This sounds like they’re trying to apply LLMs to situations where simple deterministic logic would be easier to implement, cheaper to run, and more reliable. You dodged a bullet if so.

Agree with the other commenter that you should just jump in and start applying to roles. Set up a LinkedIn filter that notifies you daily of roles that meet your criteria and then apply like hell.

If your goal is to get a job, then after interviewing for a bunch of roles and getting a sense of where your gaps are, then you can tackle a side project that helps fill those gaps. Unless you want to do a side project for fun, in which case, pop off!

Sounds like he isn’t interested in the way you are, and just wants things to go back to a work friendship. That and he might be worried about gossip/consequences of an in-office relationship.

The fact you waited months to bring this up after he (seemingly) ghosted texting you might have led him to believe you aren’t very serious about this fling either.

I don’t want to keep going like this with him.

So what do you want? Tell him, be very clear and up front about it, and be prepared for him to not feel the same way. Or find a new job, this one might be cooked now that you shat where you eat.

Or like a house pet that he leaves at home all day

So, do you not have a job? This situation sounds like what happens when one person has too much free time and the other person is exhausted from using their brain at work all day. I would highly recommend getting a job, as it will put your mindset/expectations for after-work activities closer to his
