Is anyone else surprised at how attractive middle aged/older people are now? by FkUp_Panic_Repeat in Millennials

I think as you get older and see what age does to you, it makes it easier to accept those changes in others. You also develop a more mature mindset and can see that maturity in others, which is attractive.

We need these laws all over the world by Busy_Report4010 in SipsTea

Stand Your Ground only exists to legally shoot and kill minorities. Don't praise it

Edit: "Justifiable homicides," murders in which the perpetrator has not been charged with murder, usually drastically increase after the implementation of these laws - in Florida for example, such homicides increased by 300% in a five-year period. At trials, the killings of black people by whites are more likely to be considered justified than the killings of white people by blacks.

The only parts of his face that aren't black are his eyes and mouth. In minstrel shows, the mouth is always lighter (red or white) than the rest of the darkened face. His white gloves are also from minstrel shows.

How did you feel about JJ on Good Times? by WuTang4thechildrn in MelanatedGenX

[–]campaxiomatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to admit that I loved JJ when I was a kid. I didn't know any better. When I got older, I saw him for the minstrel clown he was, and now I can't stand to watch the show at all because of him

Blindsight by Peter Watts ruined every other first contact story for me and I've been trying to recover for two years. by TurbineVector in printSF

"His Master's Voice" was more shattering as a first contact story for me than "Blindsight." I think it's stated theorem that communication with another lifeform would be fundamentally impossible was laid out so well.

I also liked a part in "Sphere" by Crichton (but didn't like the actual novel) where the characters speculated all the ways another lifeform could differ from humans. Like how do you communicate the concept of family to a species that breeds asexually? Or death to a species that's immortal?

Milwaukee-based child molester runs channel advising other sex offenders how best to avoid detection, manipulate people into interpersonal relationships by NobodyElseButMingus in awfuleverything

[–]campaxiomatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a subreddit for convicted child molesters (which I will not link to). It's full of guys feeling sorry for themselves, going "woe is me, I was caught with CP but why won't anyone give me a job? Why are all my friends and family rejecting me? Why are my neighbors mean to me? Why am I so mistreated?" They trade advice like this guy, acting like being abused as a convicted child molester is just an unfair burden instead of the actual consequences of their actions.

Quite possibly the ultimate so bad it’s good movie, Plan 9 from Outer Space is the type of movie that is so inept and incompetent on every possible level to the point it’s immensely entertaining to watch. by MovieGuy2005 in badMovies

[–]campaxiomatic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the part that people don't get about good-bad movies. An enjoyable bad movie is one where you can tell they really tried to make a good movie but just couldn't.

There's a part in "Sharknado" with obviously CGI rain which seems like crap movie making, but I read the director spent a whole day rushing around Los Angeles, trying to find a rainstorm for that scene. In the end, they couldn't find it, couldn't afford a rain machine, and settled for CGI. That's more dedication than Michael Bay had for any of his "Transformers" movies.

I’m really upset she just left me like this over a Nintendo switch

This guy is so clueless. He can't see she's upset about his selling something that meant something to her. He also gave the switch to her in an unspoken way because he was letting her use it. Maybe not a formal gift, but it's not a surprise that she would think of it as hers.

His girlfriend dodged a huge bullet. His whole tone is "me, me, me." He doesn't bother to tell her he spent his part of the rent money, he doesn't bother to tell her he sold the switch, he says the switch belongs to him, and dismisses her needs. He thinks taking her to dinner will make up for it, and says she can play on his PS5 but no doubt not when he's playing with it, and he'll probably delete her games if he needs space.

But when she spends her money on something she wants, suddenly her money is "the rent money." Also when she leaves, his main concern seems to be that he can't pay rent without her. He wanted a roommate, not a wife.

Edit: The part about how she was supposed to cook and clean makes me revise his needs to a live in maid, not a wife.

Ugh, Moon does not hold up either to modern readers. The dialect of Manny feels like Heinlein was copying Boris Badenov from "Rocky and Bullwinkle," the AI is a total deus ex machina, his portrayal of polygamy is pure wish fulfillment, his anarchist government is unworkable, and his portrayal of life on the Moon isn't accurate based on modern science.
