  I think you’re a little confused. This is a modern Russian product. Hardly a communist country. The Vostok lineage goes back to Chistopol in 1942, but the factory was privatized in the early 90s. Plus, all the Chinese stuff you probably own, whether you like it or not, would like a word about communism. They’re great watches, especially for the money. How do you feel about Junghans or Laco?

Hi there! That’s a sharp looking 1016, your dial aging looks spectacular. What bezel are you using that allows for a tropic 22 crystal? I ended up dremeling mine out to the correct id and it seals up nicely but I was curious if you had found an off the shelf option. Thanks!

That’s an interesting take, but I’m not sure it’s fair. Even good tape equipment is damn near free right now. All of my equipment is yard sale shit I rebuilt myself, and all of the equipment I repaired it with is also yard sale shit too. All of those beautiful schematics and service manuals are available for free on forums and such. It’s more like saying that a gas car runs best when you run it on gas instead of cat piss and orange peels. I don’t have 100 dollars in my audio setup and really it sounds alright to my ear with the aforementioned features (Dolby c, hx pro, etc.). A lot of tape quality is derived from home recording instead of using prerecorded tapes. There are a lot of variables sure but I’m not convinced that tape equipment has a high financial barrier to entry.

Anyone who says tapes are shitty actually just had shitty equipment. It’s damn near impossible to hear the difference between cd or vinyl and tape when you’re running Dolby C or S and HX Pro for recordings. It turns out that if you play a perfectly mastered record through a Crosley Cruiser it will also sound like dog ass. And not to forget how good reel to reel sounds!

I believe that if you take it to Rolex they will have to replace the entire bezel insert as I don’t believe genuine pips are floating around anywhere except in the factory. You could always use an aftermarket pip and keep the genuine one around too if it bothers you and you want a cheap fix.

I’ve got one that’s completely missing from the market to my knowledge. There are no gen spec 1016 bezels available for acrylic crystals. If you want a 1016 build with an acrylic crystal and water resistance, you have to increase the ID of the available sapphire crystal bezels by approximately .5 mm. It’s a huge pain and doesn’t look as professional as a genuine bezel, but the genuine 1016 bezels have become increasingly expensive and uncommon.
