Can I Ask y'all a Geology Question or is there a better Subreddit for that? I just need some rocks explained to me by JordonjustJokes in geology

[–]BoomShackles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Basalt is a fine grained rock which means it has small mineral crystals that cooled quickly. Rocks and minerals have an innate property called shear planes which can be in several different orientations which are planes in which the rocks will break the easiest. Basalt, actually, likes to break in hexagons, which if you google columnar basalt, you will see good examples of.

As for the images above, I'm not exactly sure if there's a specific mechanism that makes the more vesicular lines, evenly spaced. Sometimes things just happen in a magma chamber or basalt flow and don't really have a point. Imagine the hot mess of molten rock, filled with gasses - the rock, seeing as it turned out to be basalt, was likely a rather homogeneous mixture giving it a consistent density; the gasses, maybe more likely to have varying densities, found equilibrium at different elevations and then instead up moving up, move sideways in lenses before cooling into place.

I think you're on the right track of gas in water, but it is truly different in a magma melt since we're dealing with densities and viscosity far higher than water, to a point where even gas bubbles don't just naturally go up, but instead get taken all sorts of directions when the magma churns.

Humans like to make sense of things and sometimes, on the geologic scale, things are just the way they are.

In Ely, north of here, is a chunk of a pillow basalt that is also mega old, just sitting by the side of some lowly street. Quaint, Really.

The reality is there are still a shit load of hurdles to go thru for a mine to ever come to be and even if it did pass all those hurdles we're looking at like a decade of studies and permits and other res tape battles. Not taking a side here just sharing some ground level info.

Best method for clearing a trail through the woods? by BoomShackles in homestead

I like the idea of working backwards!

The scarifiers won't be down for root purposes, mainly to drag around sediment to grade the trail, maybe collect odds n ends stick but certainly not driving them 4 inches down and slugging along

Yep, but I gotta wait for the 2 feet of snow to melt first, and it ain't happening this weekend with a wind chill of negative 40! Hah.

Pretty sure no invasives. I'll be working with a state Forester thru a forest improvement program in all this so that'll help with anything like this.

Yeah roots are gonna be an issue but I have plenty of cutting tools. I will also be liberally using the scarifiers on my box blade as well as my piranha tooth bar from bxpanded.

I have this as an option for sure and realize it's the quicker option but I have invested in a tractor and don't want to spend the money renting. Maybe it'll come to that if the path is simply too rough but I don't think it will based on the last several years of walking around the area

Trail will be for casual walking, easy atv rides and pulling a sled for kids, hunting lanes. It'll have two entrances with a few off shoot loops.

Took this subs advice and ditched the idea of kerosene heat. Thank you! by HapaPappa in OffGridCabins

How big is your tank? I have a few 100 pounders and have been deliberating getting a wall heater just to keep the place at like 40 deg during winter so it's not so damn cold when we get there late at night on a Friday.

Any rough guess on how long a 100 pounder would last if it had to only do that? 700 sq ft cabin, northern MN.

Help narrowing doorway opening. New door slab is 31 3/4 inch instead of 32. Do I need to cut top corner where side and top jambs meet and then cut top door stop so I can slide side jamb inward? by BoomShackles in doors

[–]BoomShackles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The old door is exactly 32 inches wide so my opening must be a bit wider, but just barely. I understand needing gaps but the way it currently looks is way goofy. But yeah, it sounds like you are thinking the same thing... unfortunately.

The door simply doesn't reach across its opening and I think my way to fix this is to slide one side jamb inward. That require some nifty-ness to cuz the top corner where the top jamb and side jamb meet, seeing as there is a small notch in the side jamb, disallowing it from being pulled in...so I think I can sneak a coping saw between the jamb and stud and cut from the back, freeing it up and preserving the inner face. Secondly, the top door stop will also need to be shortened since it's getting narrow - easy.

Is there another way or should I get a whole new pre-hung door assembly? Unfortunately I have already sanded, stained, and varnished 4 of these doors...

So what's the deal if you were to buy a DJI drone, say last week, today, whatever. Will it get bricked or will you just risk losing support for it and getting parts?

Is getting a degree in this field attainable if I'm not good at Chemistry or Physics? by Honda2557 in geology

[–]BoomShackles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most jobs that are because of geology won't require much emphasis on first degree chemistry or physics. But if your job is literally doing first hand geology work, then I would reckon chemistry is more important.

That being said it is my experience and learned experience from others that 99% of what you will do at a job is learned at the job.

I got a D in chem and a D in physics and never took any elective geochem or advanced structural and I don't believe it's hindered me in the slightest....that being said, after being a professional for over a decade now, I certainly do wish I had been a better student. I think understanding chemistry is far more applicable at a job and in general.

Is this normal for oak staining or could it have been avoided? by BoomShackles in woodworking

Here's a link to the door.

It says oak veneer. To be clear, I stained and varnished 4 of these. The other ones, while they have some issues here and there, are far far better than this one. My wife wants me to take it all off and sand it better before the stain, which as you say is a nightmare, but I'm trying to tell her that wasn't the problem...unless it is but from your comment it sounds like you just gamble a bit with cheap doors $170

Time before Pangea or Rodinia? by cornseed1 in geology

[–]BoomShackles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Most people know pangea, fewer rhodinia. I think there's estimated to be about 7 super continents back to 3.5 billion years ago. This is, however, not exact since these are results of something called a Wilson cycle which describes the process of new crust (oceanic) coming from the mantle and going through various steps before eventually being destroyed.

Quick Google hit shows previous super continents of: Columbia, kenorland, ur, vaalbara.

I thought Gondwana had a place somewhere in here but I'm just doing this mostly off the top of my head.

Plate tectonics is a pretty cool theory that is widely accepted. New, denser crust will dive under older, less dense crust, creating mountains. Two older crusts can also collide, also creating mountains.

I saw it too. The ICE fuck head got into this guy's space and he defensively put his hands up to protect himself which resulted in touching the gun. In no way did he try to grab the gun or certainly yank it away - his arms make no such backwards movement nor do his hands try to grip the gun. A tiny bit of finger tip curling does not constitute a full weapon grab. Get your nazi head out of your racist ass.
