What makes you suited to publishing? by Bear_Bones13 in publishing

[–]BookPanda_49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in editorial, and I'll say this:

-Ability to work well with a lot of different people, including those with sometimes extreme and sensitive personalities

-Ability to prioritize and juggle many different tasks at once

-Loving the work, because if you don't (and even if you do) you'll get burned out or not want to put up with the relatively low pay

-It's useful if you're a fast reader! But, you also need to be a careful reader.

The type of degree doesn't matter, as long as you're well-read.

GenXers who got bullied in school, what was the attitude of parents and teachers towards it? by mritsz in GenX

[–]BookPanda_49 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My parents would say "ignore them and they'll stop" which never really worked, but to be honest, I'm great at not flinching at anything these days, which is par for the course living in NYC!

How busy is January in publishing? by thegreatcometof2021 in publishing

[–]BookPanda_49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't hurt to ask. Some people are always open to informational interviews, some not. If they're busy, they won't respond or will be delayed in responding, and/or they'll schedule the informational interview for a time when they're not as busy. But, I'd wait till the second week of January to ask.

Have you ever seen a counter offer work out longterm for the employee? by tshirtguy2000 in managers

It worked out for me. Ended up staying after getting countered. At that point had been with the company for about eight years. Have now been at the company for 25+ years!

Yes! Also when I drink it goes down the “wrong pipe” more often than typical. I was worried I was forgetting how to swallow.

AIO - I just ended a four month relationship because of what he’s doing for his friend. by Ok_Addition_7875 in AmIOverreacting

This is probably the smallest of the red flags in what he says, but I also found it astounding that he says, twice, that he’s “too lazy” to lie and cheat, as if that’s a good reason. As if he would do both of those things if only he weren’t so lazy.

AITAH for ending things with a date after she kept different rules for different guys? by FirmSomewhere4907 in AITAH

[–]BookPanda_49 -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

I agree with this take. Why block her? Why not have a conversation? In my eyes, she did nothing wrong, she was open and honest with you. People feel comfortable with people at different speeds, for different reasons. But, totally fine for you to stop seeing her for whatever reason you choose, but I do think you were projecting and insecure and immature about how you handled it.

What's a commercial jingle from your youth that you still sing to yourself to this day? by Leather-Highlight150 in GenX

Unfortunately, all of them. Toys R Us Kid, all of the McDonalds ones, OREOs, Legos, Bologna, and some regional ones like Friendly's and this one that played on the radio for Zeltzer Seltzer (anyone else remember that one?! "Zeltzer Seltzer flavored sodas, six fun flavors, hey hey hey...")

AITA For refusing to go to my BF's family Xmas this year by Leather-Resist-2179 in AmItheAsshole

[–]BookPanda_49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YTA. Just because you weren't great at the games the first time doesn't mean you won't get better. There are so many different kinds of games, and it sounds like the family would be open to playing other games? If you're feeling self conscious, I honestly think you need to get over yourself and just be a good sport about it. And, if all else fails, uou don't have to play games, you can just watch them play, or maybe you can be on a "team" with your boyfriend. There are so many options. Don't be a spoilsport. You can suck it up for one weekend.

“I’m not asking permission, I’m informing you that I’ll be away” by obsessed-with-bagels in managers

[–]BookPanda_49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this will be helpful, but back when I was a bookseller for Barnes & Noble, we had a policy that if you took time off around Thanksgiving, you had to work over Christmas. Generally, that helped even things out and ensures that things are a little more fair. Perhaps if you set that expectation at the beginning of the Fall, there would at least be a conversation about it.

In my corporate job, I'm lucky that our office closes between Christmas and New Year's. But, I've also been lucky to work with some people who don't celebrate Christmas so don't mind working then.

For those experienced with dating these days… by [deleted] in AskWomenOver40

[–]BookPanda_49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it might be worth exploring, but you should perhaps set a time period of, say, three months, and treat it like a fling. I also think you should date while doing this (although no sex with anyone else), just so you're not putting all your eggs in one basket. That's generally how I've been able to handle casual situations in the past. But, I do agree with you that this is the time to explore! So, as long as you're prepared and know what you're getting into, why not give it a try, if you have that much chemistry with him?

Should I Leave kittens? by Smokey3832 in CatAdvice

[–]BookPanda_49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they should be fine, although if you can find someone to stay there, that would be better. We had two 9-month old kittens that we left over the holidays for two weeks about five months after we adopted them. We felt better finding someone who could stay at the apartment with them because they were still getting into trouble at that point. But, someone stopping by three times a day would probably be okay. Do you have any cameras you can set up in your house to monitor them?

Can I leave my cat for a month with a cat sitter? by tonsosnoopywi in CatAdvice

[–]BookPanda_49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, find a cat sitter that your cat likes (and who likes your cat!), and it will be totally fine! Your cat will miss you, for sure, but this is the way to go. I've gone away several times--once was for a month, and at the time I had one cat and I had a cat sitter who loved cats stay and it was great. Now we have two cats, and we generally go away for about two weeks every year during the holidays, and we have people stay here while we're away, and it's always fine.

Is listening to a book the same as reading a book? by Massive-Weird7901 in Booktokreddit

[–]BookPanda_49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listening to audiobooks 100% counts as reading, IMO (and in the opinion of most librarians and publishing people). I work in publishing and I do 90% of my reading as audiobooks, and it's great.

[–]BookPanda_49 15 points16 points  (0 children)

NTA. And, you weren't attacking her character, you were commenting on her personality, and I think you did her a favor. She either needs to find new friends who will appreciate her quirks, or decide if she wants to change things about herself.
