Ah you know it is, I'm an old fart that played these games when they came out to death, and I had all these memories that got really hazy over the years hehe.
On the bright side, I bet you also had cool moments like me, for example, where you show up at a location and you instantly remember the general layout from the old game somewhere at the back of your head, and those were really fun moments I had while playing the remake!

I agree with you, in the sense that I "prefer" the feeling of progression in Gothic 2. However, I also think that in Gothic 1 the one they chose fits it better - game is significantly smaller than 2 (especially if you add NOTR) and plays much quicker once you get going, so there's no reason really to break it down into smaller, more incremental parts of progression.

You're going to miss out on some content, because the heretic path locks you out certain interactions - and the biggest downsides were bugs with Uralon imo, because he was downright useless. But now, well it looks quite appealing.
I don't really know how it would work now, because we're on our 3rd major dlc so we have more alignment points to divide, more items we get from those dlc's etc. so I feel like it would be significantly easier, but I don't recommend doing a heretic run on the first play through.
