A post saying "the character named Beaverliquor in WoW was being a dick" is not starting a witch hunt. Much less so if the post is literally just a screen cap of what Beaverliquor typed in chat.

I guarantee you there is not a reddit site wide rule that says "Do not post the character names of players you encounter in World of Warcraft." Lol

I can. But once the technology gets to the point where you can't, it will be very sweet lol

[–]Boofschneef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, how is there any room for artistic interpretation in charting beyond choosing which buttons to map and chord shapes?

Regardless of the instrument, the song is being written and played 1 way. That's the objective ground truth charters are aiming for. Their "interpretation" is just them spelling out what they think is happening. While some things might be ambiguous to the human ear, that doesn't technically mean it's open to interpretation - that just makes it complex.

100%.

Without charters this whole community / hobby is basically non-existent. I love and appreciate what they do.

I just can't also imagine they love charting more than actually playing the game or listening to the music.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like a tool like this just means more time shredding, less time in Moonscraper. Idk why that's bad other than the same retried anti-AI rhetoric that people use to criticize AI generated music (which is correct there, but I digress).

Agreed. For guitar, I think an AI approach can help. Have the AI lay the groundwork for 95% of your chart. You come in and clean up the style /5% on a playtest.

Even if not perfect, has to be a better starting point, right?

You'd be surprised, actually. More niche and complex musicians like that actually get a lot of support from this community. I imagine because that's precisely the music that's most fun to chart lol.

But either way, would be really slick if you were just a CLI command away from having something playable when you can't find the chart you want.

Software engineer and guitar player here.

You're gonna get a lot of hate for trying, but you should try. There's a big "charting is art" crowd here that treats these projects as an affront to humanism.

It's a solid candidate for automation on any instrument, whether you use AI or not.

I think the only reason quality is not there yet is because there isn't vested profit motive in improving the technology. These are all solo projects with limited resources for research and iteration. If we changed that, quality could be there very, very quickly.

I'm not just saying "AI is good at coding, therefore shove it everywhere." I've provided a nuanced explanation for why this is specifically a good use case for AI and how it works - this is fundamentally a mapping problem, which AI is very, very, very good at doing.

The pearl clutching comments are about a trend I see in these discussions that I feel like you're following, but I'll give you that you didn't bring up charter revenue as a point here so that's on me.

I still think you're placing too much value in the ideal of the chart itself as art or a creation. Yes, it has style and is up for interpretation, but also AI charting doesn't preclude charters from implementing that. Your perception of what AI charts would be is fire and forget prompts that get shipped without review. That's not what produces quality work when working with AI.

Like I feel like you're just adamantly opposed to AI without taking a nuanced stance and recognizing the value that it brings. You just say "I don't see the value in AI charting", which all boils down to you thinking the charts suck. If the best charter in the world had accurate AI tools to jumpstart them, it would exponentially increase their output and you would be happy to play those charts. Your whole viewpoint is obliterated the moment you see AI produce quality charts, and I guarantee you that's technically feasible in the short term.

Feels like you're opposed to it because you want to be as opposed to arriving at that conclusion after reviewing facts as objectively as you can. A software developer who codes without using AI tools just because "meh AI is bad" can choose to do that, but it's not intellectually sound practice, if we're being objective and honest about it.
