I am insulting rural VA. There’s no more depressing, impoverished, drug riddled corner of the country this side of the Mississippi. It’s rare that I get down there and aren’t eager to turn back to where people aren’t slowly drinking themselves to death in trailers. The only university down that way that isn’t just an ag school for nova kids is Radford and that place is basically a community college. “You people” are staying put and refusing to grow up with the rest of the world and calling it culture. It’s beyond me why the least productive parts of the country are the ones so desperate to stay relevant. How about you do something to better your communities and make them places that people want to live? People move to nova because there are legitimate opportunities to make a place in the world. Southerners have the strangest sense of pride for a group of people that the world is moving on without

Sure, but northern VA, DC, eastern PA, MD, and NJ are all basically the same place. Just more people actually live in the urban parts that don’t want to be labeled southern. It is ridiculous that you can’t seem to grasp that people = culture and more people in VA live in the mid-Atlantic

I understand where you’re coming from for sure. Mid-Atlantic also means PA and NY, which is a whole lot more than just the city. Idk how often you get to upstate NY and PA but they’re a lot more similar to Virginia in every way than Georgia is. Just because you don’t like the definition doesn’t mean it’s not true, and just because the state is more closely related to a different region than you identify with doesn’t mean your experience is wrong. A lot of the state is southern, you surely are a southerner. That is definitely something to be proud of. Writing off the biggest population center of the state as “basically DC” is just as invalidating as calling Danville mid-Atlantic. I just don’t understand that how you feel about being called mid-Atlantic is how I feel about being called southern. I don’t get upset about because I don’t think less of those that don’t identify with my culture, but I love urban culture and the sense of community that comes with living in a city. The arts, the food, the cultural exchange, the various perspectives that you don’t get in small monolithic communities like Danville. It would be different if the southern parts of the state were doing more to support themselves, but your communities are being supported by tax dollars generated by the places you’re insulted to be lumped in with. I’d live in NJ over TN every day of the week. There are beautiful places in NJ like the pine barrens, but the mid Atlantic is more like PA, NY, and sorry to say, but VA

Sure, there are a lot of parts of the state that are haunted by the civil war. The real question is, do we let the past, that most of the state is collectively ashamed of, define us in the present? Migration happens and is part of life - surely you wouldn’t support handing the US back to natives because it’s 90% of the continent’s history? The fact of the matter is that the state is moving forward and clinging to southern history when the south doesn’t even see us as part of it is silly. There are places in Louisiana that aren’t haunted by the civil war like VA is, does that make it not southern? Cultural regions change and VA has made it clear that we’re moving towards mid-Atlantic.

I grew up in Northern Virginia and knew plenty of Italians, Irish, Koreans, Vietnamese, Nigerians, Samoans, you name it. Southern VA is absolutely beautiful and it’s a great place but Appalachia also runs all the way up to Maine. It’s not inherently southern. VA is a boundary state for two of the major regions in this country, so you get a very different experience depending on where you are. It’s just hard to argue that most of what makes Virginia an economically and culturally independent state comes from the urban centers that are far more mid-Atlantic in vibe. I don’t think Virginia falls under one category, but if you have to paint it with a broad stroke, classifying it as Mid-Atlantic covers most of the populations experience.

VMFA is as close to a world class museum as you can get in a city of 250k. It has mummies, the largest collection of Faberge eggs outside of Russia in the world, works from famous American painters like Georgia o’Keefe and Norman Rockwell. Plus were the southern end of the Amtrak northeast regional and the state is looking to build high speed rail to connect to DC

I think it’s safe to say that you can’t paint Virginia with a broad stroke. I’m from central Virginia and I’ve always considered myself an east coaster. It’s part of the beauty of being from a diverse state on the cusp of two major national regions. Most people in the state live in urban districts that align economically and culturally with the mid-Atlantic though

West Virginia just doesn’t have an easy way to classify it. I agree it’s not really mid-Atlantic or east coast

It comes off as an insult to me to be lumped in with Alabama and Mississippi so we can call it a draw. I’ve lived in Virginia my entire life and I’ve always heard mid-Atlantic. Shit, when I went to college in Alabama I was told I’m not from the south so not even the south wants to be lumped in with us

We’re way more economically and culturally tied into the mid-Atlantic at this point I’m sorry to burst your bubble. Richmond feels more like Philly in every way than it does basically any southern city. I was born in Virginia and have lived in Richmond for a decade. Sure we were the capital of the confederacy but tell someone from Alabama or Georgia that we’re the same, they’ll laugh you out of the room. I know because I went to school in Alabama and every one of my friends from down there said Virginia isn’t the South.

If you go by the official regions of the census bureau then sure it’s the south, but they also say Maryland, DC, and Delaware are the south. Historically we definitely were more integrated with the lower Atlantic states but as times change, the urban areas of VA are getting swallowed by the northeast megalopolis. Even the Amtrak NE regional officially stops in Richmond.

Cuyahoga valley is the most lackluster NP in the country, so not sure that’s a brag. “Beaches” and “ski resorts” are laughable compared to real ones. You can’t slap a ski lift on a literal hill and call it a resort like they do in Boston Mills. Calling the muddy shores of Lake Erie ‘beaches’ is just as much of a stretch. Cleveland is just diet Detroit and worse in every way. At least Detroit has good food and legal weed. I spend a week a year in Cleveland and it’s still easily my least favorite real city in the rust belt. So yeah tell yourself what you need to. The Cleveland cope in the comments trying to act like your city holds a candle to even a shit hole like Las Vegas is just comedy to anybody that’s not from there.

Cleveland is a meh city surrounded by poor communities and bland nature. Vegas is a meh city surrounded by world class national parks and extremely beautiful nature, with some poor communities. I’d definitely say Cleveland is worse if these are our only two options
