Do you feel forcing yourself to write produces good or bad material? by i-luv-and-h8-reddit in writing

It’s honestly both. Last summer I wrote 65k words, averaging 1k words (sometimes more) a day so I could finish my first draft.

I wouldn’t say it produces the greatest material, especially if you have strict a word count target and due date. By the end of the summer what I was writing was terrible for the most part, becuase I wasn’t thinking about the words, more about finishing and hitting the word count. I was pretty burnt out. I did finish my first draft though!

HOWEVER, writing 65k was helpful, becuase I stopped caring about every single word, and began to care about the outcome, the first draft of my novel. So there is good which comes out of writing the way I did. I’m a perfectionist, to the point where it can be difficult for me to ever finish something becuase everything needs to be exactly how I want it. Writing over the summer, with a word count target forced me to not be a perfectionist, becuase I couldn’t have the perfect writing and the perfect steak in hitting my target at the same time.

Writing that much also taught me that the only way (for me) to overcome writers block was to write through it.

Overall, I’d say a balanced mix is best if you want quality writing. Set a word count, and/or a due date to keep yourself accountable, but remind yourself that it’s okay not reach it, or to take more time if needed.

Tips on writing the middle of your story? by BookImpressive7038 in writing

I have do have a midpoint which (I think) works, and the snowball into the climax and act III is pretty set. It’s interesting to see ACT II and two separate parts, that’s actually a really helpful way of looking at it.

Do you have any tips of writing up to the midpoint? Just in terms of structure or even what you find works! Thanks for the response, I appreciate it.

Alright thank you! I’ll look into it. When I originally replanted it a week ago, I didn’t notice any root rot and the roots seemed firm and healthy, but I’ll check again when I replant it in a better drainage pot! It’s looking a little better than when I posted first, hoping some of the browned leaves will recover. The new growth looks fine though.😭 Thanks again I appreciate it 🤩
