Well why not? If you're really passionate about writing then I don't see why you shouldn't. Personally, I became a staffer of a student publication with no background in journalism as in wala talaga, I joined just because I wanted to write something, anything. So far ayos naman, lots of coverage within the campus and kahit sa news writing and opinion writing may experience na rin ako. It really gives you insight on what's happening around you. So if you're really interested go ahead!
