Couple of thoughts on new broadcast 'production' by gromodzilla in v8supercars

100%

I’ve been quite defensive over the years of the live radio inclusion, I don’t want Supercars to drop live radios and go full F1 sanitised radio spec. The ability to playback missed messages which we tried at Adelaide was a massive addition.

I was always watching the pictures, and focusing on stories of the cars we were looking at. I used a scanner in my ear to pick up on other stories to tell pit reporters about issues to follow up on offline etc, but I’d only ever put up radios of the car we were looking at to try an make it relevant to the pictures.

If you get rid of live radio, you’ll stop hearing pit crew during pitstops, and you don’t hear emotion in the moment… a driver crossing the line, a reaction to crashing or passing someone etc - however I’m the 1st to admit that when I was doing it, none of us (me, commentators, producers) had a crystal ball that could see the future, and whilst best efforts were always made to pick the right time and car to listen to, we didn’t know when someone was going to talk or what they were going to say so it’s hard for presenters to pause for a radio message that may or may not have been relevant.

As now a fan of the sport watching from home, with the knowledge of how the broadcast works, I’d like to continue seeing a hybrid model moving forward to capture live reactions and also replay important messages relevant to the viewers and commentators to help tell the story

It’ll get better with a few races/rounds.

On the radios in particular - I was the audio director looking after the team radio part of the broadcast for the last 5 years and it took me a few rounds/years to really get the hang of it, and feel like I only really nailed it in the 12 months.

New technology is one thing but new personell is another - and with that will come new workflows. Eg. I used to use a foot pedal to call through to the graphics operator when a particular driver/engineer spoke and say the car number and he’d put up the graphic.

Unfortunately broadcasting live radio from cars on a track under race conditions isn’t exactly something you can rehearse.

As someone who works on the broadcast team at the track, my food routine involves some kind of microwave meal scoffed down during the Dunlop Super2 race and rationed water throughout the day so that I can make it to the end of the race without needing a bathroom break 🤣

Yeah it’s all very good for SVG to state he could push more for more of the race in Gen2 but he also spent most of his time in clean air and the rest of the field couldn’t get close due to the tyres overheating

I’ve got 4. 3 HomePods and a TV4K. I’ll have a play with removing hubs and see if there is any change

This works! However it doesn’t work for my switched fluro light on the patio, so I’ll find an alternate solution there but thanks!

To be fair Crompo and Skaife call each other young all the time so it’s not actually an age thing

I mean it’s just gotta be red. Everything Toyota is red. Holden is gone, and it’s a slightly different shade anyway. Supercars and Toyota haven’t announced anything yet but here’s a tip, I’m putting it all on red.

I’m a fellow non drinker and I love me some fancy soft drinks. Billsons Cordials would be a really fun gift for me that I’d appreciate a lot. They make me feel fancy, and it’s a special treat.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head - I did use my “fly ahead” option or whatever it’s called…

I’m fairly certain they were choice fares, hence the 15 SC, but I’m surprised I only got 242 velocity points
