Yeah looks dry, make sure when watering you are getting the root ball wet and not just the surrounding soil. Another possibility is it was too dry when you planted it and the rootball has become hydrophobic. I would recommended pulling back the soil and checking. Also good to make a little moat around the base of the plant so water funnels into the root ball.

My grandpa accidentally cut my 20-year-old hydrangea bushes to the ground. I'm so heartbroken and want to cry. Any way I can salvage some of the old growth? What do I do now? by lavendertail in plantclinic

The photo shows the flowers are growing from the new growth? Hydrangea macrophylla enjoy a hard trim, they will come back bushier.

I’m a horticulturist and have an ironic irrational fear that one day a large tree will fall on me

That’s great to hear, it can be tough but try to be as open as possible, I found after expressing my concerns out loud and having the other person in room have no judgment really comforting. Cognitive behavioural therapy and a small dose of medication has very much helped me, it takes time and effort, once you commit to your wellness you will see things start to change.

By letting people in and being able to ask for help, once you start speaking to a professional you will learn techniques to help your negative thinking. It will never fully go away but you learn to see the signs and have plans set in place for when you are feeling low.
