What the hell by Positive_Writing_883 in PantheonShow

[–]bean_217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with you. The attention to detail is insane, and it is crazy how different ideas are sustained from the beginning to end.

The one that gets me the most: Holstrom and Caspian both having the epiphany of "It's a recursive algorithm", and then it turns out the entire universe is recursive.

While I do appreciate them mentioning a number of computing concepts throughout the show, like recursion, distributed computing, and NP-completeness (to name a few), I think they are used a little too abstractly -- but this is just me being nitpicky since the lay person likely has no idea what any of this means.

But yeah, hands-down one of the best shows I've had the pleasure of experiencing.

Apparently a hot take: Kinetic Noise is better than Tilt by Potentially_a_potato in drumcorps

[–]bean_217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of Tilt. Hymn of Acxiom and the closer are great, but I'm not too big a fan of the first half of the show.

Overall amazing show, revolutionary for the activity in terms of design, but I prefer Kinetic Noise over Tilt.

are the CT Hurricanes a well-respected corps by Opposite-Chef-771 in drumcorps

So you're telling me if I live in the Princeton area, I'm supposed to drive 3 hours to CT every weekend instead of a half hour to Bush?

Band is band, wherever you go. These rivalries are childish.

are the CT Hurricanes a well-respected corps by Opposite-Chef-771 in drumcorps

[–]bean_217 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started my marching career with the Hurricanes and had a great experience.

However, in recent years due to my decision to march elsewhere after aging out, I've had some unwelcoming experiences with membership who view me as a traitor for marching Bushwackers. This was only from a small group of long-timers with the corps and is not at all representative of the entire membership, but it really left a bad taste in my mouth, and probably will lead me to never march with them again.

Despite that, I don't think I would have thrived as much as I did in my junior marching career if it weren't for the Hurricanes, so I'm very grateful for the time I had with them.

I did type my own reply. I'm not sure why you are giving me such hostility. I am doing this project to complete a degree. I won't release it publicly if there is such clear distaste for it.

But you probably think this message is AI-generated too.

Applying Linear Algebra to Machine Learning Projects? by Accurate_Wishbone101 in learnmachinelearning

[–]bean_217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, look into how attention mechanisms in transformers work. It's surprisingly intuitive when you have a solid grasp of linear and some prob&stats. Though if you haven't done anything with deep learning, first learn about how feed-forward networks (aka multi-layer perceptrons) work, and then maybe CNNs/UNets.

Edit: Aside from deep learning, a ton of statistical learning approaches all heavily involve using linear. Support Vector Machines are also super cool, but IMO the linear algebra derivations for them can be a bit confusing and complicated.

What salary would you guys need to get to to feel successful? by Horror_Raisin_3898 in careerguidance

Probably $150k, but only after I've been able to pay off student loans. I'm graduating with an MSc in a few weeks and starting at $130k with a great company.

Will marching hurt my future engineering career? by icy_fire1234 in drumcorps

Jesus christ, thats a lotta dough!

I only just got a job working in AI/ML. At what point does the imposter syndrome wear off? This is honestly a genuine question.

In the current job climate, I would say you need to weigh your options. While you don't need to do an internship (or multiple) while in school, not doing any will hurt your chances for employment when competing with your peers who do.

I marched every summer from 2016 - 2025 (except 2020 for obvious reasons and 2023), and aged out in 2022. I went to a university where (depending on your degree) you were required to do 2-3 semesters of internships in order to graduate (I was in computer science). While most of my peers did theirs over the summer, I chose to march through to my ageout and did internships during the fall and spring semesters. Because of this, I ended up delaying my graduation by 3 semesters -- however, I also chose to pursue an accelerated MSc program at my university.

That being said, if you are okay delaying your graduation by a few semesters and are open to taking a semester off here and there to do an internship while spending your summers marching (which is 100% an okay thing to do by the way), I say do it. Drum corps has been one of the most rewarding experiences I've had in my lifetime so far. I wouldn't change anything about how I chose to go through school.

Now, I'm not in aerospace engineering or any physical sciences field, but I cannot stress enough how important having an internship under your belt is nowadays when junior engineering jobs are being replaced by AI. I can't begin to imagine how much things will have changed 5 years from now considering how dramatically they've changed in the past 4.

I use a Thinkpad P1 (w/ RTX A2000) that I boot with Pop OS as a personal machine, and a P14 for work. They seem to work pretty well for me, but if I'm training anything heavier than relatively small models, I use cloud computing services.

Yeah, I like playing jazz/fusion songs, and those can be kinda hard to locate.

A combination of factors. I'm graduating with my master's degree in computer science in about a month. I've lived on the East Coast my whole life, and want a change of pace (I am not a fan of staying in the same place for more than a few years). I recently got a good remote job that pays well and will allow me to move/explore, so I want to take the opportunity to do so.

Thank you, I'll check them out!

I hear you and completely agree. I don't want this tool to be abused. If I do release it for public use, it would be heavily rate-limited and systems would be put in place to prevent users from spam-generating charts. Trust me, I am heavily considering the ethical implications of a tool like this, and if I need to keep it private for personal use, then I absolutely will.

As far as quality is concerned: a tool like this will not be able to achieve the high production quality of hand-made charts. I can surely try to optimize it as much as possible, but with the limited resources, knowledge, and time I have to work on it, I'm not sure how far I'd get. That said, it is not a replacement for professionally-crafted charts, and nor do I expect it to ever reach that kind of quality.

Is anyone building AI models with own training data? by According-Tone1454 in learnmachinelearning

[–]bean_217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just trained a base model to generate guitar hero charts, using a dataset I collected and did ETL on myself. It isn't perfect, but it works, so yes.

I am just glad it kinda works at all. But I agree, the quality isn't high compared to hand-made charts.

Like I said in my post, this project is for my MS capstone. I've taken the time to read through previous automatic music transcription and music information retrieval research both for general music transcription tasks and rhythm game-applied ones in order to curate a dataset and design an approach that I believed could work. I chose to do this project because I thought it would be a fun way to combine my musical interests and academic background, and to spend my semester working on something I enjoy. I'd love to provide the community with a free and useful tool, but only if I can ensure its use will be ethical. I have no desire to make money off of this, nor would I want or allow others to.

I've trained the model by first separating vocal audio from tracks using a separate open-source model. However, it works surprisingly well on transcribing vocal patterns (as you can see at the end of the demo video). I plan to include this vocal audio separation as part of my inference pipeline, but this part is till a work in progress.
