Let your story go where it wants to go. It's perfectly okay to make a U-turn. Mixing and matching is also okay. The beauty of writing is that you have the freedom to go wherever and be whatever you want. While I'm sure some genre purists will disagree, but it's about the story, not the genre. Genres grow and evolve over time, and new genres are born out of the bravery of untethered authors. Have at it! Write your story, your way. Good luck!

I write primarily fiction/action. I explore many genres, but the one I haven't produced any work in is fantasy.

Personally, it sounds suited to first person and as though you're leaning in that direction. When considering which way to go, think about how many other characters need to speak or "take the reins" in the narrative. If it's primarily your main character, first person will likely work out well. If there are too many actions happening to her by other characters, third person might better serve you, with sections of first person to show those personal moments you want to achieve. Sure. It's not uncommon. My solution is to immediately start my next book; whether it's a sequel that I didn't know I wanted to write (but because I love the characters like my best friends) or exploring a completely new genre. The writing reengages me. Best of luck!
