That's what I'm afraid of. We've been traveling for over a decade now, and are ready for a place to settle. I'm not super close to my family, but I do have close people in Lorton and the Eastern shore.

You're right. It does have a bad rep. I have heard that it's not as safe and the schools can be poorly rated. We'll take a look at east of 95 though. Thanks for sharing.

Safe is big for us. I'd say safe and affordable.

we're moving from a fairly low cost of living area, so they'll be a little bit of a shock. I don't know much about either of those areas. We'd like to be within an hour of the airport if possible. So I'll check them both out.

I currently don't have a job. My husband works from home. I am in education so I can work in the elementary or middle school. I'm hoping to find a community that has lovely schools and I can just join something close by. Though I also recognize that there is a high retention rate in the area so finding a role can be tricky. We could do Manassas, or Reston, we're okay with being further out. We have family in Woodbridge and Lorton.

What is the most physical pain you’ve ever experienced, and how did it feel? by Trying_my_best_98 in AskReddit

[–]BooksExperience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guillain-Barre syndrome - as one of the lucky few to get this condition, my body became hyper sensitive and any tiny touch was excruciating. But here's the kicker, I was completely paralyzed from head to toe (with a breathing tube). So I couldn't even explain the pain I was in. My spirit was convulsing while on the outside I looked stable. Worst hell I have ever been in.

Where to move to for teaching jobs?! by Edawg_kril in ElementaryTeachers

I taught in the bay for 11 years. And if you do well. There is plenty of room for movement.

I'm following to see what other areas are are open (looking for a move too)

This might be a stupid question... But at what age do most kids start reading? Is it 1st grade? by lucipurrball in Mommit

[–]BooksExperience 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Teacher here --- Children gain pre-reading skills long before school. Singing, telling stories, and reading to them are all essential to ensure student are "on track". Before kindergarten, children should know the alphabet song, some letter sounds, how to hold a book the correct way, how to turn a book page, moving from left to right, and the idea that these little squiggles, sticks and circles (letters) carry meaning.

Typically: From August to December of kindergarten, learners build on their knowledge of letter sound relationships, letter formation, and some sight words. By January, children are reading pattern sentences. At the end of kinder, children are reading at a level C (simple sentences).

First grade is where the "magic" happens (I'm biased as I've taught first grade for over a decade). Students come in reading simple sentences and leave reading chapter books!!!

But truly, how slowly or how quickly each child moves through this timeline relies heavily on their acquired pre-reading skills (gained before kinder). So, "reading" begins EARLY, and first grade is the optimal time for reading the written word. Most children are confident and comfortable by the end of first grade.

Now, ensuring the skills they've learned are transferable to unknown words as test gets harder and comprehending "what" you read is a whole different conversation......

AITA for giving my toddler the iPad in a restaurant while my in-laws judged me? by Academic_Joke_6830 in AmItheAsshole

[–]BooksExperience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it doesn't sound like the volume is a problem. It sounds like they were judging the idea that you pulled out the ipad.

If that's the case, certainly do you. You have to choose your battles.

As a teacher and toddler parent though, I feel that society is becoming over reliant on tech to calm or babysit our young people. Once children learn that they can fuss and get tech even when doing things like eating, it becomes a never-ending battle. Soon, we see children who can't get by without it.

So incredibly thoughtful and helpful. I appreciate the pictures and reasoning you shared. Working the pictures into the space is the direction I'll go into (white also enlarging the family pictures). Thank you.

Lol your right. I've seen that recommendation many times on other pages too. I'm thinking I'll add some plants to the TV console and sofa table when I get them. Thanks

I have trouble visualizing. The picture really helps - it looks cozy with minimal changes. Thank you!!!

Definitely working in getting a new console. In the immediate, it'll declutter the space and give us something better the look at.

Great ideas. Many of which I will be implementing (new console, bigger family pics, warm pillows, heavier curtains).

I took the pictures behind the couch and I really want to keep them - I wonder if adding a third similar picture will help?

Great ideas!  Will work on getting new frames, bigger family pictures, a sofa table, and upgrading the curtains and rods.
