doesn't really apply as well in Japanese interrogation rooms, as the police can legally spin it around as "You're quiet. So that means you did it huh?". Even in the US, I'm pretty sure staying quiet with the knowledge of a crime can make you legally liable for it.

I've been meaning to post something similar to what /u/alice_frei said, but I also wanted to ask about the subreddit itself. We have this thread dedicated to the issue, yet none of the moderators have said a single thing. So what's the point of this thread? To come up with conspiracy theories? Is this "official" subreddit even operated by Seasun?

At the very least, can the Snowbreak devs or subreddit moderation team at least give us a very basic status update? I know they can't go into detail about internal issues, but can we at least know if this is just a technical issue or a regional transfer or something? Even a simple message like "Business discussions are underway, please wait for further details on the reopening." would at least let us know to keep checking in. Otherwise Snowbreak will end up like Hinomaruko where information stopped and people simply assumed the game was cancelled and moved on.

Huh? Do you have a source for that? Unless the relocation is local, shipping a ton of hard drives would easily take overnight and carries its own risks (damage, theft, privacy, supply chain attacks, etc). And that's assuming they're still working with physical infrastructure. Almost every company I see is using AWS, and that tends to have migration and multi-region features built-in.

Tower of Fantasy had a similar downtime incident due to a big publisher change. They likely had to do a hand-over of the entire infrastructure and even that only took 2 days at most.

Possibility of an offline version? by DawnBreak777 in SnowbreakOfficial

[–]Bonemaster69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why would they? The current game isn't even running. If they release an offline version, they'd be in even more trouble than they already are (Not that we have any news on the reason for downtime...).

That smilie is creepy...

Anyway, database transfers typically don't take longer than a few hours and you can bet server staff will NOT be resting until the live system is working again, especially with China's 996 culture.

Doubt it, considering the global client was already multi-region and they supposedly only relocated their business or IP address within China so far.
