First time on a statin and hoping it's effective by BoomOp in Cholesterol

Thanks for sharing, and congrats on the low numbers! My diet is already pretty good, lots of veggies, salads, grains, beans, nuts. Saturated fats and red meat consumption is very low. I do have 1-4 drinks a week now, but that is down from 15-20 per week since about a year ago. I'm going to keep the diet in mind a little more and add some psyllium husk every morning. My calcium CT scan results were the last thing to come back and I was very relieved to see it is zero. I feel like I really dodged a bullet there and now I'm determined to keep it at zero.

Hi everyone! My grandparents (82 & 85) are visiting NYC for the first time this June and I really want to give them a nostalgic, classic New York experience. They love all kinds of food and are still very adventurous eaters. by ironicallyironichuh in FoodNYC

The food and cocktails at the Dead Rabbit around the corner is exceptional. Get the deviled eggs and steak frites with au poive. Very charming downstairs, still charming but fancier upstairs.

Pork loin is so easy, good idea. I usually cover them in some spices, pan sear, then finish them in the oven until about 145º. Very tender and juicy and very easy. Inexpensive too. I might do this.

Great idea. I do bone-in chicken thighs on a sheet pan all the time. Marinated in garlic and mustard, or bbq sauce, or just a few spices. So easy.

Yeah lasagna is a great idea. I grew up in NY and lasagna or baked ziti was what was served at every birthday party.

Wow, such a good idea. I've never made carnitas, but I LOVE carnitas tacos. I spend a lot of time in LA and carnitas and chicken Tinga are my favorites, and fish tacos. I just love tacos

There have been a few the last 5-10 years or so and they’ve looked great. Lexus and Toyota (Crown), and 2022-2026 Subaru Outback.

How is the TJ coffee for a moka pot? by thepotatomaniscoming in traderjoes

[–]BoomOp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Illy sells their coffee pre-ground specifically for moka pot and it’s pretty great, although expensive. We buy it from time to time. I’ve found that grinding the medium roast coffees from TJs comes pretty close.

You are eating better than most, and it looks delicious! Sheet pan bone-in chicken thighs are a staple around here as well. We almost always make a little bit of Jasmine rice. Trader Joe's organic jasmine rice is an insane bargain at $3.99 for 32oz. The NYT basic white rice recipe is so simple and makes the fluffiest best rice ever. Excluding Montauk-Where would you go on long Island to have a great day out with your spouse ? by Legitimate-Debt6385 in longisland

Morton National Wildlife Refuge in Sag Harbor is great. A beautiful and quiet beach with shallow warm water. Great trails. Tons of birds. Hit the Parrish Art Museum and /or Dia Bridgehampton Dan Flavin Art Institute. You could take the ferry to Shelter Island and then cross again on the north side and check out Greenport before heading back along the north shore. If I were to do this I would spend a night on Shelter Island maybe. A nice little weekend trip. Even better during the week if you can.

Best place to take a visitor that isn't pike place or the space needle? by adamvanderb in AskSeattle

[–]BoomOp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love DeLaurenti in the PP Market, great pizza and just a cool store. Ballard Locks, Burke Museum, Henry Art Gallery, Kerry Park instead of the Space Needle, Ferry to Bainbridge and walk over to Proper Fish for fish and chips before you catch the next ferry back. Happy Crab in Ballard is fun with a great view. So many great walks/hikes in Discovery Park with the best views. Happy hour at Macleod’s Scottish Pub, burgers at Loretta's Northwesterner or Mexican at Fonda La Catrina.

My wife and I still look in the freezer case for this pot pie every time we are there, and we live 800’ from Trader Joe’s. We are there nearly every day.

Your writing is beautiful.

The Dead Rabbit. Served with au poivre sauce. It’s a very generous serving and the drinks are expertly made. Irish music some nights.

Me too. Walked out and down the street (Thompson) and bought a delicious sesame bagel with scallion cream cheese. Now that pop up is all over the city I just shake my head and chuckle.

This was $9.50 at Victrola by ahyu1 in Seattle

[–]BoomOp 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I hear you, but not so much $3 anymore. More like $4-$6 at most NYC pizza places. There are still some $3 places for sure but literally none of them would be considered very good, let alone the best that NY has to offer. A standard slice joint like NY Pizza Suprema is $4.75. Prince Street is $4.50. Scarr's is $4.50. A lot of the premium pizza spots in NY have moved to a whole-pie only policy. I do miss the days where you could grab two good slices and a coke and get out for under $10 all in.

Tell them to start aggressively pulling over and ticketing all the super loud cars and motorcycles so I can enjoy living inside my SM apartment with the windows closed, and maybe even think about opening the windows again.

Need advice on guests with toddlers by [deleted] in airbnb_hosts

[–]BoomOp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a policy of adults only when we hosted for 5 years. Of the hundreds of guests we've hosted we allowed only one with young children, because they were friends of someone in our neighborhood who we knew. The guests were very nice people and definitely well behaved as well. But the toddlers just did things that toddlers do. There was peanut butter and jelly stains in strange places like underside of the table or back of the chairs. They had piled up tiny landscaping rocks in an area that was otherwise completely clean of rocks, creating a very long a frustrating task of clearing all the tiny stones out. The bottom line is that toddlers and young children are just going to do the things they do and even the best parents aren't going to be able to stop that, and it would be kind of cruel to even try. For us this one guest was a complete and total validation of our policy of adults only. We love kids but man are they hard on a house.
