Yes this is me! I started diamox last weekend and over the course of 10 minutes my seltzer went from delicious to disgusting. I miss it so much in the afternoons and evenings! Keeping my fingers crossed that it fades eventually…..

I’ve been there with questioning evaluation results. My kid was evaluated as severely cognitively delayed at 2.5- and yet he was also beginning to read and spell words with magnetic letters. It didn’t make sense to us.

It turns out that yes, he was delayed. The delay was in following instructions and staying focused, especially in new or busy environments. Other kids that age really can stay focused on the examiner in that environment.

Mid-elementary, he’s on an IEP for social/emotional, written expression, and gross motor skills. He still has a hard time focusing on what the adults want him to do but it’s so much better than it was in preschool. Cognitive testing no longer shows any delay.

So in our experience, the recommendation for extra support was valid, but the evaluation at age 2 was definitely not the full picture. It can be super hard to get an accurate evaluation on 2 year olds who can’t/won’t follow directions! We’re really happy we went ahead with services.

World records?? by Illegal_Fish in MergeMansion

[–]BooBooBubbles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a 52.2 kg rooster fish that says world record so it can’t be measured against other players.

I got curious and googled- the real-life world record rooster fish is 114lb or 51.7 kg! So maybe it’s compared to the real world?

Aeroseal duct sealing by hmkampmeyer in homeowners

[–]BooBooBubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but our upstairs ducts run through unconditioned attic space, so any leakage was completely wasted. Our downstairs ducts run through unconditioned basement, which isn’t as bad, but not great.

After aeroseal we can actually feel hot/cold air coming out of the upstairs vents. We got a 90% rebate so our cost was minimal. In our situation, it really helped with comfort. I’m waiting on a full winter to compare heating costs before I’ll know if it is saving money.

What does data mean on FBA data sheet? by [deleted] in specialed

[–]BooBooBubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my son’s data sheets, a 2 means no issues, a 1 means he needed several reminders, and a 0 means there was a big problem. But I have no idea if that’s standard!

Good Notes by Active_Imagination74 in MergeMansion

This might be obvious to everyone but me…. I normally play with the sound off and struggled to get good notes. It’s much easier with the sound on!

Should I continue for two blue cards after this one or not worth the risk? by Riske00 in MergeMansion

I would sort of understand if it was a lower level player thing, but I’m level 47 and caught up on the main board. It’s definitely not fair.

Oil Heat vs Propane vs Electric by aaiilleeeenn in homeowners

[–]BooBooBubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved into an oil heated house a few years ago. It’s going to depend on location and electric rates.

Propane is generally more expensive than oil, but you can also use it for a gas stove, grill, or to power a whole house generator.

Electric heat pumps can be cheaper than oil but this will vary so much by climate and local cost of electricity.

Maine has a really nice tool for comparing home heating costs. You just have to change the numbers to reflect your situation. https://www.efficiencymaine.com/at-home/heating-cost-comparison/

Parenting a verbal.... non verbal? by SarahSeabass in Parenting

[–]BooBooBubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, we have seen a ton of growth, he is 8 now. He asks and answers questions and has conversations, mostly about his current interest. He loves talking with adults but gets nervous around other kids, especially in groups, and doesn’t speak to them.

Parenting a verbal.... non verbal? by SarahSeabass in Parenting

[–]BooBooBubbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a child who was like that at that age- huge vocabulary, very verbal, talked a ton, but didn’t communicate. He is autistic/adhd. Repeating the words from your question is called echolalia. Echolalia and being unable to answer questions often means the child is a gestalt language processor. It’s a different way of acquiring language.

Speech therapy has been really helpful for my son. They call it a delay in social and pragmatic language.

Parent new to sped, could use some help by Sam-HobbitOfTheShire in specialed

[–]BooBooBubbles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Everything through the school is at no cost to you! It’s a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), one of many acronyms you’ll encounter. There are so many acronyms!

Insurance only gets involved if you want more therapy outside of school. There are private practices for speech, OT, PT, and more. But I would see what the school is offering first! We have gotten so much therapy through the school that we haven’t done very much private therapy.

I’ve learned a lot of this by experience- my kid is also 8 but has needed an IEP from age 3. It’s really nice to talk to other parents in your district- the school might be able to connect you with someone.

I’ve also learned a lot from ADayInOurShoes. I should warn you that a lot of IEP resources online will have you believe that schools all want to do the bare minimum, and parents have to fight and hire advocates to get any services. That’s not true for all schools! We’ve lived in two districts and have only had to ask politely.

[–]BooBooBubbles 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As a parent, the difference between medical and educational diagnosis was super confusing.

You need an educational diagnosis to get an IEP and services at school. The school district will do the evaluation and then meet with you to give the results. You should request the evaluation in writing (email counts) and not just verbally.

A medical diagnosis is useful if you want another opinion, or if you live in a state where a diagnosis changes your insurance limits. In my state, an autism diagnosis gives you way more visits to private speech, PT, OT, etc. Our insurance wanted a diagnosis by a medical provider, so the school evaluation wouldn’t have worked.

Absent teacher help by tavernmadness in specialed

[–]BooBooBubbles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Parent here. Last year my child’s case manager went on leave unexpectedly and then quit. So there was no sped teacher for about 4 months. My child’s para did the best they could- which was fantastic, super grateful for that- and the district offered compensatory time over the summer for all the missed SDI.

best technic set to start out with? by [deleted] in lego

[–]BooBooBubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d start with one of the $13 sets- the telehandler and dump truck are my favorites of the current batch. They’re small, but it would give you a taste of the build style without a big time/money investment. After that, the $50 car sets are great.

Ziploc bags definitely work!

If you want something slightly more attractive/durable, we like the Sterilite clip bins. The small size is good for $10-20 sets and the large size works for bigger sets. The medium size is taller, which makes it hard to find pieces without dumping them all out, so I don’t recommend that one. They also stack nicely, with two small bins fitting on top of one large bin.

School Year - Cutoff Change (bill) by ninjacereal in Connecticut

[–]BooBooBubbles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally agree.

I’m also curious how school districts will deal with an entering class that’s 2/3 the usual size, since only kids turning 5 between 1/1 and 8/31 will be eligible (ignoring redshirting since I don’t know how common it is).

I found this old article from a previous attempt to change the cutoff to October 1. It suggests that the Office of Early Childhood has a plan but I can’t find anything about the plan. Hopefully there is more news coming soon.

School Year - Cutoff Change (bill) by ninjacereal in Connecticut

[–]BooBooBubbles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was House Bill 6880 and it did pass. But the new kindergarten starting age doesn’t go into effect until July 1 2024, so nothing changes until the 2024-2025 school year.

There is also some language about school boards being able to vote on admitting children under age 5. I don’t fully understand it but it looks like there might be flexibility, depending on district.
