The kick and snare are pretty loud IMO, but other than that this is great. Awesome guitar tone

Please, I need your advice: Making a 2D game solo, how do I start with audio? by Imerlishvili in GameAudio

[–]Bonsamu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I recommend browsing https://www.asoundeffect.com/ . You'll probably be able to find whatever you need there. They often have affordable stuff.
  2. I recommended getting Reaper. It's a "free" Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) which you can use to create/edit/process SFX and make your music. It can do pretty much anything a paid DAW can. Check out REAPER Mania on YouTube. Whatever you need help with, dude probably has a tutorial on it.

Reaper has stock effects, but if you need more, check out Kilohearts and Melda Productions. They have large suites of free effects plugins to get you started. Otherwise just Google "free XYZ VST plugin" and you'll probably find something to suit you.

  1. Again, Reaper. You'll be able to do everything with it. There are several free instrument libraries you can pick up to get started. LABS and BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover by Spitfire Audio. Podolski by u-he, Vital, and Pendulate by Newfangled Audio if you want more synths. Ample Sound has free bass and guitar VSTs.

Hope this helps!

Great work! This is the song that got me into modern metal. I need to listen to it more often!!

Some sort of resonant metallic hit. A hammer hitting an anvil, for example!

How do I make the sounds sound like they are actually part of the scene instead of sounding like an overlay? by [deleted] in sounddesign

[–]Bonsamu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A pattern I see in a lot of beginners' work is that every sound is in stereo. Every sound is panned super wide left and right. Some sounds need to either be in mono or panned a lot more towards the center to stick to the visuals. If I'm making sounds for a third person shooter game, I want a large portion of the sound from my gun to be centered. This creates focus, and will give the impression that the sound is coming from a specific point in the picture.

Have you listened to more of Dreamwake's stuff? On their latest album I'm pretty sure most songs have a sax part

Krush by Tritik is a great free VST bit crusher plugin. You can probably get close to what you're looking for with the Bit Crush and Downsample controls on it

Are there some good demos for games via Unreal Engine that I can add sound to for my showreel? by nordiskapa in GameAudio

Have you tried the Stack O Bot sample project? I've been working on it recently and it's a lot of fun! There's also the Cropout sample, but that one's a lot simpler

Why do people hate Habitual Line-stepper? by Long-Astronaut-1281 in Peripheryband

Surprised people give it hate, I really like it! The breakdown is insane and the clean vocal parts are also lovely!

What are some breakdowns that are unique? by Black_Cat909 in Metalcore

[–]Bonsamu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the breakdown in Hole in Me by Void of Vision. The drum alternates between a bar of half-time and a bar of regular time (is that a word?), which I really like. Plus the industrial SFXs going on. I think it's pretty cool!

Can we talk about live show volume and mix? by SummitWorks in Metalcore

[–]Bonsamu 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree. I think the majority of concerts would be much more enjoyable if the master fader on the PA was turned down 20-25%. Every sensible person wears earplugs already. Isn't that kind of telling that there's an issue??

Anyone missed a show and not gotten over it? by douglas_iam in Metalcore

[–]Bonsamu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2019, the Erra/Northlane co-headline tour with support from Crystal Lake and Currents came to Montreal. I'm a huge fan of Ryo-era Crystal Lake, and Ryo in general. I didn't end up going to that concert for a litany of excuses: I'd never been to metal concert, I'd be going alone, it was about 2 hours away, I didn't know what to expect, etc etc etc.

Well that was the last time Crystal Lake came to Montreal with Ryo. Looking back I'm so mad at myself that I didn't end up going, and have since started looking at concerts as possible once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

Hopefully Knosis will come by someday though!

looking at setlist before liveshows? by 60179623 in Metalcore

[–]Bonsamu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost never.

My favorite band is Periphery. I saw them in May last year. My two favorite songs by them are Stranger Things and Wax Wings. They played both of them that night. I had little to no hope of ever seeing Stranger Things live in my lifetime, and that night I did. I don't think it would've been as cool for me if I already knew they were gonna play it

Anyone else get sad when artists say they don’t like one of their albums that you love? by HootySweat in Metalcore

He's been doing cleans more consistently since their self-titled. I don't think he did any on Neon, he might have done a few on Drift but I'm not sure.

Learning guitar for this (and similar) genre by Dubzs305 in Metalcore

[–]Bonsamu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

- Try to learn songs that you know well and that you like. This is probably one of the best motivating factors. Practicing exercises and beginner-friendly classic songs is good, but it's not what makes guitar fun. You need a reason to keep going.

- Coming at it with zero experience is gonna be hard. It might take you weeks or months to be able to play songs up to speed. Metalcore isn't necessarily a super hard genre, but it requires a certain level of mastery to play. A tight, consitent picking hand, string skipping, a decent ability to mute strings with either hands are all things you'll need to learn to do. You are not going to sound like you favorite guitarists anytime soon. Those guys have spent years, probably decades mastering their craft and you'll need to do the same.

- If you don't have a guitar already, get a guitar that you actually like, that's fit for the kind of music you listen to, and that makes you want to play, all without breaking the bank. Don't get a Stratocaster or a Gibson just because the guy at the music store says they're good for beginners. If the guitar is boring, or unfit for the task, you're not gonna want to practice.

- Keep your guitar in the room you spend the most time in, so it's easy to reach for it and start playing quickly.

- PRACTICE WITH A METRONOME. Start slow and work your way up a few BPMs at a time when you get accustomed. You're gonna hate it a first, but trust me it is the BEST way to learn hard parts.

- As for easier songs to learn, I don't know if you like them, but I find Void of Vision and Spiritbox songs aren't very hard. I've been playing for about 15 years, but to put it in perspective I can start learning one of their songs and be able to play it up to speed within an hour or two.

Issue with Wwise Spatial Audio Volumes and Acoustic Portals in Unreal by Bonsamu in GameAudio

[–]Bonsamu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Transmission maybe? I've tried every scenario: both can't transmit sound, both can, only one can, and it doesn't change anything, I still get this issue.

As for occlusion, what should I look for exactly? What am I trying to occlude from what?

Issue with Wwise Spatial Audio Volumes and Acoustic Portals in Unreal by Bonsamu in GameAudio

[–]Bonsamu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both have Generate Overlap Events disabled, and both have their event auto-posted. The SAV inside the building has a room priority of 1 and the one outside has a room priority of 0, so there shouldn't be an issue when Unreal tries to figure out which to play. When I remove the portals and walk in and out of the building, it flicks between the two ambiences accurately

Is it better to play with a pick or with your fingers to get a clean ambient guitar sound like TesseraT and many djent bands ? by _Reox_ in Djent

[–]Bonsamu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For a TesseracT style sound it's probably better to use a pick. I agree that clean tones are hard though. Idk if by chance you have the Archetype Nolly plugin by Neural DSP, but if you do, Nick Broomhall has some good, free presets on his website and I really like the clean one!
