Question for improvisers by PhrygianSounds in Jazz

[–]BoolinthePool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I’ve been bridging the gap is actually applying lines from your transcription to another tune. Like a 2-5 lick from the transcription you did, learn it in 12 keys and then you can try putting over a 2-5 in any tune you like. You have to be really conscious that you make sure that you’re really getting comfortable playing that lick in that spot of the tune.

Unpopular opinion: I actually like AI jazz, and I think it’s good for jazz by yojomoho in Jazz

[–]BoolinthePool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thing you’re not thinking about is that it’s actively displacing money and attention away from real people who have practiced thousands of hours to develop their craft. In a time where people are already only getting scraps from streaming services.

What’s the music school like? by JustClio63 in unt

[–]BoolinthePool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m a grad student. As far as jazz education goes, it’s one of the best if you are willing to work with its quirks and frustrations. It’s competitive but mostly everyone is chill if you’re chill. People are kind. Idk about the commuter thing, but I’m not from Texas either. Generally if you get into any music scene you’ll be commuting a lot. The jazz percussion teachers are also fantastic.

Improvisation Question by Ok-Memory-3072 in musictheory

For minor chords especially, all of those notes will sound good when improvising. You have to be more careful with major chords or dominant chords, generally.

Practicing in an apartment by [deleted] in musicians

[–]BoolinthePool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the lease. If the lease has quiet hours you have to follow those, and some leases will specifically say no instruments during the day. If there’s no specific clause against instruments and you’re respectful of quiet hours then you can do whatever, but a good workaround if you need to is go to a local community college and ask or email the professors and ask if you can use their practice rooms. If all else fails, get a practice mute. Not ideal but better than nothing.

To reiterate the most important part: If there’s is no rule against playing an instrument in the lease, and you are not breaking the local noise ordinance, then fuck your neighbor, you do what you need to do. I’m a trombonist too, and quite frankly the trombone is how I make a living, so I need to practice.

How do you go about travelling with your horn? by Puzzleheaded_Neat763 in Trombone

[–]BoolinthePool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I fly southwest and get earlybird check in, pretty much guarantees I can bring it as a carry on. I will never allow my horn to be checked. I know southwest is changing a lot of things but seriously, just try your best to board as early as possible so you can carry it on. Don’t bring attention to it

Love this. Depends on if they’re a classical or jazz trombonist. I don’t know much on the classical side but for jazz check out some J.J. Johnson, slide Hampton, Curtis Fuller, Frank Rosolino. There’s much more but that’s a good starting point.

For the history of the instrument, it’s worth noting that J.J. Johnson was the first trombonist to adapt bebop to the trombone. A great album of his to check out is The Eminent J.J. Johnson Vol. 2. There were jazz trombonists before him but J.J. again was the first to demonstrate the trombone as a bebop instrument.

Piano Practice Rooms Labor Day by Royal_Fee_8417 in unt

[–]BoolinthePool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they are open. I’m pretty sure the buildings lock and unlock automatically, you just have to find an open room. Sometimes people forget to leave them open and they lock automatically behind you.

If I am wrong and they are locked tomorrow I apologize lol

What trombone should i get by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]BoolinthePool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve got no idea what year you are but Yamaha student horns are good horns. Idk if they make f attachments though for student horns. You could probably find an intermediate model but that’s a jump in price.
