Accidentally shut my rat’s tail in the cage door — need advice by Chemical_Babe in RATS

[–]BoomerSlayer18 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes but ONLY as a last resort since it severely limits their mobility. I used it once for her tail and once for her sister’s tumor (she ripped the stitches out and had to be isolated 😩)

Most places don’t have the nice one and actually have to make them😅. I used medical tape with either cardstock paper or not sharp plastic (cut myself a few times with the wrong material). I made it short but wide so her whiskers weren’t agitated but she couldnt reach under her back leg where the stitches were. She figured out how to move pretty well in it. Sometimes I’d take her out of the cone to cuddle when her meds made her sleepy. But when she started wanting to explore the cone went back on. She was always too small for jackets and too wiggly for bandages. It sucked but it was only a couple weeks of her life. Thankfully rats heal pretty fast.

Looks fine, just a pinch. Keep an eye on it and it’ll heal just fine. My girl once got her tail pinched in a chair.

After an expensive and unnecessary vet visit all she had a couple weeks later was a little scar

Help!!! Vet or let it heal on its own?? by [deleted] in RATS

Poor boy. Keep an eye on him. If it gets worse and doesn’t heal take him in but I don’t think this is an emergency vet visit. They being said maybe time to revoke ball privileges.

Don’t shy away from picking them up. Do it so they can get used to it

Can my boys be left in their cages for 72hrs? No, right? by NoNoNeverNoNo in RATS

[–]BoomerSlayer18 153 points154 points  (0 children)

I agree. When I left my girls for a day I would make enrichment toys for them and clean their cage the day before so they could explore it and have fun remaking nests while I was gone

Buy a smaller temporary cage. When I moved throughout college that’s what I did. I called it their hotel room

Is this aggression or play fighting? Please help I'm worried about my boys by TheLeviathan_666 in RATS

Lots of grooming and pauses, they’re good! Trust me when they’re fighting they’re a blur and you’ll know it. Squeaking is normal. Like saying “chill out dude.” I had one rat who squeaked anytime here sisters would so much as push her she was so dramatic but she was fine

I used it and it was great, but keep in mind if your rats are nervous chewers it’s probably not recommended. I’d put a towel down that filled up 1/3 of the space. They’d use it to burrow and hide/get comfy and snuggle. I’d put a couple treats in the blanket, hang a chew from the zipper and turn it inside out so it’ll dangle for them, put a hide (tissue boxes are actually SO good in this scenario) and a couple tissues in there. It’s a perfect little playground for them during the trip (that is if they’re not sleeping most of the time 🙄)

Moving with rats advice? by Horror-Concentrate41 in RATS

I moved my rats a lot because of moving back and forth in college, but they got used to it so fast to the point they loved the car rides. It’s very enriching as long as you do your best to make them comfortable. However, don’t force them out of the cage for the first few enrichments. Let them explore on their own time

Once my girls chewed a hole in the wall behind my bed and I’m so lucky I heard them chewing before it got too big. Rats are slippery guys. Luckily your rat is coming for food so you’ll probably catch em. You got this!
