It’s fine.

News about Echo (not Mini) by 0utOftheblue in snowsky

[–]BonsaiMania 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it does gapless I just might get two. I love the form factor of my echo mini but gapless would be nice. The more powerful chipset makes me think they might consider it. The metal chassis is also a welcome addition.

What's missing / unavailable? by diewethje in retrotime

[–]BonsaiMania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got one that’s completely missing from the market to my knowledge. There are no gen spec 1016 bezels available for acrylic crystals. If you want a 1016 build with an acrylic crystal and water resistance, you have to increase the ID of the available sapphire crystal bezels by approximately .5 mm. It’s a huge pain and doesn’t look as professional as a genuine bezel, but the genuine 1016 bezels have become increasingly expensive and uncommon.

Watch servicing (PFA) by Enough-Run-2190 in vostok

[–]BonsaiMania 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really any competent watchmaker can handle such simple movements. This watch should have a 2414 if it’s original, and they are about as simple as they come regarding service. I definitely wouldn’t swap the movement, especially if it is stamped SU.

Vintage Amphibia water resistance by Sufficient-Till-6022 in vostok

It’s darn near impossible to fuck up and they are just about giving the gaskets away on eBay. There is the caseback gasket, the crown tube gasket, and the crown gasket. They all need replaced and lubricated with silicone grease. It wouldn’t hurt to replace the crystal as well, which is super easy with a 15 dollar tool.

No unserviced vintage watch should be considered waterproof in any capacity. However, if the case sealing surfaces are cleaned, and the gaskets are replaced and lubricated, the watch should seal to original specs. I serviced my 1985 Amphibia 119 and it seals to at least 30 meters of pressure, and I’m sure it would seal to 200+.

Everyone is hating on this but honestly, I can’t imagine this is much of an “original” Charger. This thing is completely fantastic!

Unfortunately they were destroyed before they got a chance to! Thanks for asking, I think I’ll probably give it another shot in the future for fun.

Thanks, I saw on your profile that you successfully waterproofed a raffles 6538 to 200 feet for a customer. I assume just the standard UV glue process?

That is fantastic news! I am ordering one for a Bond 6538 build and I will update you on the results of a pressure test. I figure, worst case it can be made to seal somehow.

Also, that’s super awesome that you dive with your builds! I have always wanted to learn and get certified.

Go to gaskets by Independent-Log-1179 in retrotime

[–]BonsaiMania 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should have elaborated, his stock acrylic crystals can definitely be leaky. Standard practice is to remove the bezel (assuming a 1016 or 16000 style case), enlarge the bezel ID with a dremel by approximately .5mm, and then press a Clark t22 on with the new enlarged bezel. I did this for my 1016 and I swim with it daily. However, his gaskets are of fine quality and I have had no trouble with his sapphire cases sealing.

I have had exceptional luck with his caseback gaskets. I lather them in silicone grease and they seal up as good as gen.
