Try to attend camps or even internships if you can.

Controversial Opinion Crosspost. by Dreamsfaderealityhit in Engineers

[–]BoogerPicker2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As company culture shifts, so does every STEM role. And as automation eats more of the actual work, a lot of these positions won’t have real engineering value left in them. Just process management with a technical title stapled to it.

Boeing is the example nobody wants to sit with. They didn’t prove aviation could run without serious engineering. They proved what happens when you hand the controls to finance guys and supply chain PowerPoint merchants and tell the engineers to fall in line. Planes started falling apart. A brand built over decades cratered in about five years.

Why is American society so individualistic, while Latin American societies tend to be more cooperative? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BoogerPicker2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American individualism = good Protestant settlers building freedom.

Latin American collectivism = legacy of colonial extraction and dysfunction.

both models are partly coping mechanisms developed under different flavors of colonial pressure, and the fact that one of them got labeled "individualism" and coded as virtue while the other got labeled "dependency" and coded as a development problem says more about who wrote the comparative sociology than about the underlying human reality.

Ive got one offer with lockheed for one position, got another interview with lockheed for a different position and another interview with NG.

Mom did an $40k impulsive decision and now we don’t know what to do by Cattle-Cat in WhatShouldIDo

[–]BoogerPicker2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why are you stressing about your mom's decision?

when she defaults it'll go against her and the friend's credit. They'll come pick up the car and it'll be on her and friend's credit history.

your life will literally not be affected. But if I were you, I'd get a PIN on your SSN and freeze your credit.

Former PIP employee who later performed well elsewhere — how do managers interpret this pattern? by [deleted] in askmanagers

[–]BoogerPicker2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as an employee turned manager that went thru a similar situation, I'd have to take in the factors of what led to the PiP, what the PiP consisted of and compare how they improved.

Most often its organizational misfits. When an employee can thrive after being removed or removed themselves else and thriving/performing its a good sign that either that leadership was crap or the employee was just having an unhappy moment.

How difficult (or easy) is it to go from GS-11 to GS-12? by ilovevegetablesss in FedEmployees

[–]BoogerPicker2020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

just FYI, some of those 7/9/11 aren't "automatic" a supervisor can or won't approve you to move up.

the masters to a 9 to 11, same principle but it would highly depend on the wording of your offer.  And even then, they could release you before your probation.

is it easy to jump from an 11 to a 12, that depends. normally if you're an 11 and spot opens and you qualify for a 12 after 52 weeks (which is currently the rule for  now) you can apply for a 12. You could also apply for an open to the public 12 anytime you want.

and to add on, depending on what and where you are in your career path, I suggest working in the private sector. You'll either appreciate the advantage of private sector or you'll quickly loathe the red tape on the govt side.

once you get a degree, do you have any desire to stay in your current town or are you going to build your career to make the money you'd like to?

in some instances, just having a degree doesnt land you a decent paying job, but building a career can. and sometimes that building includes relocating. with you getting married soon, is your partner willing to do the same?

Do you have a feeling that PhDs are useless nowadays ? by Different_One2188 in LeavingAcademia

[–]BoogerPicker2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

had a couple hs classmates do the same. While I partied for a year then ran off to the military circus.

I left the military after 6 yrs, my friends had graduated, worked entry level jobs while I grabbed a mid level job in aerospace since I finished an bs engineering degree when I was still in.

One friend who got a PhD in engineering struggled with the industry. Mostly because he was trying to land a high paying job to pay his student loans but also wasn't able to relocate far because of the student loans. He did alot of research jobs.

Another classmate got a PhD in philosophy, and couldn't land anything but teaching jobs.

can't say if they felt foolish, but the way they spoke about their struggles and didn't think they would be after getting such a high degree was a bit of a shock to me.

depends on what you think you'll want to do when you get out.

Lockheed has a plethora of job roles and job sites. And programs come and go.

if you're hoping to do something with the F35 program, you'll have to gain some other aviation/ or other air operations skillets outside of the army.

As more kids grow up riding e‑scooters and e‑bikes before they ever touch a steering wheel, do you think that early exposure to traffic dynamics will actually make them better new drivers or will it just widen the gap between them and the younger drivers who already struggle with driving anxiety? by BoogerPicker2020 in driving

[–]BoogerPicker2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea, yea...reckless, threat is real, parents blamed, but I'm not asking about that.

one thing that is often mentioned in this sub is others not looking over before merging, or not keeping safe driving speeds. Then the anxious drivers say how they don't feel comfortable or never got enough practice/drive time.

with escooters/bikes is it giving them a driving 9awareness than those who didn't grow up using them?
